Non Battle-Red KoolAid Texans Talk on Local Radio

DexmanC

Hall of Fame
I've been listening to this cat for a while now, and he's the ONLY host
on our local airwaves to tell it like it is. He's on 790 from 10 till noon.

If you've heard this guy's show, let me know what you think about it.

I'll listen. Haven't checked him out and I like to stream sports radio when I'm working online.

Does he tell it like it is, or does he just happen to share your opinion?

He's certainly not the only honest sports guy on 790, let alone Houston.

He's the anti-Vandermeer of Houston. I like to listen to both sides, but
for the longest time, we've only got the HOMER side. In the afternoons
you get Lord and Mccain, but we didn't get the other side until now.

Gwynn's not a Texan's hater, he's just doesn't suck up to Texans' brass
like those other guys do.

Charlie Palillo goes without saying, and I'm only mentioning Gwynn because
he's new. 790 now has local talk from 6 am all the way to 10 pm. Good
radio, here.

I still turn on 610 sometimes but they are so silly on there. I mean stupid silly. It's hard to listen to.

I actually enjoy sports talk most when they take alot of fan phone calls..that peaks my interest most..I don't really care so much for the host's opinion but I do like hearing what the average Joe has to say. The guys that go to the games and spend the bucks. I'd rather hear that then listen to Marc Vandermeer talk about "Vanderkid".

The loss of Andre Ware killed that show, in my opinion.
And the loss of the "Sunday Block Party" killed the station.

Haven't heard the guy before. Is he honest, of is he over the top negative like Jackson and Wexler? They annoy me.

Im pretty sure after Gwinns show, there is non local programming, Dan Patrick I believe til Charlie. It sucks because i want a mid day show that doesnt suck......im looking at you 1560 and Ken Hoffman.

They fired most of the good talk guys on there..and kept the others. Marc just annoys me for some reason; he's football smart but he's just so silly. And the new guy with him hasn't struck a chord with me.

IF I listen to them it's on Monday after a game usually because I enjoy the phone calls they take.

Thanks for passing this along. I've felt like I've been in the Twilight Zone the last couple of days. Everyone is acting as if we've won the Super Bowl.

I'm simply astonished that our fans are settling.

Actually a new guy just started yesterday. I didn't get to listen much, but he's worked here before and seems like a tell it like it is guy. Anyways it's local now.

As far as 610 goes yeah they lost it. I mean I don't mind them being homers, but man sometimes it was just hard to stomach. Sometimes they would just gloss over good stuff or give inadequate answers and just meh. BTW John Lopez is being called J-Lo.... really... thats sad.

The mighty Gwin is pretty cool. He's pretty informed and actually demands a higher level of expectations. He acknowledges what the Texans do well, however he doesn't make excuses for their mistakes and acknowledges those as well. I like it.

I've noticed "J Lo" like to toot his own horn alot...I think they had to get somebody in there that would be as silly as Vandermeer is. That's just a fluff show. Nothing more.

I got tired of hearing about the "Vanderkid." Then, a few weeks ago, I was listening in the car and he told listeners to go to the "Vanderblog" and check it out.

I'm about Vandersick of 610.

I love listening to Palillo, but it sucks that he's more about Baseball and college hoops than he is about pro football :(

But yeah the guy from 10 till noon is pretty decent. 790 was going through a bunch of static periods for awhile and they had some real buffoons on (I think it was syndicated guys from whatever network 790 is apart of), about 4 or 5 months ago. Nice to see they've hammered it out better.

I like Gwinn. He doesn't sugarcoat anything. But I will be the first to admit that I probably like him because he shares my opinion.

Charlie is such a dorky nerd..he's sure stat smart and he's always, always on top of names and what they did and when they did it.

It's funny how when you hear these guys on the radio and you try to imagine in your mind what they look like (I do anyway)...anyway Charlie was just as I pictured and so was Rich Lord.

I never thought Vandermeer would be as dorky looking as he is..I didn't expect a Cary Grant type..but he's not what I expected. He looks like a scrawny Chris Collingsworth to me.

Thanks Dexman. It was great to hear someone tell it like it is. And yes I like the fact that he shares my opinion.

Guinn and Matt Thomas are no nonsense guys that seem to be fair. They aren't homers.

They take alot of calls.

I'm glad that a sports talk station has finally decided to go all local.

They give callers priority over talking about there personal lives or trying to be stand up comedians.

It seem as though the station GM has finally gotten sports talk right.

I don't think you can throw the folks at 1560 into the homer, suck up to the owners crowd. Just sayin.

It just sucks that it's so hard to hear 'em on that ham radio they call
a radio station. They need to take up a collection and buy a signal
from one of those Spanish stations.
:sarcasm:

The one thing I don't like about Guinn's show is that he tells you about 100 times during his show that he isn't like other shows. That makes him come off as a sensationalist to me, but his show is fun to listen to.

Am the only one who is getting fed up with 1560. The morning and afternoon programs, have become JIM ROME-like, meaning that there is a steep learning curve filled with inside jokes.
And dont get me started on their midday shows. I find it hard for anyone to find them interesting.

1560 must have the weakest signal ever..never been able to get that station. Not at home. Not in the car.

Little Quinn...sux...period. He's like a kindergarten version of Jim Rome.

The dude's not very bright.

If you're in the cubicle crowd (sheep following along with the herd) he's great.

It's stoopid to say everyone is satisfied with this year's results. But it is what it is...

I said 9-7 before the year started and thats what we got. There are too many voids in the Texans roster to sit here and constantly suck your thumb crying about how YOU could do any better.

You couldn't...you can't with the Texans and you can't do better than those you report to at your job. Thats why they da bosses and you punch a clock.

