Yearly Steals

Rookie
The Texans have gotten at least one 3rd Round or later steal per year. These are our most known steals listed by how good they've been for US:

1.Domanick Davis 4th rd pick 4 in 2003
2.Antwan Peek 3rd rd pick 3 in 2003
3.DeMarcus Faggins 6th rd pick 1 in 2002
4.Glenn Earl 4th rd pick 26 in 2004
5.Dave Ragone 3rd rd pick 24 in 2003

This year I think we had a really good draft and there's one player who I think could carry on the Texans tradition as criminals. Could Jerome Mathis be our steal this year? If so how good do you think he could be? and How long until he shines?

I think Vernard Morency will be the steal of the draft because if he could pressure Dominick Davis for his starting spot. Once Dominick Davis gets 30 carries in one game and can't get over 100 yards (which won't take too long) I think Vernard could be the new starter unless Dominick Davis can prove that he can become a more durable running back.

Faggins wasn't really a steal. More a product of the Texans coaching and Petey's will to become a NFL player.

I think you can say the same about Peek or Ragone...if & when they're able to prove their worth over the course of a season.

It's too early to call Earl a steal. Although you can at least say the Texans got good value for a 4th round pick. Glenn needs another year to really establish himself.

Davis was a 1000+ yard rusher his 1st 2 years in the league. No 2nd day pick has accomplished that since Terrell Davis in '95-'96. That's a steal.

I think the Texans picked up some guys on the 2nd day of the draft they can develop over the next couple of years. But I don't see any of these guys bursting on the scene, or even making the starting lineup.

Peek and Ragone are far from being steals. Ragone is still the 3rd team QB.
Peek as a third round pick is expected to be a contributor to the team. If anything Peak is in his put up or shut year with the Texans needing to prove that he is a starting calibur player in the NFL.

Faggins is a good value pick, but steal is too strong for me...Honestly, good teams find Faggins types every year. A second day pick who becomes a soild reserve.

Earl is a wait and see. If he becomes an above average starter then steal works...if he mediocore then no.

DomDavis I will take as a steal. He has a solid starting NFL RB when he was drafted to be a third down back/KR.

Of the 2nd day guys, that are under the radar for the Texans in his very limited time I like Charlie Anderson the best as emerging as a possible starter. In the 5-10 non-special teams plays I paid attention to him on, his passing rushing skill looked on par with what I have seen with Peek and if Special teams are any indication he is probably a more disciplined players.

The only guy I really consider a steal is DD out of that list. If the 2003 draft were reheld today, he would be a late first to at worst mid second rounder imo. Peek is not a starter YET, and in the 3rd that is not steal territory. Eerl could be a steal, but it's way to soon to know. Ragone is a 3rd stringer. I don't know too many 3rd string steals. Faggins is the only other guy who might qualify...but it's not as if he stormed the league as a rookie, and even today, wouldn't start for most teams. He has certainly proven out to be a good to excellent value in round 6, I guess steal is a bit too strong for me...but I do think you could make the case. NO WAY on Ragone, Earl, and Peek.

As to Mathis, I hope he is a steal, but it's way, way, way to early to know.

I think Faggins qualifies as a steal. He is good enough to start for many NFL teams.. he is VERY solid and is more than just a backup.. he is a high quality backup that COULD START if we needed him to.

That is quite a steal to get in the 6th round.

DD is also a steal.

Peek.. at this point.. is not a steal.. Neither is Earl.. but both have the chance to become a steal if they continue to improve like they have.

I think that Pettway, and Mathis could both end up being steals.. we will have to see. I am not yet sold on Morency, or Brown... and Hodgdon may end up being a steal.. but you rarely see Olinemen that are dominant enough to be considered a steal as a second day pick.. especially not Centers.

As for 1st round picks.. they can be steals too ya know? Dunta.. if he continues to play at the level he did in 2004, could be the steal of the draft. And if Travis Johnson becomes a dominant Dlineman.. he could be considered a steal too.

davis has produced back to back 1000 yard seasons. how do you figure a rookie is gonna come in and take his starting position that fast and how do you figure he'll do so much better than davis? anyways davis is a double threat, over the ground and threw the air i just cant see morency coming in and taking it that easy. IMO

Ya know who I'm glad we did not steal is?
Sean Taylor & Kellen Winslow.
It would've been called a "steal" if Casserly and Crew would've had a shot @ either of them given that one of them would've fell down to us. I don't know if we'd take Winslow but I'm almost positive we would have taken Taylor.
Heck, alot of us were wanting DeAngelo Hall (Atl. CB) instead of Robinson. He had a faster 40 time (barely) and he could also return kicks. We got lucky on that too cuz Hall missed most of the season with some injury of some sort.

How's that for luck???!!! :whew

Anderson has real potential. I especially liked it when he cahsed a colts wide reciever down from behind when the other guy was all out sprinting to daylight.

You know which pick is better than that? Andre Johnson over Charles Rogers. Has Charles Rogers even played in six games in the past two years?

Yep, a sixth round pick (Henson) turned 3rd then traded along with a 2nd. I agree.

Huge steal for us and by week 10 everyone in the league will know it. With P-Buc and D-Rob at the corners every QB in the NFL will be sweating.

With those guys' speed, hopefully they'll make Manning sweat by sacking his @#&% 3-4 times a game/disrupting and giving Coleman and Petey a couple of token INT's.

Rogers was chosen before AJ, we never had a shot at rogers. thanks detroit for picking rogers and making the Texans job alot easier though.
