Possible 2nd round draft picks for the Texans.

The 2nd round is where teams are still finding starters and finding the most value amongst draft picks. Possible 2nd round picks:

1. Jon Asamoah-OG, the Texans need O-line help and this guy fits us perfectly. He's got size and talent and plays in a ZBS scheme already.

2. Mike Johnson-OG, another very good OG for a team that needs O-line help and the 2nd round is where most teams find their O-line starters. He seems a little stiff to me so he may fall to our spot in the 2nd.

3. Nate Allen-FS, this guy has got speed and ball skills plus a little more size than Earl Thomas. If we can't get Thomas in the 1st then this guy is the best FS left on the board at this point.

4. Ryan Mathews-RB, this guy has the total package, size, speed, quickness, vision, and cutback ability, but comes from a small school, he'd be great in the ZBS, he may go in the bottom of the 1st but I think he goes in the 2nd.

5. Jahvid Best-RB, he could possibly go in the 1st round and is the same type of runner as Spiller but not as much power, very fast, quick, and great cut backs.

6. Brandon Ghee-CB, I don't know much about this guy but have read really good things lately. He's got size and speed and plays man coverage very well.

7. Perrish Cox-CB, another good man coverage CB with size and speed but he's had some off the field troubles so I'm not sure if the Texans will take the chance.

8. Patrick Robinson-CB, he's a carbon copy of Dunta and has really good numbers but he didn't have a great year, he played on a team with a terrible Defense though. His stock is falling lately but I still think he goes in the 2nd round.

9. Maurkice Pouncey-C, he's the top rated C and can also play OG and RT in a pinch, he'd be great on our line at LG playing and learning from Myers for a year and then taking Myers spot after next season. No way Kubiak starts a rookie at C though.

10. Chad Jones-FS, another great S, this position and class is very deep. He's got Taylor Mays size but a little slower and has ball skills unlike Mays.

11. Morgan Burnett-FS, another great ball hawk with size, speed, quickness, closing speed, and hitting ability, he may get moved to SS though.

12. Lamarr Houston-DT, if he has a great post season and combine then he could move up to the 2nd round. He's quick and has decent size but not great, good penetrating UT.

Let's hear you guys opinions. There are other players but I limited the choices to positions of greatest need.

I'm hoping Earl Thomas is our first round pick. In that case I would like to see us take Asamoah with the 2nd rounder, but obviously this changes if we end up with Iupati in the 1st though.
 
well if the Texans select DB in first they should address interior offensive line with OG/C.

tough choice between Pouncey, C or Mike Johnson LG

I'm still going with Mike Johnson because one he should still be available, two he starts first week, three fits ZBS
 
If Best, Dwyer or Matthews falls to the 2nd it would be tough to pass on them. Very tough. I like Pouncey, if we just grab the best interior linemen from the SEC every year we will have a very good line. Chad Jones in the 2nd would be a steal. Nate Allen is another good safety that could go around there. Going to be a lot of different directions we could take but there will be some seriously talented players available at multiple positions.

I agree with the choice of Johnson out of the available choices, but I'm more inclined to go after a veteran O'lineman or two in free agency this year.

With that, given the impact that pollard had from the SS position this year, I'd take a long look at Nate Allen. With Warren & Allen selected, our secondary should be complete, whether or not Dunta resigns.
 
For those who think that RB is our top need, I think Mathews will be the best back in this class. I would snag him in the second no problem.
 
My goodness, I think I'm more intrigued about these 2nd round'ish prospects than those around #20!

It's a lot to fall in line, but I would love if we could get an OG, RB and DT in free agency that the staff feels comfortable with starting/rotating. No superstars, but the quality pick ups that Smith usually produces. Then if no top prospects (for us) falls to our 1st rd pick, trade down to get more picks and get some of these FOOTBALL players that lack the 'measurables'. These guys always slip but end up making the better pros. The guys that go late 1st or 2nd, like: Demeco Ryans, Antoine Cason, Matt Forte, Ray Rice...

