A list of Kubiak's mistakes.

wagonhed

Team Gruden
Obviously the hot topic this season has been Kubiak's job.

I was wondering if we could perhaps compile a list of all of the mistakes he has made this season. Maybe it seems pointless to some people, and that's fine. If we had a list of all the mistakes he made this year, we could consider all sorts of things, like how many of those we expect him to correct, how many a new coach could correct quickly, and how many of them he has failed to and probably will continue to fail to correct. We can also take a look at some of the other head coaches and see if they make the same kind of mistakes, and how often.

This thread isn't designed just to make Kubiak look bad. All coaches make mistakes. It's true that many of us, including myself, feel that he has made way too many mistakes, but maybe that will turn out to be untrue if we look at the big picture. Everyone likes to point to the players and say "they are playing, they are the ones making the mistakes", because we can see Slaton fumble, or DR miss a tackle. But I would argue that Kubiak himself has made many, many important mistakes, that are not attributable to the players.

Here are some off the top of my head:

- not addressing SS in the offseason
- starting Chris Myers all year
- not interviewing DC candidates
- consistently failing to properly utilize Jacoby Jones
- barely playing JJ at WR
- giving Chris Brown carries all year
- ignoring Moats after he proved himself as the best RB on the roster
- not playing Caldwell early
- not playing Casey early
- never getting the ball to Dreessen after OD went down
- almost never targetting AJ in the end zone
- almost never trusting the pass in the red zone
- sticking with a failed "run to set up the pass" scheme
- refusing to properly utilize our high power passing offense

I know there were some huge mistakes in individual games, mostly with playcalling, some clock management stuff, but I have a terrible time remembering things so other people should list the specific stuff they remember.

Another thread?

Think all of these has been beat to death in the other Kubiak threads - several times over.

Here are some off the top of my head:

- not addressing SS in the offseason Rick Smith
- starting Chris Myers all year Who else was he supposed to start?
- not interviewing DC candidates It appears Bush really was the best candidate.
- consistently failing to properly utilize Jacoby Jones elaborate.
- barely playing JJ at WR Jones is on the field 25-30% of all passing plays.
- giving Chris Brown carries all year True, but he's always trusted vets more in important moments.
- ignoring Moats after he proved himself as the best RB on the roster Ignored Moats?
- not playing Caldwell early He hasn't exactly made a great case for why he should be out there.
- not playing Casey early What has Casey done to win playing time over OD and Dreesen?
- never getting the ball to Dreessen after OD went down 20 receptions is slightly more than "never"
- almost never targetting AJ in the end zone srsly?
- almost never trusting the pass in the red zone srsly?
- sticking with a failed "run to set up the pass" scheme srsly?
- refusing to properly utilize our high power passing offense srsly?

Srsly?

Bush? The best candidate? hahahahahhahahaha
It is on Kubiak that Myers is even on the team. Dude sucks, period.
It is on Kubiak that Chris Brown was on the team. He even said that Chris Brown was a good back and effective back and that they didn't need to add another running back because they had their guy already in Chris Brown. Dude sucks, period.
It is on Kubiak that Moats didn't get utilized more than Brown and Slaton. Brown should have been cut the day after his fumble against Arizona. If you aren't helping the team, why are you here? All he has done all year is hurt the team, yet he still has a roster spot. Just ridiculous and an indictment of Kubiak's good ole boy persona and methodology.

Is Rick Smith partly to blame? Sure, but Smith is part of Kubiak. Kubiak has the final say because Gary got him the job in the first place.

Personally, I have more of a problem with Gary's gametime decisions/adjustments than any of these mistakes, but there is plenty of blame to go around...from the players, to the coaches, to the owner who tries to nickel and dime his way through Free Agency and Coaching.

Kubiak is what he is. A losing head coach.

I'm wondering if their is a 12-step program to cure this issue I've been having here of late... my total agreement with everything SH posts...omg! :)

This is getting ridiculous, and out and out stupid (and yes, if the shoe fits...).

If you want Kubiak gone, you're going to look at everything through those glasses, and all your doing is "self pleasuring" by starting up stupid threads like this.

If you want Kubiak to stay, everything he does can either be characterized as good, unimportant, or not his fault.

I'm sorry, but this is a subject that no matter how you feel, it's perpetuation just makes me have an even lower viewpoint than I already do in regard to the intellect of the average soaper/sunshine brigade member.

I somewhat agree. These threads are getting really tiresome. The arguments go round and round and round.

Yawn

Sorry dude, but I think it's just a bit disengenuous to start a thread titled "A list of Kubiak's mistakes" then say "this isn't meant to make him look bad."

Clearly, that's the point of this thread.

Agreed. Enough already.
rep your way.

As an aside I just want to hear a Soaper's thought, and I won't reply so say all the inflammatory stuff you want:

Do you think that if Kubiak was fired he would land a HC job anywhere?

This is exactly how I feel, and the underlying reason why I don't even bother to post much anymore. If you don't have colored bar of soap in your avatar, then your a ****ing homer. It's just ridiculous.

no. and he wouldn't have gotten an NFL HC gig from anyone if we hadn't hired him in the first place. he had a shot at College Station a few times, but no one was looking to hire him....

....but we had to hire the local 'hero'. now everyone hold hands and be Houston Proud.

screw Kubiak. 4 years has proven nothing except he is a flatlining loser coach that can't motivate his team

I do think he would get a Head Coaching job somewhere. I don't think he's a great coach, but hes not a bad one either. I would say that he's an average coach.

I'm not for or against firing him, I understand that whatever happens after the year is meant to try and get the team to the ultimate goal.. which is a Super bowl..

I think Kubiak needs to go but I have to say he probably would get another HC job somewhere else.

Look at Wade.

Bush? The best candidate? hahahahahhahahaha

Who do you think we should have gotten?

Williams and Gray were the only 4-3 coaches people were seriously talking about that ended up being available. McDermott and Morris were promoted.

Williams has the Saints defense ranked 24, and Gray couldn't even get a coordinator job.

So yes, Bush was the best candidate available.

It is on Kubiak that Myers is even on the team. Dude sucks, period.

Myers is a quality backup, but he shouldn't be starting. He's out there because the Texans haven't been able to bring in anyone better.

It is on Kubiak that Chris Brown was on the team. He even said that Chris Brown was a good back and effective back and that they didn't need to add another running back because they had their guy already in Chris Brown. Dude sucks, period.

Maybe you missed where I agreed on Brown? Wash the pink soap out of your eye so you can actually read.

It is on Kubiak that Moats didn't get utilized more than Brown and Slaton. Brown should have been cut the day after his fumble against Arizona. If you aren't helping the team, why are you here? Moats has had 2 or 3 decent games, and one of them was against Buffalol. He's had twice as many bad games, and cost us a win in Indy with his fumble.

Is Rick Smith partly to blame? Sure, but Smith is part of Kubiak. Kubiak has the final say because Gary got him the job in the first place.

Source?

Yes, TFA.....I made it up a few years back, lol.

I don't hate those with a differing opinion, but I don't think this is a two way street... can we agree to disagree without me having to be labeled as stupid? :)

LOL. I like the way you think. I agree that the "Houston boy comes home" thing was lame and overplayed. And it's STILL being overplayed.

I disagree, though, about him not getting another job. If we fire him at 3:00 pm, he'll have a job offer by 3:01.

My opinion is that he would get another HC job before the beginning of the 2010 season.

No freakin' way. A OC job, certainly. But, no team could sell Gary Kubiak has a head coach that could turn his franchise into a winner. Maybe if Kubiak could have success as an OC again (like winning a Super Bowl), then sure. But, Kubiak doesn't have the personality of a head coach. Fiery guys get chance after chance. Milquetoast coaches have to win.

Get over things already this subject is very old and absured already. It's like a debte over the hottest lady in the world or the most hansome man in the world. Another debate that never ends and I am tierd of it. If you think Gary should be let go like I do then fine but we got the freaking point and the very first thread that was started and none of us have foregotten or will foregett by thread number 1,000. It really won't make a difference really folks we all get it our reading skills and our understanding skills are good well at leat mine are I see it and I get it there isn't really any reason to post it for a 1,000 times over when really the fact is by thread number 1,000 most of us toon this crap out anyway. We shall debate this untill we're blue in the face but none of us have a hand in wether not Gary stays so what is the difference there isn't any and we're NOT all stupid idiots for stating our own personal thoughts either and I'm sick and tierd of that too well maybe we are on this board that is the way it has been for quite awhile now and so the drama continues.

Pretty much how I feel. I think he'll have to do another stint as a OC. If he had an overall winning record or led his team to the playoffs he'd get another shot fairly soon.

I'm also pretty sure that is the major underlying issue with many.

I guess if you insist that is really is the underlying issue keep lying to yourself.

However, I really suspect it wouldn't matter if he was a Aggie, Horned Frog, Longhorn, Clemson Tiger, Fighting Irish or Buckeye his record would still be the same and those who want a change would still feel the same.

I'm also pretty sure that is the major underlying issue with many.
I don't think that's close to true. There were some VY fan boys who were upset with Kubiak passing on his Vinceness. But, most of those posters have been weeded out (or weeded themselves out). Many of those disappointed with the teams progress under Kubiak began his tenure as ardent supporters.

As for myself, I was pro-Kubiak until midpoint 2008. I was willing to overlook his gameday brain freezes the first couple of seasons as a coordinator learning to become a head coach. They've never gone away. Kubiak doesn't understand what it takes to get a team up every game, or what it takes to win a tight game, or to get his team to overachieve. But if he comes back next season, I hold no animosity towards him. If the team again is mired in mediocrity, all of my hostility will be towards Bob McNair.

A lot of people, if they are being honest, were ready to fire Kubiak during the MNF game and then during the losses of divisional games afterward.

But beating up on helpless teams cures a lot of people's heartaches, as does knowing that he's going to be back next year. Few people want to process, in their mind, what it means to have him back next year.

Once the bleeding of losing that streak of divisional games stopped, and we started beating up on helpless teams, it gave Kubiak breathing room.

I'll watch Gary Kubiak with the attitude of indifference and slight annoyance that's reserved for a guy who can't beat his divisional opponents and cannot win enough games to secure even a Wild Card spot on our own with no mathematical help needed.

It was that very Monday Night Football game that forced me to look
INSIDE Gary's record. We CONSISTENTLY beat up on the weak teams,
both AFC AND NFC, and CONSISTENTLY lose to the cream of the crop
of the AFC. I compiled our record against the top teams in the AFC over
the last four years, and it's downright scary. Check this out:

Colts: 1-7
Chargers: 0-1
Ravens: 0-1
Titans: 2-6
Patriots: 0-1
Steelers: 0-1
Total Record vs. Cream of the AFC: 3-17

This is what we KNOW about Kubiak. Is it good enough?

I have a feeling that for many here, Kubiak's biggest mistake was attending A&M. :stirpot:

I don't think so. I dislike the mediocrity for it's own sake. There's no reason to make up excuses to explain those who want to move on beyond that. These theories that the "soapers" want Kubiak gone because they are angry or because he went to A&M are gross generalizations that only apply to few if any posters. I think they are made up so the "soapers" can be portrayed as emotional and illogical.

Well guys, I blow the anti-aggie theory out of the water. Class of '81 WHOOP! I think the world of Gary as a man, and I believe he's one heck of an OC, but imo GP hits the nail on the head for me. I stated prior to the MNF game that it was the key game. Win it, and we roll, lose it, and we crumble. That prediction has held true. I believe he's not taken this team over the hump, and is incapable of doing so. I'd also add, IF, and that's IF we have the opportunity to bring in a head coach with the credentials of Bill Cowher, we'd be fools not to pursue that avenue. I was also one of David Carr's biggest supporters on these boards. I've seen the error of my ways, staying the course sometimes isn't the answer.

lucky, you hit the nail on the head.

kubiak doesn't have a chance at hell at another HC job. he got the job because he was cheap and from houston.

how could a team sell this coach to their fans?

why is it that when someone posts something you agree with, they hit the "nail on the head", when actually all they did was hit your own personal nail on the head?

just sayin'...:kitten:

BTW, this is not directed at SH...just an observation and one I have been guilty of as well.

Man, this board is full of assholes.

I'm sorry if you guys think this thread is boring or has been done before... I wonder why there is an entire page of you posting to complain about it then? I have less than a hundred posts here so, no, to me, this isn't a worn out topic, and we've got a long time with nothing to do until next season. If you want to talk about something else.... be my guest, in another thread. No reason to stick around and show your ass in a thread that doesn't concern you.

Also, thanks for all the personal attacks and insults. Much appreciated, guys. Are we sure this is a TEAM message board?

I dont see any personal attacks nor insults ....

Best thing you coulda done was join in on one of the several threads that touch this subject - I wish they would just make an "all emcompassing fire Gary thread" - You know we have one of those for HWWNBM (that would be the old #8) and a few other topics that got beat to death.

Dont make a fresh thread if its not a fresh idea. :headhurts:

It's not as if I haven't looked at many of the fire Kubiak threads. This isn't a fire Kubiak thread. It's a thread to look at his specific mistakes and determine if they are things that most other coaches reasonably make, instead of just randomly blurting out how bad he is and how he can't win. If you know of a thread that actually attempts to look at his job this year objectively, please provide me a link to that because I don't see it.

If people aren't interested in talking about it, that's fine with me... go post in another thread then.

There is no looking at Kubiak "objectively" anymore.

Almost every thread here, regardless of the original topic, now gets hijacked by someone ranting about Kubiak again and again and again.

The first personal attack I've seen in this thread is when you called everyone assholes.

Mistake #1: 4 year old Gary climbs onto kitchen cabinet and steals cookie from jar.

I'll let you guys fill in the rest...
