The Seahawks have fired head coach Jim Mora after just one year, FOXSports.com has learned.

It's curious that Seattle would make such a move so soon. Mora took over a 4-12 team, and this year's squad was decimated by injuries and had to endure a general manager leaving during the year.

The Seahawks finished 5-11 this year, third place in the NFC West. They finished the year on a four-game losing streak during which they failed to score more than 13 points in any game.

Seattle has already called for permission to interview other assistants. Likely candidates include Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier, among others.
 
The Seahawks were astonishingly bad. I was actually a litte shocked how much they looked like a USFL team. His Dad, Jim Mora coached a couple of teams that could beat that team I'd bet.

Man, I would've thought they'd at least hire a new GM to make their decision.

Yet another HOU-TEX random comment: If I were a player or coach, Seattle might just be the last place I'd want to go. Right there with the Northeastern teams.
 
Maybe they are a real player in the Cowher sweepstakes? This seem like an odd move. I know Mora is not Lombardi, but the Seahawks weren't Packers of the 60's either.
 
There was talk this year that his players did not like him at all and he didnt know how to use his personal

I have a friend who knows a guy who cleans the pool of a woman who's cousin dated a dude who detailed the car of a guy who said that he knows first hand that the Seahawks actually cover Rich Kotite and are trying to get him to agree to coach the 'Hawks next year.

Word is that J Kelley and Thurman Thomas will both pull a Farve and come out of retirement.

The team will then be moved to Toronto and renamed the Aleuts.

Seattle became a very bad team just four years after a superbowl appearance. Just shows you how hard it is to stay on top.

Eh..I'm no Seahawk fan or even follow them to know but maybe 2 or 3 players on their roster but one year is a real short leash for any coach to have any sort of impact on a team.

Easier to fire a coach than all the players.
 
Very surprising for him to go one and done as HC of the Seahawks. I think Vinny put it right when he said they looked like a USFL team. They were blown out of too many games and didn't show a lot of passion and heart.

That being said, I don't see how you can fire a coach after just one year unless you go like 2-14 or worse. They were almost that bad, but hasselbeck looked really bad this year. He needs to retire or he might get himself killed one day.

This smells like a power move for the Seahawks to go after Cowher, Gruden, or maybe Schottenheimer. If the reports that they are going after Carroll are accurate, then I think they are taking a big gamble.

Maybe we could somehow trade and take Trufant off their hands. AJ made him look really bad but he has done that to everyone outside of revis and asomoghu.

After Hutchinson left it delivered a pretty big blow the the OL and Shaun Alexander wasn't the same after. Always thought he was overrated.

Also haven't had some draft picks pan out as well.

Hasn't he bombed out in the NFL twice? Hmm...somebody told me USC might be in some sort of NCAA violation trouble and perhaps he's bailing out when the bailing is good. Not sure about that..never heard that..although I do remember some issue with Reggie Bush a few years ago that just quietly went away.

And don't forget OJ Mayo in their basketball program and now there is speculation of violations with Joe Mcnight. All of this seems real calculated from Seattle and from Carroll.

looks like there's two pretty good positions open up in the college ranks, if Meyer leaves UF.
 
if i were a minority assistant caoch, i'd charge $250k for the Seahawks to interview me before Monday; cheaper than the fine would be.
 
There has to be something wrong if Pete leaves USC that is the best thing going for him.
 
Well this all happened quite quickly so maybe USC is in some sort of trouble and he is bailing out.

I think you are right. Take that and their down year this year and maybe he thinks he isn't getting through to the kids as well and needs another challenge. No matter how well they are set up, coaches have egos and want to prove themselves

Pete Carroll has reached an agreement in principle with the Seahawks on a deal to be their next head coach, multiple NFL sources confirmed early Saturday morning.


Carroll was fully expected to be introduced by the Seahawks as early as Monday, assuming they comply with the Rooney Rule this weekend.


The hangup could be locating a candidate to interview that would put the Seahawks in compliance with the rule, which requires teams to interview a minority candidate for head-coaching and senior-football-operations hires.

he's not been good in the NFL. Wonder if they even contacted some of the big names on the market or just focused on Pete?

That Rooney Rule is a joke. These teams comply but it's a joke the way they do it!

It is a joke, as well it should be.

Why make Owners and GMs interview candidates they aren't interested in hiring, based soley on some racial minority status?

By the way, what is the punishment for not complying?

It seems pretty obvious that the Redskins and Seahawks knew who they wanted and anyone else that they interviewed along the way never had a chance.
 
I'm not sure but I think a team can lose draft choices if they don't comply..I really can't think of any other way to punish them. I'm not sure I've ever even heard of a team not complying with that rule.
 
I've heard that the Reggie Bush receiving extra benefits thing is going to come to light soon as Bush is in court for receiving illegal benefits and it is not a confidential case.

I can't see him leaving USC if he didn't think there were any sanctions or punishments that were going to be given to USC.

Maybe by forcing them to interview a minority Candidate they figure the interview may go better then the team had thought and end up hiring him?

Other then that seems very useless because they will only interview them if they are a serious candidate anyways.
 
Between Reggie Bush and Joe McKnight in Football, and O.J. Mayo in Hoops, it may not be a happy time coming up for USC athletics.

I actually think it's a good rule for a couple of reasons.

First and foremost, if minority coaches are forced to prepare for interviews - even if the chances are slim/none - it makes them better at something they have precious little opportunity to improve at save for these sham interviews. It may not result in a job with the first interview, but in many cases it will decrease the length of time it takes to get their first HC job.

Secondly, once in a great while, a team's mind is changed. According the the story (which I can't vouch for, but I've heard it enough times to believe there's probably some truth to it), the Steelers had made up their mind on Whisenhunt to replace Cowher, and scheduled the interview with Tomlin to enable them to comply with the rule named after their owner. Tomlin blew them away in the interview to the point that Whisenhunt ended up in Arizona, and brought Russ Grimm with him.

I will agree that most of the time, the interviews are only to comply, and it's once in a blue moon that a team changes it's mind, but forcing a step to happen that probably would never have happened on its own is unfortunately necessary to move things in the right direction.

Yes, I have heard the Pittsburg story from several people. I think it's true.

I think the idea behind this is to get minority coaches into "the pipeline" so they're considered. There are some really good mid level minority coaches out there that could eventually be great head coaches, but they aren't high profile and do not get enough attention.

Look at Kyle Shanahan. He has been an offensive coordinator for five seconds, and everybody and their grandmother wants to make him a head coach. Already. He hasn't done anything to prove he's ready to be a head coach. But because he's the son of a successful NFL coach, he has moved to the head of the class. I'm not saying that Kyle Shanahan isn't smart. I'm saying he has access to the network and pipeline that a lot of minority coaches do not have.

Mora was fired in Atlanta. You may be thinking about the guy who came after him, Petrino. He just up and literally quit on the team in the middle of the season. Total loser.

Patriots senior football advisor Floyd Reese is scheduled to interview this week, a source close to the situation told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.


Reese is the Tennessee Titans former general manager who has spent the past year with the Patriots.