Even John McClain said as much in his column today and by now I would venture to guess that the bloggers out there are puking back up what was written by him again.

They should be called 1560 The Morning Show because it takes a dive after that.

Lol. Well, to be honest, not everyone who is promoted to the boss is smarter than the people they bypassed. I have worked for people who were CLEARLY promoted based on their politicing and butt kissing skills. They knew how to chit chat, but didn't have the full competency to supervise.

I once worked for someone who wasn't as smart as I was and it was the most mentally draining experience I ever had.

Not a big fan of this guy. It has nothing to do with him not being a homer. It seems to me sometimes he disagrees with people just to disagree. He almost seems anti-Houston, just to get a rise out the callers.

Oh, and he thinks Titan Rick, is one of the best callers in sports talk history....he actually said that one day. :ok:

Titan Rick? Really?? I haven't listened to this guy yet, but this lets me know all I need to know. Thanks!!

He let Titan Rick on Monday after the game, but the 610 guys banned him.
I like an open forum, so you'll hear Titan Rick and Lamont right after him.
Larry in Stafford hasn't been as goods since he doesn't have Andre Ware
and Lesbian Craig to interact with anymore. 610's going down the tubes
like somebody poured Drain-O over their heads.

Actually 610's ratings were up. But I think 1560 had gained on them again?

I believe 790 is in 4th but I could be wrong.

Larry is a good dude and can roll with anyone he chooses.

610 banned him too? Was it for welching like he did on 1560?

What did he welch on? It doesn't surprise me John and Lance would ban
somebody. Way back in the day, when they were on 610, they banned
another hilariously controversial caller named Collie. If ya'll ever heard
that cat, he makes Larry in Stafford sound "layed back."

All of these examples of callers with reputations just bring up something...the callers on sports radio are what makes the shows interesting/funny..however you wish to spin it.

The hosts are just surface to me. I want to hear what the fans say. Even if it is dumb stuff.

He made a bet with Lance before the '08 season that the Titans would sweep the series with the Texans. If T-Rick won, John and Lance would have to buy him a lunch or dinner or something. If Lance won, Rick had to get Toro tattooed on his ass.

He called up after the Texans beat the Titans and said that he wasn't getting the tattoo because the Texans didn't beat the Titans, the Titans beat themselves. So, he got banned from the show.

He's the second person to get banned from the show for welching. I can't remember the other guy's name, but he was supposed to shave his head and wouldn't do it. He eventually acquiesced and was allowed back on the show.

He made a bet to get a Texans tattoo if the Texans beat the Titans. Well they did and he wussed out or welched on the bet.

*EDIT* That bastage Nero beat me to it and had more detail.

Before the '08 season, TR called in and bet JHohn and Lance that the Titans would sweep the Texans. The bet was if the Texans won just 1 game he had to get a tattoo of the Texans' logo on his @$$. After the first game when they beat us he called in and went on and on about it. After the second game when we won he called in and refused to do it stating the Titans didn't actually lose the game. They banned him until he can man up on the bet. A bet is a bet.

*EDIT* See above two posts

Totally disagree. I mean I don't mind hearing differing opinions on stuff but when they get these "glorified" callers calling in, the Titan Rick, the Longhorn Scott, the Collie's, the Brad in Spring Branch, etc. etc. I have no interested at all hearing what these morons have to say and it makes for bad BAD radio. Nothing at all entertaining about ignorance and callers like those have the market cornered on ignorance.

To each his own...I stream different cities and garner quite a bit of information from fans that is more entertaining to me than a radio host talking about his young son or what movie he recommends. But like I said to each his own!

Right on! :bravo:

What really gets to me is what he said about a successful business man achieve their mission and if not it is a failure. But I think, uncle Bob seems to me more successful business man than Gwinn and if Bob thinks Kubiak is worth awhile to keep with team as HC, would you believe Gwinn's opinion over Bob's as a successful business decision maker stand point?

I am not protecting Kubiak at all. It is just what Gwinn said about things that gets to me. He sure sounded like he is a successful business man and knows what he is talking about which I do not agree with.

There's so many way to make your company a success. For example, 5 year company project that is completed about 80% after 5 years and you see that this project can be completed in another year, would you quit and start with new manament to take over? Yes, some company may complete project in lesser time table and some takes more. This is strictly Bob's decision and currently he thinks this project can be completed with current management. Only time will tell if this decision was good or not. But Gwinn to question Bob about company decision? To me, it is very weak argument.

Although Gwinn seems like telling his honest opinion, you gotta realize that Gwinn is in media business and you can get more attention by criticizing the Texans and with perhaps higher ratings. So for Gwinn, it is a win win situation.

I feel ya on this, Samurai, but I'd like you to consider that football is
a two-headed business. On the one hand, you have to be profitable.
On the other, you have to WIN. Mcnair has been extraordinarily successful
at the money-making part, but has failed at the winning part. The
Texans are one of the five most-profitable franchises in the NFL, but
are the only franchise still without a playoff appearance. If this team
is to maintain credibility with its fanbase, next year MUST deliver a playoff
appearance NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS. Five years in, you must ride
with what you got, and there will be NO EXCUSE for missing the playoffs.

If they gotta win 12 games to get in, they better make DAMN SURE they
win that 12th game. If they gotta win the division to get in, they better
make DAMN SURE they split with the Colts and sweep the VY Titans and
the Tebo Jags.

2010, they have to get into the playoffs, EVEN IF they lose half their roster
to injury. EVERY PLAYER on the squad is now a Smithiak decision. Five
year plan, time to roll into the playoffs with NO EXCUSES.

Finally some sense comes down...
