not quite fella, take it easy... what the coaching staff are doing is looking for ways to get two backs on the field at once. norris can block, but he cant run or catch, baxter hasnt shown enough and is coming off an injury, wells offers versitility in that he's big enough (6'1", 245) to block but also has some skills running and catching the ball out of the backfield. i like the move, but wells isnt going to be a typical fullback.

from the article-
"His actual position will be more of a hybrid since he’s likely to receive a fair amount of touches."

“They came to me in the off-season and said they felt we could add some versatility to the offense if Domanick and I were in the backfield at the same time,” Well said during coaching sessions. “So I was welcome to the challenge. I’m definitely still a tailback. I’ve been that my whole life, but I’ll definitely do whatever I can to get on the field.”

after the season wells had last year i would try to get him on the field more...and if that's by making him a make shift fullback then by all means tell him to make the transition...wells has the size to block, run inside the tackles and make some people miss...if he can improve his pass catching ability he could really be a solid piece of our offense...you put him and davis in the backfield on 3rd and 4yds you can bet there is gonna be some little dump pass to one of them...but now you'll have to guess who instead of focusing in on davis

my dreams have been realized!! on a side note, this could also have an unseen benefit in protecting carr, a 245lb body as the last line of defense before our fearless leader gets hit could make our line look alot better. great move by capers, i'm getting even more excited about madden '06 with the backfield we will have

Wells is a good news story for us. His persistence and work ethic have kept him around. If he can develop into a good blocker, we would truly have a solid backfield as he can run/catch. Becoming a good blocking fullback will take some time and reps.

If you read the article is does express that wells can catch.

In workouts this off-season, Carr immediately noticed how Wells’ versatility adds to the offense. Carr expected the running and blocking from Wells, but what surprised him was how well Wells catches the ball.

“He is a really good athlete,” Carr said. “I think he can play either position, tailback or fullback. So getting him involved in the offense either way, where he can catch the ball out of the backfield or play in different spots or even split him out at wide receiver in some sets, I think it will be a big help for us.”

That sums up the Jon Wells I've known. If he wants to be a fullback he has to start delivering blows. So far in his short time here he has yet to play as physical as his body would make one expect. We've never used the Fullback much so perhaps we are working on a sort of an H-back role for Wells.
Tends to shy away from contact when running inside … Runs too upright and will throttle down a bit before taking the hit … Lacks aggression and true body lean through the rush lanes, appearing more comfortable attempting to bounce to the outside … His lateral slide appears a little choppy … Loses his feet at times going in and out of his breaks … Not much of a contact seeker and prefers to not go for the pass in traffic … Will absorb blows as a pass protector, but shows a passive nature as a blocker

exactly Vinny.. I haven't looked it up,but I believe Wells has the Eddie George body type, but doesn't deliver the hits to break tackles. It is a shame he doesn't have that aggression

on that note.. I do think Wells has a bad rap...Some people were saying he was horrible in 2002..but with that line.. I can't imagine anyone looking good.

Considering the OL problems, Adding another big body to protect Carr is a real good thing. I am a firm supporter of Carr's ability to get the ball where it has to go. But, he needs more than 2 seconds to look around. The way the protection has been before, Carr hasn't even gotten the mandatory 3 seconds on a good portion of the plays.

Johnson is talented enough to provide matchup problems. And Wells and Davis are good receivers. You sort out the 2nd wide out, and with Gaffney as the slot receiver, there are going to be opportunities for Carr.

I think this is the end of the line for Jopporu!!!!! Too bad, I tought he was really going to be a good player. But the team must move forth and use the talent Wells possess; and build on it for the future. Miller and the other TE could never help block for Carr!!! Let's hope that Wells can do the job.

i agree with most of what you say, but the only thing bruener does well is block, thats what we use him for - its a shame we cant use him on the left side of the line to help out wand, but (and i may be wrong here) doesnt the TE usually line up outside the right tackle, to the right handed QB's stronger throwing side?

