Bobby Bowden steps down

We love you Bobby. Having said that, I am glad someone grew a pair of nuts and told you to step down.

New era of FSU football is ahead. I hear we will probably be moving to a 3-4 next year no matter who the DC is. We are better suited for it and all the candidates have experience running it.

Look for HUGE changes on the staff in the coming weeks. Rumors are that many of the coaches will be let go and replaced. Mickey Andrews already stepped down, and Jimbo will be moving from OC to head coach. New DC, New OC, and alot of new assistants.

Bobby Bowden steps down.

More like "Bobby Bowden gets shoved to the ground like a dirty hobo asking for change" by the organization he helped make into a powerhouse.

I would never want to see this happen to Mack. Just not the way a storybook coach is supposed to go out.

I was never a fan of Free Shoes University, but Bobby Bowden I respected in much the same way I respect Joe Paterno.

Good luck Coach Bowden. Enjoy all your future endeavors.

True but Bobby just doesn't have it anymore and it's obvious.

It really does suck that he was forced out but the writing has been on the wall for a few years now. The last time Florida St was in a meaningful bowl game was the Orange Bowl five years ago and they didn't even deserve that invite.

Bowden is a coaching icon but he should know better than anyone else that his time is up. I understand that he loves the game and wants to keep coaching but at this point it is selfish of him to stay. As sad as it is, the program will be better off now that he has moved on.

I hear ya. And agree that they will be better because of it. But I think the way it was handled out in the open is what makes it seem so bad.

Behind closed doors, talk about it, and let Bowden look like he is going out on his terms. I know it is party Bowdens fault it got out, but it should have been discussed long ago.

Personally I am glad he is not going to be a puppet like Paterno. Dude doesnt do anything!!!

Totally agree with that point.

I think the reason the school let it get out in the open is because they knew that Bobby wouldn't want to coach if everyone knew he was just a figurehead.

The school wanted him gone but they wanted to do it without straight up telling him that.

I would. It's a job just like anything else and it revolves around the results that you create due to your circumstances. If you want to coach at a big time program that "expects" to have a lot of success every year and you're getting paid big bucks, then you are required to have a lot of success for the majority of the years you are there in a sport like college football. No coach should be able to have their job forever because of successes they had in separate decades from a long time ago. Bowden's teams have been on the down slide for many years now and it will only get worse most likely. Nothing wrong with what FSu did, and if Mack were to continue to have poor seasons like this where the program would regress a lot, then I'd hope that he would lose his job to. These guys get paid big bucks to be successful and they are not children. They are grown men who are paid to do a job just like any other person at their job.

Bobby will be paid $1 - $2.5 million just as a retirement package. He made over $2 million this year.

People stopped coming to the football games. Ticket sales have plummeted. Notable big time boosters have stated that they won't donate any more money until Bobby is gone. One booster said he would pay for the entire indoor practice facility, but won't put a dime down until Bobby is gone. These are boosters who have been donating for many years. They've had it.

Eventually, no matter your past, you have to live up to expectations. The expectations at Florida State are to be a contender, and we haven't been in 8 years. They gave him more than enough time to get it together, but he was stubborn about changing his staff (your staff is extremely important when you don't actually do any of the coaching). The talent is there, nobody can use the excuse that FSU just doesn't have the talent.

People (not anyone on this board) always say look at Joe Pa. Do your research people. Joe Pa was pressured and hired new assistants to get it done, to keep pace with the evolution of the game. And guess what, Penn State has evolved. Bobby was pressured to change his staff, but was too stubborn to do so.

I'm appreciative of what Bobby Bowden has done for FSU, but like 90% of the Seminole nation I don't want to go to games where the team is poorly coached year after year.

They tried to do it behind closed doors. Bowden was just stubborn about it. He said he wanted to stay and make all the staff decisions.

That's the reason he is stepping down, because they won't let him make more meaningless staff decisions. They told him he could stay on as a figure-head and have no input on who is chosen to replace Mickey Andrews or replace any other coaches Jimbo fired and he declined. Bobby wanted to choose his own defensive coordinator. A DC that would only coach for 1 year. Pointless.

Bowden's final game will be the Gator Bowl, against West Virginia, the first Division 1A team he coached for. awesome way to send him out.

Agreed. Too bad they had to bend the rules to allow it. Now a more deserving ACC team gets to go to a lesser bowl game.

I was and never will be a big FSU fan, but I always liked Bobby Bowden. Always respected him.

Even more respect after, even though being forced to, he stepping down with grace. I think it's great he's trying to get the fans to rally around Fisher and wants to move out of Tallahassee to not have his shadow stretching over the field.
