Dunta, didnt one of the RAMS(yeah i said rams) WR burn you? Lucky the QB wasnt good to complete the pass. Glover Quinn was great this year. Just a bit more experience and dont be surprised if he starts shutting people down. Welcome to Quinn Island:evil:

That brings up a question for me. Was Dunta playing more of a bend but don't break coverage? I'm not sure that there are many folks out there in TT land that was screaming at him more than me for the school bus size cusion that he seemed to give every WR. with that being said...his quote made me try and think back to how many times he did get "torched". With the hugh cusion he was consistantly getting beat underneath, but don't remember him getting beat deep (and WR making the catch) that much. Was this some sort of self admittance that he can't lock on to a WR and stay with him, but smart enough to know that he can keep the underneath reception from turning into a big gainer?

What is Dunta talking about? I thought we played coverage by side, where Dunta always lined up on one side of the field and whoever was number two lined up on the other side.

That's what they've done in the past, but this year they had him move around to follow the top receiver.

Maybe that's Bush's philosophy, or maybe they were just making him earn every penny.

To accomplish that he would have had to cover the TE and BOTH WR at the same time.
 
The cornerback position makes me nervous. I'm simply not ready to buy into what everyone is saying about Quin being a shut-down receiver. Don't get me wrong, I really like the guy and have high hopes for him, but as of right now its just that...hopes. I would not feel comfortable going into next season with him lining up against top receivers.

The Dunta situation is still a mess. It still seems like he has a really high opinion of himself and will be looking for a big pay day. Chances are he will want more $ than he's worth, and some other team will give it to him if he decides to test FA.

Reeves is a solid player and I'm glad he is on our team. He provides us with consistency that we don't get from any other player.

There is some potential here, but we definitely need to add another corner or two to this team before the next season starts.
 
I thought Quin was exceptional for a rookie as well. I cannot recall seeing a Texan CB make as many plays, in a season, with the ball in play than he.
 
I still say let Dunta waste some other team's money. #1 CB's aren't supposed to allow catches and then tackle. #1 CB's are guys other teams should be hesitant to throw towards. Dunta's not scaring anybody.
 
Quin did really well this season and I love hearing that from Kubiak. Steal in the 4th round!

Thinking of steals in the 4th round at the CB position... so was Fred Bennett in his rookie season. I hope Quin continues to improve but it sounds like Bennett is on his way out. Any chance he can rebound? What is his attitude and work ethic like?

I think we've got great depth at the position but not a true #1 CB. I think Quin, Robinson and Reeves are all better as the 2-4 cb's. If we could just add a true #1, then we'd have a very good secondary. Another #2 or nickle would help but it definitely wouldn't push us over the edge.

I relate it to our WR's. Imagine our wr's without Andre. I think they're all good but none are true #1's. Add in AJ and the others fit their roles perfectly and it becomes the strength to our team. I'm not saying we need an AJ calibre guy for CB, but one that fits the #1 mold and that's not Dunta.
 
Wow. CB position is so weak it's really amazing to think the D was much improved.

Dunta-contract issues and missed camp. Had the pressure on him to perform VERY well and turned in an okay card at best. Sign him to a deal that fits his game or let him walk with all that talk.

Reeves-played solidly but clearly was missed in the first month. I think he's our nickel of the future

Quin-how awesome is it to have a 4th round guy contributing? AND doing well? Nice. Potential starter next year over Reeves or even at FS because he tackles so well.

McCain-dimeback but totally an upgrade over Bennett. Speed and seems to know where he is on the field.

Bennett-sucks

Molden-sucks because he can't play.


I see a high round pick going to the secondary, either FS or CB 1st or 2nd round.

When did 4 receptions for 42 yards and a TD become a good game?

Those have to be the lowest standards for a "good" game that anyone has ever proposed.

For me, Aaron Glenn '02 was the quintessential season for a Texan corner.

Season in review for Texan CBs? Well, I don't think they lost any games on their own. Don't remember them winning any games on their own, either. I would like to see an upgrade, via draft or free agency. If not, I think the Texans could win with this group. Provided they get an improved and more consistent pass rush. Really, who plays CB for the Colts and the Saints? It's nice to have a Darrelle Revis. But, not absolutely necessary.

