Texans linebacker Brian Cushing will not play in the 2010 Pro Bowl. The 2009 AP NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year withdrew from from the game on Friday due to lingering injuries.

Cushing played through foot, knee and rib injuries along with a broken finger in the final games of his rookie season.

"I am really disappointed not to play in this year's Pro Bowl," Cushing said. "This was a long season and due to several injuries, specifically my knee and finger, we've made a decision to rest my body. My health is the most important thing at this point."

Matt should have said no instead of risking injury! Its not like they picked him when they should have.

Damn. I wanted to see Cushing in the Pro Bowl. I bet if it was still in Hawaii, he would go. Oh well, maybe Vince Young can take his spot.

Again, this is going to continue to be a problem with having the game earlier than the super bowl. I don't ever watch the pro bowl, but having the biggest stars in the game not playing in it kind of defeats the purpose.

Honestly. I breathe a sigh of relief, too.

I don't want any of our guys playing in this thing. Sure, it's an honor and everything but I don't want any of our guys risking injury in a meaningless game.

Which is why this game is a joke..if players have any injury they won't play so you get the 3rd or 4th alternate.

They should just give them a banquet...present them a plaque and be done with it.

Wonder if he needs a nurse! I'd donate my time if I thought it would help make him better!

2010 will hopefully be the year of the TEXANS, and our boy Cush will be ready to roll!!!

I'm just waiting for Mario to make the same decision. I'd be surprised if he doesn't. He needs to rest that shoulder!

I know people will be dissapointed but its a smart move for both Brian & Texans :logo:
QFT!

Damn, oh well, he needs some rest after one hell of a year. Next season is going to be even longer!
We certainly hope so.

lol Sandy wants to retire as a hospice nurse for her favorite players! (Maybe Cush & Billy Miller can share a house or something?)

Sad to see he won't be playing alongside Demeco, but good to see he's being smart about things and resting for when things count.
Would have enjoyed hearing the commentaters gush about his skills when nobody rushes past him.
Oh well, at least we got 4 others to watch.

Off topic but: Bastard!!! Your avatar sucks!!

damn man me and my buddies leave for miami on wednesday and i bought tickets to the pro bowl cause i wanted to see cush play

I am disappointed that Cush isn't going...but seriously he was playing hurt throughout the whole season. He needs rest.

Exactly. Give them a plaque or something for an honorarium and cancel the game.

meh...as long as I get a Cush Pro Bowl jersey I'm fine.

dude needs to stay in his hyperbaric chamber until September as far as I'm concerned.

They should play a round of flag football instead, boost the sport and avoid the injuries :)

I wouldn't be opposed to something along those lines. Really when it comes down to it while it's an honor more and more first teamers seem to be opting out of playing.

I think they should do other activities like I've seen on ESPN in the past like QB passing accuracy, who runs some of the drills the fastest, farthest throwing QB, HB and CB races, etc. Make it more fan oriented and make the athletes accessible. That would bring a lot more people tothe pro bowl.

I was listening to Mike and Mike this morning on the drive to work. Greenie hit on an excellent point: is it really an All Star game if the top players are not in it? I say not.

Plus the other thing to think about is that all players in the Superbowl are not eligible. So, if Indianapolis plays Minnesota, they would need to replace something like 16 ALL STARS! That is ridiculous.

I think they should ditch the game completely. Instead of a full weekend "Fan Fest" type of event. Have autograph sessions, a "compete against the pro" challenge (like throwing football through a tire swing", race against Chris Johnson, etc. Doing it this way will allow more of the All Stars to actually show up instead of seeing a game of 4th or 5th alternates play.

Good idea but seriously who would ever win any kind of challenge against an NFL player? I wouldn't want to embarrass myself but I'm a gal so...what guy on here would want to race Chris Johnson and eat his dust?

The autograph stuff is great and all but I think the NFL is firmly entrenched in this farce of a game.

I heard the segment and agree that the game need not be played, but the one remark that really stuck in my craw was when Mike Golic went down the list of players bailing out or whatever and then named the replacements. He mentioned Matt Schaub's name in the most dismissive way possible, which is RIDICULOUS (to borrow his favorite word) considering the season Schaub posted. I was so pissed at that I almost fired off an email telling him where Schaub's 4770 yds passing ranks all-time, but I was hungover and went back to sleep instead.

With regards to the Cushing news, I am both disappointed and relieved. Take all the time you need, Cush. Just stay healthy for next year.

The NFL should follow the NBA model with the Pro Bowl (but do it the week after the Super Bowl instead). The NBA does it right.

They use to play a flag/touch football game with the rookies in Hawaii before the pro bowl, down on the beach until one of them ripped up his knee. It was about 10 years ago I think. Anyone else remember this?

The more I read and hear about this new idea of having the Pro Bowl before the Super Bowl and the more players that drop out the dumber the whole game becomes.

They should just have the game every year in Jacksonville and let their season ticket holders be the only ones that can go...

that may be the total amount of fans that will care! 40! :)

The Pro Bowl is crap anyways. Smart move, better to not risk getting injured than to wear some clown jerseys, and play a meaningless game that nobody watches. :kitten:

This

Get well Cush, it's playoffs are bust next year. You are going to be a big part of the playoff run. Thanks for a great season.

I totally agree. I like the "challenge" part of Pro Bowl week. I usually watch most of those. I don't watch the game at all. I would watch a banquet where they show highlights of the players, and offer them an award.

I would like to see the players "roast" the league MVP's offensive & deffensive.

But this game is too physical to have an "exhibition game" with our top players.

Im sorry but WHAT????????????Brady did n ot have a better year than Matt were we watching the same nfl season.Have u been smoking out of your pipe again?

I agree with what you're saying, but he is Tom Brady. If the Texans would have won 11 games, I'm sure Matt would have beat Brady out. If this was the second season Matt had done this, if he had played healthy all year, Matt would have beat out Brady.

But it is, what it is, and they vote the way they vote. Should have been expected.

Nope. Brees' shoulder was hurt in the last game of the 2005 season against Denver. He missed going to the pro-bowl because of it.

Soooo Brees didn't get hurt in the Pro Bowl...??

If not, the question still stands. Who has been seriously hurt in the Pro Bowl?

For the record, Cushing should do what he thinks is best for his body and to prepare for next season. No question. Although there is a small part of me that thinks that he should go since so few rookies are afforded such an honor and they don't really play that hard in that exibition game anyway.

I'm just glad he was recognized.

I don't recall anyone seriously hurt in the game. There was the LB hurt playing football at the beach - broke his leg and was never the same. McClain couldn't recall anyone hurt the other day either.

I feel the same way for the same reason.

But I'm glad, as you are, he's putting his health first.
