Ryan

THIS YEAR
Who is the Texans MVP for this season in your opinion?

To me, it's clear as day. Ever since we signed Bernard Pollard our defense made a complete turnaround and became a very solid group, without him, we would have had an extra couple losses including yesterday.

Matt Schaub he put up unbelievable stats and you see how we did when he got hurt and rex came in during that jax game

Wow, it's tough.
Schaub, Pollard, AJ, Kris Brown......WAIT A MINUTE!

I'll go with Manly Matt Schaub. He ain't Fragile Matt no more!

Schaub and AJ are clear frontrunners for Offense.
Cushing and Pollard are clear frontrunners for Defense.

The Brown brothers go on my hall of shame

AJ is far and away the best player on the team, but Schaub is the most valuable to our success. Without him this offense goes nowhere. As good as AJ is they could function with him out.

Matt and AJ as offensive co-MVP's

D-Ryans as defensive MVP. The dude's been a warrior this season.

He has been a warrior this year. I kinda feel bad for him in a way because he's always being asked about Cushing in his interviews. I wonder if he's like "WTF....I'm busting my ass out there too and making big plays". Plus, he's a HUGE reason why Cushing had an amazing rookie year. I'm definately a Cushing fan, but Ryans is the leader of our linebackers.....no question.

Could you explain the choice of Demeco and ellaborate as to why?

I'm not saying that you're wrong by any means. I'm just interested to hear why you would pick Demeco. That's an interesting pick.

I chose Pollard but I think it should be shared by Pollard/Cushing/Smith. The addition of those three players on the defense altered the attitude of the entire group which I believe had a profound effect on the entire team.

Going into Sunday's game, Demeco was 6th in the NFL in tackles, and Cush was 2nd, I think (1st in AFC). The two of them added up to a larger percentage of their team's defensive plays than any other duo in the NFL. Given that Demeco's done this since his rookie year, and the fact that he's the QB of the defense, I think it's safe to say that Cushing landed in a cushy situation. Cush is a beast, don't get me wrong, but I think Ryans is more valuable overall, IMO. Cushing is the playmaker, Pollard was the polish on an almost-good defense, but Ryans is the glue that holds it all together.

On offense, I can argue the same for Schaub, but I'm going with AJ because I think he's the heart and soul of the offense. He is the inspiration for everyone else out there. I'd put Schaub 2nd by a nose.

I picked AJ for "O" and I would pick Pollard for "D".

The reason I chose Pollard was because the defense was complete suck before he got here. 'Meco and Cush were part of the defense full of suck (and I'm not putting it on those two). I'm just saying that Pollards contribution was extremely valuable. That said I don't think Ryans or Cushing is a bad pick either.

Agreed! I like Cush a lot, but D-Ryans was huge for us this season. I won't go as far to say D-Ryans made Cush's year, but he had a hand in it.

It's just a personal observation by watching and re-watching every game. Don't get me wrong, Cush is a beast. Like Cush, he's a sideline to sideline tackling machine. I think where he deserves the nod over Cush is the amount of mistakes made. Cush made his fair share of mistakes. He obviously makes up for them, but it doesn't dismiss the fact they happened. No, D-Ryans wasn't perfect, just moreso than Cush.

End the end, I like them both....a lot! As Cush learns and grows I think he'll be the better of the two. I'm giddy we've got the both of them and very excited we get to watch them grow and be one of the best LB duos in the league.

Oh yeah, Diles is pretty ok too. :)

AJ for my pick. We lose at least 2-3 other games without him. Schaub and OD close second.

Pollard tied with Cushing for my defensive MVPs. Other teams are going to gameplan around Cushing when he fully matures, IMO, much like they did for Ray Lewis in his prime.

Wow! I am surprised that AJ isn't winning by a landslide. Schaub had a great season, but I don't think he puts up anywhere near the numbers he did this season without AJ.

On defense, it is a toss up between Pollard and Cushing, but I would give it to Pollard because of the huge difference in our defense from the first day we brought him in. We went from being awful against the run to very good/great against the run when we brought him in.

I have to block out AJ and Cushing, because those two guys were known pieces of our puzzle before the season starts.

My vote goes to Pollard because he, IMO, made the DL and LB crew a lot better because of his immediate impact in the secondary.

Before Pollard, the secondary was a wasteland where WRs and RBs loved to roam and have a field day.

Pollard put on a sheriff's badge and shot anybody who entered the secondary.

He made interceptions; KEY interceptions. He came up and was magnificent in run support.

I think the defense got a spark due to him.

A case can be made for a three-way tie between AJ-Cush-Pollard.

And then there's Schaub, who stayed healthy, stayed on the field even after a dislocated shoulder and a pain shot in the locker room, and then he dealt well with the loss of OD.