I don't know if he would be available in the 2nd round, but OK State corner Perrish Cox fits the physical profile Smithiak looks for in a CB.

I am sure we could look up stats and have some sort of baseline for the discussion, and I would not be surprised if you were correct. Glenn was like a blanket and when a ball came his direction he actually caught it. However, Quin just seemed to break up passes/deflections once a game. Granted, he could have been beat, as rookies are more prone to do, and just made a last gasp athletic play.

Fred Bennett 6-1 200 lbs
Antwaun Molden 6-1 202 lbs
Glover Quin 6-0 203 lbs

Three corners Smithiak has selected over the past 3 drafts. All good sized CBs in the 6 ft/200 lb range. I can hear you about to burst out with "But what about Brice McCain? He's not that big." That's true. But I would rebut with a) McCain was drafted to be a nickel CB covering the slot, b) the AFC South employs pretty good-sized WRs (Wayne, Garcon, Britt, Sims-Walker), c) McCain's the exception that proves the rule.

If there's anything else I can help with, be it solving Rubik's Cube, hooking up your surround sound, or instructing on the effective use of sarcasm...let me know. Seriously.

Glover Quin 2009 - 54 tackles, 11 PD.
Aaron Glenn 2002 - 56 tackles, 18 PD, 5 INT's (2 TD's), 1 sack - pro bowl.

I agree, we can win with this group. I'm hoping DT (pass rush) and RB are the two highest priorities this off season. Our pass defense was ranked 18, which would improve greatly with more pressure on the QB IMO.
 
It is amazing how much better our secondary looked once Pollard started playing. Having a CB play and have confidence that the Safety will be where he's supposed to be made a huge difference.

I'm so sick of Dunta and his big mouth. I'll be ecstatic the day that this overrated dude is out of here. He's lived off of the reputation of his first two seasons for years now. He's not a play maker. He's an average cover corner. He doesn't scare any QB's from throwing in his direction. He's just a loud mouth defensive back at this point that's no different than Deangello Hall. I'd rather sign someone else in free agency and let him walk. He tried to hold the Texans team hostage last season and talked himself up all summer long even after being generously over paid and didn't deliver a thing.

Probably, the best UNRESTRICTED FA cornerback is Bodden, who led the Patriots with 17 pass deflections and intercepted five passes.
 
Obviously the big question is are we going to keep DR.
2nd biggest question is are we going to look at a CB in FA.

If we lose DA, it is safe to assume we draft a corner in the first 2 rounds. If we keep DR then look for another late round 4-6 CB selection in the draft.

I would like to think that Smithiak look for more in a CB than just their measurables. I also would like to think that they would draft a 5'9" CB if the value was right.

I'm just guessing here, but this is what I think might happen.

When McNair answered Fatty's question about Dunta, he answered by saying they were working on FA's throughout the league and would address their own ofterwards. Well, Fatty didn't follow up by mentioning they only had until the 25th to make a decision on whether to franchise him. Which is before FA starts. Good job, Fatty.

Anywho, I think we slap a tag on him for the time being. After the FA scrum, attempt to work out a deal with him or find a team willing to trade. I kinda hope we're able to work out a deal with him that's fair for both sides (yeah, in a perfect World maybe). I'd just rather spend that 1dt rounder on a DT if possible or worst case, a FS.
 
tough call about Dunta. the Texans can draft a better long term solution but its gonna cost a #1 to be sure. question the focus moving forward with Kubiak/assistants future contracts done & need for immediate success. There will be initial drop off if they cannot agree on terms & that cost alone may be too high? Love both Quinn & McCain moving forward.

As a GM Rick Smith needs to seperate himself a little bit from Gary & do whats in the best interest of his organization. I would rather pay our own, cause you know what you've got, its kinda like your car, you purchased it new (drafted Dunta) did all the preventitive maintenance & required repairs (acl rehab) know its little nuances (pay me rick) so you have a pretty good idea what to expect in the future, unless you trade it in on a new one why take a risk on a used unkown :truck:

If you're trading in a brokedown 2004 Civic that only works half the time (DR) and upgrading to a 2009 Lexus IS (Kyle Wilson?) then it's worth it. Sure the pedal might stick a few times, but at least he will be going full-speed ahead! :doot:
