Well it turned out to be a pretty good season

This was a fun season... it had some really high highs and some really low lows.. but in the end I am excited to see what next year will bring.

Secondary and Running back. If we can address those two weaknesses... and get OD back and 100%.. then I think there is nothing to stop us from our first playoff berth next year.

Its been fun folks.. least we can hold our heads high this year.

Offensive line needs to be the #1 priority....that and CB, because Dunta needs to be gone. I don't think running back is that big of a issue. Foster, Slaton, and mid-late draft pick should be fine.

I would like us to improve our record against divisional opponents. The offensive line needs some serious upgrades and I would like to see us overhaul our defensive secondary, we need to draft a good cover corner or sign one in the FA, we also need a RB but with the way Foster has played I would like to see what this guy can do all 16 games so a RB may not be priority numero uno. :fingergun:

I think his year stunk. We should have won more games. This mini-winning streak didn't happen until the pressure was off (excepting the 2h today).

eh.. I honestly think that we need a better RB to take the running game to the next level. We will see though.

Kicker needs to be a big priority for us as well.

Despite our slump in the middle of the season.. we still finished with our first winning season. And dont forget that we were playing MUCH better when OD was in the game.

It was a good year.

Good post. I tend to agree - glad to see the team play hard these final four weeks.

However, I am concerned that we didn't make the playoffs in a season where Schaub stayed relatively healthy. And next season's schedule (NFC East, AFC West) will probably be a bit tougher. We will have to sweep the Jags and Tacks to have a shot at the playoffs next season...

That is a matter of opinion. One man's floor is another man's ceiling.

i'm not going to let the bengals laying a big orange and black egg ruin what was one of the most exciting days of football in my life!
who would have thought that week one loss would come back to haunt us like this!

I was going to start a thread like this, but I'm glad you did. I feel the same way. Sure, I'd have liked to have it turned out better and there are plenty of "what ifs", but we did improve. We took a step forward here, and one back there, but we are a better team IMHO. We still need some help with a couple of key positions, but we are definately heading in the right direction. I'm glad Kubiak gets another year and I will definately be a harsher critic with him next season. I was a tad more realistic with my expectations and we ended up about where I thought we would. I figured if were going to end up in the playoffs, it would be as a wild card team. I didn't figure it would play out as it did, but such is life. Anyways, we ended on a good note and I can't wait for next season to get here. So here's to the draft in April and fast offseason...:wesmantexanfan:

I still want an awesome safety okay? Yes Pollard is awesome, but when you pair him up with John Busing or Dominique Barber. . . yeaaaaaah.

From what I've seen from Arian Foster, I'm fine with the RB situation.......enough to not burn a 1-3 round pick on one. Arian Foster has been moving piles and has played great. He also had a 1st to 2nd round grade if he came out the year before. If Slaton rebounds to half the back he was as a rookie (and I think he will), Houston is fine there.

There are bigger needs on this team and most of them play directly infront of our running backs. You can't run the ball if you don't have holes and can't move people, but Foster moved quite a bit of piles today......I really like that kid and was high on him the minute we picked him up. I still don't understand nor will I ever understand why it took Kubiak this long to give him a shot. He was better than Chris Brown the minute he was healthy.

It was a fun season. We played fairly well besides that 4 game losing streak. I thought that we improved as a team this year, and we are taking steps in the right direction.

If we look at all of our losses this year, I think we can pinpoint a few things that we could change to turn them into wins. In particular, we need somebody to hit some clutch field goals, and we need to be able to run the ball better, especially in short yardage situations.

In an ideal situation for me, we will sign free agents at the DT and CB positions. They don't necessarily need to be pro bowlers, but they need to be better than what we have. I would love to see us take Earl Thomas in the first round of the draft, and then address the interior O-Line in the next couple of rounds. This is easier said than done since we will have no control over who the best player available will be. Hopefully we can add a kicker through free agency or in the latter stages of the draft.

I think with these few small upgrades, and the improvement of young players already on our roster, we will be a serious threat to make playoffs.

True but i think the biggest thing we need for next year is just finishing games off.

No matter what we need linemen, a safety, corners, whatever we played good enough to have 11 or 12 wins with what we had which is a great accomplishment.

We just couldnt seal the deal at the end of games and if we learn how to finish(and get a new kicker) we'll be fine.

O and no more Chris Brown. That guy ranks with the worst Texans of all time.

Yes, a true young ball hawking FS would kick ass....I'm actually hoping for Earl Thomas as our #1 pick.

Trade up for Eric Berry!

EDIT: I'm just kidding that guy is going to be off the board well before we can do anything about it.

It was certainly nice not seeing him on the field today. Let's hope he is on the bread line tomorrow.

The easiest way to "finish games off" is to have a reliable running game.....especially a short yardage running game and Houston hasn't had a short yardage running game since they brought over this ZBS crap paired with a even crappier Chris Myers no matter who's running the ball (which is why it doesn't make much sense drafting a RB high right now)

THAT GUY HAS TO GO......I was on vacation the last two weeks (just got back yesterday) so I watched the Tampa Bay and Miami games on my DVR...Myers was owned and out-muscled as usual at the goal line and in short yardage. Dude stinks and needs to go.

Why did we suck so bad at running all season until the last 2 weeks?

I mean was it Foster or did the line learn how to block?

I did notice more pure zone blocking today. It reminded me more of how we were blocking last season with the whole o-line moving in one direction. I haven't seen that too much this season, or maybe I just missed it, but I have made that mental note a few times this year.

The line still sucked. I saw a couple of plays in that Dolphins game where Myers just got owned and pushed over at the goal line. But yeah.....alot of it is Foster. He's a big back who can muscle and move piles, which is why I like him.

Myers doesn't completely suck, he just sucks ass when he has to get tough yards. Houston's running game basically boils down to the whole "drive for show and putt for dough" saying. They can be effective in space and in-between the 20's but are horrible on the goal line or 3rd and short.....that's Chris Myers in a nutshell. Even when everybody was all excited about the running game in '08 that was the case. Even when they were putting up great numbers that was the case. It happened again today.....we were on the 1=2 yard line and failed....luckily Pollard and the defense saved us after a turnover of downs.

P.S.

Did I mention that I loathe Chris Myers :)

Thanks. It just baffled me that the run game opened up the last 2 weeks.

What do you think? Caldwell starting C next year? I didn't really see anything this season that makes me think this should be the case, but I never know exactly what to look for when judging O-linemen.

Not getting pushed 5 years into the backfield is always a plus. :choke:

Lol yes i think you've made that clear all season and i concur he is garbage.

Chris/Kris Brown and Dunta are like a giant loud farts. You know they stink but Chris Myers is a silent but deadly type.

He stinks but unless your paying attention not everybody notices.

They all need to go

We need help in the backfield still none of the guys are first rate backs and slaton proved that his rookie season wasn't something that he could maintain. The offensive line needs to be addressed as well in the draft with the secondary as well. This season was up & down for me and I am a little disappointed that we are not in the playoffs no matter if we went 9-7.

How many playoff teams this year have "first rate backs"? Teams today are mostly built on having multiple "quality runners" and I think Houston already has that. They just need better offensive line play, and where the line goes, the backs will follow. No need on wasting a high pick on a running back when you can get a quality runner in later rounds. (hell we got one without even spending a draft pick). Also even if Slaton doesn't have a year like he did his rookie season.....he isn't as horrible as he was this year either. The guy still flashed his talent once in awhile and if the line improves (up to their 08' ability) I expect Slaton to rebound also. He's going to be hungry next season, which will be good for us......I know he wants to be bigger, but I hope he comes into camp around the 200 pound mark that he played as a rookie. We already have the thunder in Arian......who should split carries with Slaton next season.

I don't think it would be smart to sit back and think that any of the backs will be outstanding next season and none of them really were consistant at all this season. Yes slaton showed improvement towards the end of the season but he had major problems holding on to the ball in key games that cost us bigtime. I suggest we stop messing around and draft a serious running back like Chris Johnson that can help carry this team and still have a quality backup like steve slaton and Arian Foster as the 3rd back. I'm tired of seeing the texans peice together a backfield because none of the running backs can be consistant.

Wat the hell are u guys talkin about a new
RB we just need 2 beef up the o-line and draft
A ball hawk...damn we should've handle our
Business this year w/ a favorable schedule b/c
Next season isn't any easier w/ the nfc east n
Afc west

Umm.....how often does a 2,000 yard runner come along? There have only been 6 in the history of the NFL. Chris Johnson is what Reggie Bush was supposed to be and Bush went #2 ovrl.......Tenn. got a steal, you don't find those backs at where they drafted that kid very often. (where we will be drafting)

As far as "consistency" Arian Foster has been playing at a pretty consistent level when given a chance to play. Also while Slaton did put the ball on the ground this year.....I think alot of that was because he had numbness shooting down his arms due to injury. The guy was great at protecting the ball as a rookie and we don't need to be so quick writing this guy off. Steve Slaton still has alot of talent, and still made ALOT of plays this season. What we need to be doing is upgrading the talent ahead of the backs so these backs can make these plays on a more consistent basis.

