Peyton Manning became the first player to win The Associated Press NFL Most Valuable Player honors four times. The Indianapolis Colts' sensational quarterback romped to the award Saturday in balloting by 50 sports writers and broadcasters who cover the league.

He received 39½ votes to 7½ for Drew Brees of New Orleans. Only four players — all quarterbacks — earned votes. The other two were Philip Rivers of San Diego (2) and Brett Favre of Minnesota (1).

they need to rename this to the Unitas award or something if nobody gets a vote except QB's.

Same thing with the Heisman. It's laughable that they are picking the best player in college football as if that could never be a defensive player or play for a team that isn't great. They should rename it the best QB or RB from a top 10 team award.

I think it's ridiculous to keep giving the damn award to Manning every year. I mean he's had a great season and certainly deserves consideration, but there are three other QB's that are just as deserving if not more deserving that have never won the award at all and need that recognition. Rodgers had easily as good of a season as any QB did and arguably the best season. So did BRees as well. There is an argument for Favre and for Rivers to. The only guy that has won the award before is Favre. Brees, Rodgers, and Rivers may not ever have another season like they did this year where they are as deserving as they are. Manning isn't even the best QB stat wise either. He's up there, but damn, give the award to someone else when they deserve it.

The guy kicks our ass every year, but it's hard not to root for the guy when he's not playing against your team because he's just a flat out beast. Ironically, those last 2 losses they took b/c he didn't play is probably what put him over the top. You saw what they looked...terible. Noone means as much to thier team as he does.

Rivers is the only guy i think deserved it other than him imo.

Chris Johnson's team sucked plus the titans handed him the ball 36 times in the last game of the season just to get him his 2000 yards (the most he'd carried all season & he still barely got it).

Brees & Favre had looked average the last couple of weeks of the season....

Hope Indy enjoys him for as long as he's around. Guy is amazing and the team is terrible without him.

He's basically their coach. Its going to be a harsh reality when he retires.

Cant wait for that day!

So how would those performances differ from some of the average performances that Manning and Rivers both had earlier in the season? What is it different just because it was at the end of the season to you? That doesn't make any sense.

And Rodgers has probably the best argument as the MVP over anyone. The guy carried the Packers all year long and the few losses that they had was on the defense giving up a ton of points in every single loss they had. Rodgers had the most rushing yards and rushing TD's for a QB as well as throwing for like 4,400 yards in the air and 30 TD's to only 7 INT's and did all of that while being the most sacked QB in the league. His offensive line got him killed in the first 8 games of the season. He stayed poised through it all as well and it's only his 2nd season as a starter.

Chris Johnson? I refer to one game: 17 att., 128 yds., lost 59-0.

I hate Manning, but he deserves it damn near every year. It's nice when they give it to someone else, and this year I would have liked to see it go to Rivers or Brees. JMO.

this is why i don't like the award given to the player who is "most valuable" to their team. because it's a nebulous term that cannot be proven or disproven any given year, and people just go into each season assuming guys like Manning are "most valuable to their team" so they are de facto winners from the get-go. the award should be given to the player who has had the most outstanding individual performance in a season, and that belongs to Chris Johnson this year.
