When Gary Kubiak got to town, he made a big deal out of competition
during training camp. No one was named starter. You earned your job
on the field. Last year, instead of getting players to push Slaton, Myers, or
Brisiel for their jobs, all those guys felt comfortable in knowing their jobs
were safe. Kubiak even brought in Matt Turk last year to push Stanley
for his job. Kris Brown has never had to compete for his starting spot, either.
Unless you're a probowler, or All Pro, you should not feel your job is safe
on this team. What has Myers, or Chris Brown done to merit such loyalty
when EVERY game matters? We didn't make the playoffs today, because
we simply weren't ready to play on OPENING DAY. Brisiel and Myers are
fringe NFL players, and the coaching staff made sure they weren't challenged
in their jobs during training camp.
We caught Lightning in a Bottle with all five O-linemen staying healthy thru
the season. They KNEW such an occurrence was RARE, yet they decided
to forgo a search for better talent, and we got burned.
In the NFL, if you're not improving, you're getting worse. The great players
know this, and they bust their asses ALL OFFSEASON to get BETTER. They
don't sit at Wingstop putting on weight when they run for 1500 yards their
rookie season. Chris Johnson busted his ass during the offseason, and rushed
for 2000 yards this season.
As a team, and an organization, you must constantly look to improve EVERY
position on the team. Each player must strive to improve his game, every
year. If you ain't getting better, you're falling off. This is the lesson
that was handed to this team, and it's up to their coach to learn it.
2010: NO EXCUSES!!!