I haven't given up on Slaton......he's going to be a huge weapon next season, him and Foster. The problem lies ahead of them (the line) and there's no way in hell Chris Johnson is "Chris Johnson" playing behind that line. Teams with great offensive lines dominate......THAT'S where we need to improve as far as the running game goes. We have enough talent at RB (maybe another guy sprinkled in....but not a first round pick) to get it done.

Although I wouldn't be against bringing in another talented running back, I think fixing the interior of our o-line will go a long way to making all our backs look a lot better. But Slaton's fumblitis worries me... which is really why I wouldn't mind seeing another back come in as the main back with Slaton on 3rd down and Foster as the backup of the main back and Moats playing ST.

I'm hoping that Caldwell progresses and we add at least one more player in the interior of the line. I'm not worried about our tackles and I think Butler looked OK when he played, so I'm not worried about T depth at this point.

Next years draft should be about fixing the D**N O-Line. I think the first two rds.should be spent on the OL. Then the OL would be set for the next 8-10 yrs. The rest of the draft should be focused on the secondary. IMO

FA's Ronnie Brown and Casey Hampton.

Stud RB would fit in well with Slaton and Foster. Can run the wildcat which would help diversify the offense.

Hampton- Bringing home the run stuffing DT this franchise has always lacked wouldn't be a bad thing. IMO

They need to make these moves because they aren't playing the NFC west next year. They're playing the NFC east and that's a different proposition altogether. IMHO

I dont really understand all the hatred for our oline.. our pass protection has been wonderful.. and I really dont want to risk damaging our passing attack by making sweeping changes to the line.

I think maybe one new lineman to try and improve our running game would be understandable.. but our offense was great this season and ya know...if it aint broke..

Thats why I think we need to look at improving our runningbacks over improving our line. If we can get just a little more production out of our running game by drafting/signing a stud...then I think that is the route to take.

I think the O-line hatred comes from watching Chris Meyers get slapped around by Kris Jenkins in wk 1. We need a C who is not going to get buttraped into oblivion if he has to face a DT that weighs more than 300 lbs.

This team severely lacks consistency still...just by looking at the huge streaks of wins and losses we piled on this year. I'm extremely glad we're winners now, but it's time to take that next step, and think we will be able to do so next year. This team is still very young, and another year could only do them good. We were oh so close and it makes me really despise the Colts for giving the Jets a free ride, and i hope the jets beat down both the bengals and colts now, because karma is a b*tch. In the end, it was our own problems that cost us playoffs, like fumbles and kicks and all of that, and now we have to fix those and we could soon become elite.

I'm not intending to disrespect Arian Foster, and I hope he turns out to be the answer, but I recall some late season excitement in the past about guys like Vernand Morency and that undrafted FA practice squad guy we kept for a few years (can't remember his name atm).

I'm very lost at the moment. I was excited from 3-7:30 PM or so, in a state of euphoria I rarely experience. Then the Bengals crushed a little boy's dream.

All I can say now is...what's next? It feels completely different than any other season.

I suppose all I can do now is wait for Cushing to get the DROY award.

You're thinking of Chris Taylor.

I have to say, I like Foster. He's shown more than Morency ever did, he's shown to me there's an upside to him, something I don't see in Moats.

That said, I want a new center. At the very least make Bruce Matthews a player/coach.

I wouldn't mess with the O-line too much; just get a center. I'm OK with getting a RB, but I want a ball-hawking FS a LOT more. We might need a CB and I'd be looking at very large NTs. We might need a LB (just kidding....really).

Next year, we bust the *()^ door in! :fans:

edit: uh, we might need a kicker too, unless our offense is going to continue to play better in the red zone when he sux.

Matt Schaub is the biggest reason for the "pass protection". We've been very good at it since the day he first stepped behind center. He doesn't hold on to the ball very long and he gets the ball out. Our line isn't dominant at pass protection though and Schaub still does get hit alot, we can afford to upgrade the entire interior of the Oline. (we shouldn't bank on C. Pitts coming back from his knee injury at his age)

I agree with Carr Bombed and a couple others. Along with DB, interior Oline should be a priority. I think DB (FS and or CB), Int Oline and DT are the biggest concerns right now. Although, I reckon we'll still look at a mid-round RB. I think Slaton turns out to be what he was initially drafted as, a 3rd down back.

Oh yeah, don't say Myers sucks too loud. You'll get a bombarded by his supporters. LOL