If we draft very well, and if we acquire another type of guy like Pollard was this year, we can overcome Gary Kubiak. It'll be hard, but I think we can do it.

To me Brian Cushing.

I think without his play the defense looks like a Dick Smith defense and we're still left with a bottom tier defense.

Good post and good explanation. I think Cushing was definitely the most valuable player though and moreso than Demeco, but Demeco isn't a bad pick at all if you view things that way.

Aj would not have put up half the numbers he did without
Schaub.

This is incredibly wrong here. AJ is the best WR in football unless someone wants to make an argument for Fitz. As long as AJ is in any offense that's halfway competent and has decent protection he dominates. Saying that AJ would not put up half the numbers that he does without Schaub is one of the funniest things I've ever heard honestly. That's under valuing his talent to a huge degree.

I agree that Demeco is the glue of our defense, and his loss would hurt us more than anybodys on the defense, but i don't want to lose anyone. You could also argue that for Mario since he seems to be the only true pass rushing threat we have at this point in time, and hopefully Smith/Barwin can keep improving in that case.

I think Dre has been here for so long he's taken for granted.

I think 90% of Texans fans would say AJ is the best WR in the NFL. I don't see how that is taken for granted.

Best year prior to Schaub 1147 yards on two more receptions than this year. Now he has back to back seasons of almost getting to 1600 yds. 350 yds more. No other QB/WR combo in the league hooks up like these guys do. It's both of them.

Kinda off-topic, but didn't want to start a new thread.

Texans RE Mario Williams will have his shoulder scoped this offseason.

The procedure will probably happen by the end of the month, and not threaten Williams' status for OTAs. Mario's nine sacks in 2009 were his fewest since his rookie year, but he played hurt all season and has been snubbed previously. He's still one of the game's top-ten all-around defensive ends.

A lot to chose from. Dre, Meco, AJ, Matt all had good years but I'm going to go with Pollard. He brought a toughness to this team that it had never had before and desperately needed.

Good job, hope your back with us next year.

I think AJ staying with the Texans sets an example above and beyond his excellent play on the field. When the rumor came out after losing four in a row that he wanted to be traded, AJ immediately squelched the rumor and matter-of-factly stated that he wants to win with the team that drafted him. And this doesn't even touch on his work ethic that inspires players from both sides of the ball, as well.

While Schaub is certainly deserving of mention, he's just finished his FIRST full season. AJ is the glue, the inspiration, the driving force of this TEAM, whereas Schaub is potential MVP of the offense. AJ's dedication to this franchise, while being one of the top WRs in the NFL, goes a whole lot further than just gameday.

True. The Texans now have several top tier guys on the team but AJ isn't just best on the team, he is best in the league. Seems like unless you can argue someone else is clearly the best in the league at their position that he should get MVP of the team.

I guess it depends on what you consider the "Most Valuable Player".

If the poll is "Who is the best player on the Texans roster" then it's hands down Andre Johnson.

If you take MVP as literally who is the most valuable to the team, then a league leading QB is always going to win out over a league leading WR. We saw what this team looked like with Rex out there. He couldn't do anything even with AJ to throw to. Meanwhile Matt threw for over 3,000 yards and 20 TDs to people not named Johnson. That's a solid season for most QBs.

Which is why I went with Schaub. Clinched by the fact that we had zero running game this year which makes Matts numbers that much more impressive to me.

That's an excellent point on behalf of Schaub. I'm glad we can have this discussion, too. It is refreshing to have a QB who is worthy of such talk.

True as well. But is that more a comment on the quality of the respective backups? How would that 3000 yds have been effected if AJ isn't on the field. I think Schaub would still do well but it would have been much harder. I'd have liked a co-MVP option because Schaub and AJ together carried this team.

Great post and excellent point about AJ. While I do think AJ is really in a league of his own (first WR to post back to back 1500 yard seasons since Jerry Rice).

I don't want to seem like myself or anyone takes him for granted in that barring injury I think we all expected it from the league's best. I think there's little doubt in my mind without him this offense doesn't click.

That said our offense was potent last year and I think we expected it to be similarly potent as well this year. Our defense struggled last year and we knew that if we wanted to make a move towards a winning season and the playoffs we'd need for it to get better. Based on the way this defense looked prior to Cushing getting up to speed (missed most of the pre-season if a remember right) and what it looks like after he's gotten up to speed. I think the difference is night and day.

I just really think without him this defense looks just like Dick Smith's and we're left angry and puzzled about another sub par year on that side of the ball.

Jerry Rice missed being in the club by one yard. Marvin Harrison is the only other WR with back to back 1500 yd seasons.