I think your right about the TE lining up on the Right side. But, If there is someone reliable to help on the blocking scheme on the Right side, then the line could move left and help Wand out a bit more. Of course this would only be on occasion. But, a good blocker anywhere on the line added will allow the Texans to help Wand blocking some of the more persistent pass rushers. But adding blocking while eliminating the offensive Options is a big OPPORTUNITY COST!!!

Therefore a fullback may be more of a help for the Texans than a TE at this point. Once the OL gets it groove going, then the Texans may implement the TE a bit more once again.

Right now protecting Carr by either blocking or providing a quick short pass is the most important thing!!! Can Bruener even catch a Nerf ball? Does Miller know what a block is? :embarrass

You have too many guys on the field with your scenario. We won't be in a 3-wr, TE, FB set. Perhaps we use more fullback sets, but I haven't seen much to date.

Joppru will be back next year. Not the end of the line yet. He isn't costing us much money so we won't cut him.

I was implying to use the FB instead of the TE. Because since the TE is too much of a liability in the Blocking scheme or the offensive mobility; then let's get someone who can provide a combination of both. Therefore a fullback is more of an option to win NOW.

And my hopes that Jopporu can ever help this team are out the window. It's going to be his 3 season missed. Can he come back from this? Sure he might not be costing the team much, but he is losing the prime year of his career to injury. He hasn't gotten any NFL experience yet. He might be a coach in training!

I hope your right Vinny!!! But last year it seemed that the coaching staff was getting discouraged with Jopporus ability to stay healthy. And so far Jopporu hasn't done anything to change anybody's mind.

Matchups will dictate our offensive package but I think we will use the 3 wr + TE the most. Camp is in a few weeks so we will all get a good idea what they have up their sleeves fairly soon. :)

Vin you really think we will be using alot of 3WR + TE sets. I think it will be our most dangerous set, but all that you hear is that we are a running team. I personally think we can really air it out this year and with Mathis fitting in at the slot till he learns the ins and outs of the game we might be pretty dangerous. I think using Wells as an H-Back is a smart move, I commented on it in other posts before the announcement. He will provide some interesting options on 2nd and 3rd downs.

I don't know if it is listed anywhere but I think we were in the 3wr set most of the time last year. Perhaps that is a wrong perception from me, but I don't think it is.

Armstrong and Gaff will be in the slot and Bradford and Mathis outside when we are in the 3wr.

I was thinking we might see less of the TE and more of Wells as an H-Back, with a 3-WR set. With 2 RBs and 3 WRs, Carr has max weapons on the field, but options for protection (keeping 1 or both backs in to block). It would be a new look, that I can't say I've seen much from us.

I'd rather see Norris or Breunner in there blocking for Carr than Wells.

I agree with that. Norris is an absolute mauler when it comes to blocking. Wells may be able to give us more offensive versatility, but I don't think we'll ever see him be the same kind of blocker as Norris. It will be interesting to see if Wells will be able to be more productive being in the backfield with DD taking much of the focus of the defense.

I can see Wells in there at the same time, but my guess is that they are going be in a split backfield formation with DD.

I doubt they are going to line up in the I on 3rd downs... on long yardage situations with Norriss or Wells.

I support the team that allows Carr to get enough time to distribute the ball. It's just really a drive killer to get David Carr Sacked even before he gets into the 3 step drop back. That was just painful to watch.

However when Carr had time to unload the ball, he was usually on the money. He didn't make a lot of bad trows when he had time.

But if this is a weak Offensive Line again, Wells would really provide another option for Carr in the short yardage game, by being a decoy of Dominick Davis or vice versa. If the Offensive line can hold his own, then I would rather use the TE more.

Well, training camp is just around the corner of July

Interesting.

Special Teams Coach Joe Marciano loves Wells. A team guy, hard worker, follows instructions, plays hard. He can't be too contact shy if Coach Joe likes him.