The thing that frustrates me is that there's still so many guys I like but so few draft picks for us! If we got OL/RB early I'll be frustrated we didn't address the secondary. If we go DB/OL... I'll be hoping we get a steal at RB later... if we go RB/DB... where's the starting OL help! aah.
 
In some form or fashion I would like to see a OG/RB/CB in rds 1-3.

If they go RB in the 1st I would go off your list Asamoah, Ghee,Johnson,Pouncey.

I think Smithiak should think about trading back into the 2nd rd and filling these needs.

Trade fututre draft picks if you have to but fill these 3 needs.

I could see it hapening because if Smithiak dont win this year there wont be a next year.

I'd push for a trade down picking up another 2nd by offering our second 5th. Too many good players available here.

1. Iupati 2 A. Perrish Cox 2B. Chad Jones 3. Gerhart if others are right & I'm wrong he'll be there. 4. Thomas Ausitn for Oline swing & future center.

Don't get me wrong, I like those two as well and would definitely be happy, but the more I watch Dixon (ever since he carried three UH defenders into the EZ last season), the more I think his stock could rise a bit. Just putting his name in the hat for now...

Jon Asamoah would be the best pick for us. He fits our ZBS perfect if you watch some game film on him. He is not the power blocker like Iupati or Bulaga. Asamoah uses his quickness and adjust to defenders really well.

There is an argument to be made that often you are getting a player on the same level around 20 or so that you are at 50. Often you will see a guy though of broadly as a 2nd rounder but is drafted in the 1st because of a combination of team needs, team rankings and position scarcity (see Duane Brown in 2008). For those reason a late first in your eyes can be there in the mid 2nd. It is key for your GM to be able to see the big picture of a particular draft and what you are trying to accomplish. While a ton of draft talk is the Texans need a ____ most, so they should draft the highest ranked _____ in round 1, the process is way more complicated than coming up with a grocery list and putting players in the shopping cart when your turn comes.

I hope everyone has been following the Senior Bowl practices this week. All three of these guys have been impressive and Ben Tate has probably moved himself up to the 2nd round.

I like the Senior Bowl better than the combine for talent evaluation since it's in pads practices/drills against top competition in real game situations with a real game at the end of the week. The combine is nice but it's all measureables and numbers, there's no game or in pad workouts, and that 40 time is so overvalued. They should run the 40 in full pads and helmet, not track suits.

Agreed. They should at least have a separate measure. Not only the 40 but just as importantly are the 'change in direction' drills.

My problem with Senior Bowl and East West is being able to know when player I want to watch is in the game. Often the announcers are talking crap with some former player that I care little about or giving a sideline interview about the Td run or tackle or reception the series before. The screen goes to little bitty and I can't find anyone. At beginning of a series give me the lineup of who is on field then for D & O. Usually they will be in for 2-3 plays. On evaluating players I try to focus on team needs identified by Texans. For example, last two years SMith and Kubes have stated top priority need is RB that can score in Red Zone, move the pile to keep our D off field and get a first on short yardage plays. I do not focus on CJ SPiller, Best, McKnight & McCluster are not on my priority list. All are productive but not for that need. Matthews, Tate and Hardesty fall just below the big guns, Dwyer, Gerhart and maybe Dixon. If we draft Iupati 325 lbs and if he starts by mid season, we still have a very light 3/5ths of Oline. If we run behind Brown and Iupati on left, the D just adjusts and shuts us down. We need a back that can score running left, right or through our center.
If we can select Iupati, Asamoah, Mitch Petrus or Johnson and Dwyer, Gerhart or Matthews and a CB in first 3 rounds, that is a very productive draft.

I think after this week even though he is a guard, Iupati has shown enough this week that everyone who can not block the inside on passing downs or run the football i.e not in the top ten in rushing, is going to covet the guy. I really doubt he's going to be there at twenty.

Agreed. This time of year, more info surfaces and we adjust our thinking. He was never my guy for Texans anyway. I like Asamoah in 2nd and Petrus in 3rd. Probably going to re-mock with Kyle WIlson CB at #20, Gerhart in 2nd and Petrus in 3rd.
