Staying Pat: What Killed The Texans' Offensive Personnel

When Gary Kubiak got to town, he made a big deal out of competition
during training camp. No one was named starter. You earned your job
on the field. Last year, instead of getting players to push Slaton, Myers, or
Brisiel for their jobs, all those guys felt comfortable in knowing their jobs
were safe. Kubiak even brought in Matt Turk last year to push Stanley
for his job. Kris Brown has never had to compete for his starting spot, either.

Unless you're a probowler, or All Pro, you should not feel your job is safe
on this team. What has Myers, or Chris Brown done to merit such loyalty
when EVERY game matters? We didn't make the playoffs today, because
we simply weren't ready to play on OPENING DAY. Brisiel and Myers are
fringe NFL players, and the coaching staff made sure they weren't challenged
in their jobs during training camp.

We caught Lightning in a Bottle with all five O-linemen staying healthy thru
the season. They KNEW such an occurrence was RARE, yet they decided
to forgo a search for better talent, and we got burned.

In the NFL, if you're not improving, you're getting worse. The great players
know this, and they bust their asses ALL OFFSEASON to get BETTER. They
don't sit at Wingstop putting on weight when they run for 1500 yards their
rookie season. Chris Johnson busted his ass during the offseason, and rushed
for 2000 yards this season.

As a team, and an organization, you must constantly look to improve EVERY
position on the team. Each player must strive to improve his game, every
year. If you ain't getting better, you're falling off. This is the lesson
that was handed to this team, and it's up to their coach to learn it.

2010: NO EXCUSES!!!

meh . . 2009 was the year of no excuses, and so was 2008.

How many coaches bring in RB's to compete with a rookie of the year candidate RB? Did TN? No. Stupid argument. You bring someone in to augment, not compete.

Meyers and Briesel? Uh, duh 3rd round draft pick to compete for both positions.

Kubiak even brought in Matt Turk last year to push Stanley
for his job.

This is Turk's 3rd year as a Texan. I'll call that a quadruple bogey.

True, But the Titans already had LenDale White on their roster, a 2nd year player coming off a 1,100 yard season with 7 TD's. In this league to be successful these days you have to have two good RB's on the roster or a superstar. I think Dexman is right, When you think you're job is secure you start to slack and for a team that has yet to make the playoffs, IMHO, right now the only two players on the offense that should feel safe is Schaub and AJ.

I'm not going to say that Kubiak made the right call on every personnel decision, but come on, who the hell was available to replace K. Brown mid-season. Or Meyers? He gets a demerit for having Foster on the bench for so long, but he already had Slaton, Brown and Moats, how many roster spots should RB s take up?

This off season should be interesting and will be Heavily scrutinized. Prepare for everybody to peg us as a dark horse next season.

LenWhale had 1100 yds (at 3.7 ypc) due to coaching philosophy (dedication to run game and D) and the team wasn't happy with 1, 2, 3 flop here's a donut hole, get back up.

Well, Happy or not they made the playoffs with him as the starting RB, Something the Texans have yet to do. Even at 3.7 ypc, 1-2-3 flop = first down and keeping the drive alive. :D

Off the top of my head... Warrick Dunn and Shaun Alexander were/are availible...
