Gibbs and Rhodes to return next year?

Tailgate

Fall of Hame
The main worry for me is replacing Kyle at the moment... but what if Gibbs and Rhodes depart as well? Nothing is for certain mind you... but that's either way apparently:

Coaching dilemma

The Texans are losing offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan.

They could lose assistant head coach/offense Alex Gibbs and senior defensive assistant Ray Rhodes. They have a combined seven Super Bowl rings.

“I'm going to give these guys a break,” coach Gary Kubiak said. “They need to get away, and then we'll come back and make some of those decisions.”

Potentially quite the bit of shake up on the staff heading into the "all in year."

I think I could take or leave Gibbs. The secondary has done nothing but get better since Rhodes was around, I'd be good with him staying.

Eric Winston mentions some interesting insight into Gibbs' role this past season.
I'd like to see him back. He's kind of taken a step back this year and let (offensive line coach) John Benton do a lot of the stuff, but at the same time, he's in there and just hearing his opinion on things, I think it helps the group. I think it helps keep things new and fresh.

How much has his "lesser role" had an effect on the "lesser performance" of the run game this season?

And the offense has been top 5 (YPG) for both the years Gibbs has been here when they were 14th the year before he got here.

I think it's very difficult to tell the cause/effect relationship with things like this. Sometimes what look obvious isn't, and sometimes, there are things going on that we don't know. I just know that both Gibbs Sr., and Rhodes are extremely highly thought of, and bring a wealth of experience. Hopefully, we'll either have them back, or be able to deal with their departure(s).

Gibbs has that effect... but from what I found mainly in the running game. He always has a top 10 or 5 running game... always. Cept this year was terrible. Was it the injuries? Slatons bad vision? Fumbles? His step back in his coaching role? All of the above?

Its definitely my hope Gibbs comes back, but even more so... cut the crap and get back involved 100%. But all indications seem to be the opposite at this point.

Grooming his replacement? At least in running the scheme?

I'm not sure how we define "Grooming" in this case. The run game took a HUGE step backward. It got better the last two weeks. Is this a case of Benton being allowed to struggle and finding his feet late in the season?

Chris Brown wouldn't be on this roster if it weren't for Alex Gibbs. Nuff said.

I don't think that Ray Rhodes had much impact on this team either helping with DB's or on the overall defense.

Put 'em out to pasture.

Agreed, and while the running game (The 30th ranked running game) is his baby, it's hard to say what overall effect Gibbs had.

For example, I have yet to figure out why opposing defenses seemed to give the running game so much respect on play action passing plays, yet the fact they did is one of the reasons we had the #1 ranked passing offense in the league. I'm not going to assume Gibb's presence had anything to do with that, but I'm not going to write it off as out of the question either.

I was also confused with this. Why Schaub was ever allowed to roll out was beyond me. However, the pass protection was above average and definitely part of the reason he had time on the play action when he stayed in pocket.

I don't think "Putting 'em out to pasture" is even on the table. If Rhodes and/or Gibbs go, it will be because they choose to.

Pretty much the same way I feel. I won't mind if they come back though. If Gibbs leaves Dennison might be the front runner for OC if he isn't already. Maybe he has had as much impact on that vaunted running game as Gibbs has, who knows.

Passing game maybe?

The myth of ZBS and Alex Gibbs are dead. He hasn't turned any mid/late rounders into gold on OL or RB. The one guy who exploded soon dissappeared. Fumbling became a huge issue. The ground game sucktacularly sucks. If I'm to keep drinking the Gibbsian koolaid, he'll have to dump some more sugar in.

If Rhodes is just used as a defensive encyclopedia, buy that dude a phone and call him when you need to.

One of the reasons I wanted Kubiak back, is because of the work they have been doing preparing their young coaches as well as the players. That work is also a reason I have so much optomism about the up coming years. I think we're going to be successful for a long time.

The reason I think the running game took a step back, is because we stopped pulling our guards, & Winston, and went more to a pure ZBS. At the beginning of the year, I don't think we had 5 OLmen who bought into the system, & after Studdard & White/Caldwell took over, I believe there has been huge improvement along the line all year long.

Had Moats got a serious shot since our MNF game, I think we'd have easily won another 2 games.

The offense's rise to a top 5 offense hasn't been on the trenches and the running game that Alex Gibbs has been known to bring to teams. It's been on the passing game.

Hell Mike Sherman's first year here we saw a marketed improvement with sacks even with Carr as QB.

IMO I don't think leaving or returning Gibbs will make a huge impact on the running game.

I feel if we had a top 10 passing defense since Rhodes got here it'd be a big hit if we lost him. That just hasn't been the case though. I think replacing Hoke with a competent DB coach like Gibbs has and will continue to make a big difference in secondary play.

Still not worried about replacing Kyle, still not sure why other people are.
