I'm watching the game on TV now.

At the game, I saw Antonio put his hands on Peyton to force that Brian Cushing INT, & put Peyton on his ass.

Then the roughing the passer call, that came later.... I know we got 15 yards and an automatic 1st down. But he got his hands on Peyton again.

I like that. I'll take that roughing the passer on Peyton 3 or 4 times a game. If you want to get Peyton out of his game.....

That's what it takes.

Antonio had a great game yesterday.

Smith has 3 critical personal fouls in the last two games amongst other non 15 yard penalties. All of this happened when it counted most and he has had some trouble with penalties pretty much all year. I like his anger and intensity but he seems like a higher paid Antwan Peek to me. Peek would make plays too but he would also blow it and cost the team when it counted.

That being said, Smith has outplayed Mario since about Week 2 and he does seem to care about winning and has some pride. He could be part of the solution and doesn't look to be part of the problem. He just needs to channel it better and he needs to realize that the Colts are the darlings of the NFL. Those guys get every call and will continue to get the calls until the day Peyton retires. He seems like less of a Weaver then he did earlier in the season but now he is coming off a little Peekish. Dude needs to get his mind right without losing the mean streak.

It's also quite obvious that Kubiak's teams aren't getting much benefit of the doubt from NFL refs. Is that because he is so stoic and non-confrontational? Would they get more calls if they knew Kubiak was gonna be in their face calling them out? Players got to be smarter especially against teams like the Colts. They get every call coming to them and then some that are made up and its not gonna change anytime soon.

That'll get Payton out of his rhythm. :sarcasm:

I did like that Smith was finally getting some pressure on the QB though.

Finally? He has been getting hits and pressures all season long but the only thing people care about is sacks. At one point, Mario and Smith were #1 and #2 on pressures.

Other then pulling a Bud Adams or mooning the refs what is he supposed to do? He has cussed at the refs, walked onto the field, etc. umpteen times this season. This is the kind of thing that just chaps me. Criticize Kubiak for something legitimate like not snapping the ball after the Moats fumble, fine. But perpetuating a stoic myth, no. Dude paces the sideline, talks and yells at the refs all the time. Did you see how far onto the field he was after the phantom Reeves PI on Sunday?

Antonio Smith has been a different player the past few games... really has stepped his game up

I keep hearing scouts think he's an even better player as a 3-4 defensive end... know any coaches who run this defense?

I got a feeling there might be some good HCs available who run the 3-4...

Half the time I when I look to the sidelines Kubiak isn't even watching the game. He couldn't even watch the field goal attempt against the titans.. He always seems disconnected during the game, and especially after it during his press conference.

That's just ignorant BS. Kubiak watches and comments constantly on the sideline. He has a well known and long standing trait of turning his back on crucial plays. That isn't indifference.

Schaub got hit in face and no call. Yes the Smith contact in Mannings face was a penalty, but of course no call on #8.

It may not be indifference but good lord. can't watch the critical plays? I've pointed out to people in the stands how he doesn't watch the play sometimes. How the hell can you make smart decisions about what is going on if you can't friggin' watch the play live? It's not like he can rewind. The only way you know to exploit this guy or that guy is to watch. This doesn't strike you as a childish behavior trait that gives him less information than it would if he just watched the friggin play? It's like watching a little girl put her hand over her face during a scary movie.

On the thread topic, I lost respect for Smith last week, but if he can play angry I can deal with not playing like Anthony Weaver (his play early in the year).

How dare you interject fact (on both points).... What the heck is the matter with you?? Let's not interfere with the perpetuation of these myths. :truck:

I don't think that is on the head coach. Home teams get the calls when they have a rabid fanbase that puts fear into the hearts of the refs. For example, I reference the "Immaculate Deception" of Pittsburgh Steeler fame. The referees let that play stand as a TD because they were afraid that the Steelers fans would actually do them bodily harm. So, you see the impetus is on the fans.

They showed on TV Sunday how he ignored Kris Brown's first kick and then seemed to be asking about it in the headphones.....the one that barely went over the top of the upright.

Seems like it's the opposite problem that we had with Capers. He was too focused on the big picture (to the point that he started micro-managing the offense.)

Kubiak's too focused on the offense to the point that he neglects the big picture.

I agree, he has been a pretty good player for us. Very disruptive and a force. QUite frankly any time we get a hit with a free agency i am happy with it. its clear he is no anthony weaver

The only times I have noted him not watching the game when it isn't clear he is doing something else like looking at the play list, looking at photos, etc. is on the end of game/potential game winning plays. I think that is odd but doesn't affect anything and doesn't reflect indifference. Also his sideline demeanor was well known prior to him being hired. This just has the feel of finding something to grouse about to me.

Yep, if you can't sack 'em cost your team 15 yards. Just curious, how many roughing the passer calls has Mario had in last two years? Maybe if he would just go for the head, he might turn into a good player. :shades:

As crazy as that sounds, that might be just what this team needs on defense for us to start getting sacks. I mean you gotta start making that QB throw earlier than he wants to. Sometimes letting them know you are there can do just that. It also puts fear in the OC to make certain blocking assignments to prevent you from hurting their QB. This sound familiar?

WOW I can only imagine. 3 or 4 Roughing the Passer penalties and other few on Dunta for Pass interference, and a few false starts at home...And Colts having rookie corners and no Freeney. We probably lose the game again.

You mean Mario Williams? The most over rated player in the NFL?

Yeah, I said it. Name me a more over rated player.

Before anyone goes there, Reggie does more for his offense than Mario does for our defense.

And though I was never on the VY bandwagon, it appears he is overcoming his problems and is helping his offense more than Mario is helping our defense.

Mario gets handled one on one by journeymen linemen. Line him up on the left or right, same result.

Or is he playing hurt again? Turf toe? Shoulder? Pinky? :shades:

Wanna see where he fits in sack wise.

Behind all these:

Elvis Dumervil, DE w/14 sacks
Jared Allen, DE
James Harrison, LB
Will Smith, DE
Dwight Freeney, DE
Robert Mathis, DE
Trent Cole, DE
Andre Carter, DE
Antwan Odom, DE
DeMarcus Ware, LB
Julius Peppers, DE
Joey Porter LB
Darnell Dockett, DT
Brian Orakpo, DE
Ray Edwards, DE
Jason Taylor, LB
Aaron Schobel, DE
Kevin Williams, DT
Jarret Johnson, LB
Randy Starks, DT
Shaun Phillips, LB
Lawrence Timmons,LB
LaMarr Woodley, LB
Leonard Little, DE
Stylez White, DE
Jimmy Wilkerson, DE
Kamerion Wimbley, LB w/ 5.5 sacks

Mario is ranked #28 with 12 others @ 5.0

That was a ridiculous call in the first place. It was incedental contact, and shouldn't have been called a penalty. It was obvious that there was no intent to injure the QB.

Sure the guy isn't having a great season but I think this is a little overboard. He has 31 sacks over the last 3 seasons and still has several games left this year to improve on that number.

Also, it's not like he's getting a whole lot of help. His 5 sacks account for 33% of the teams sacks, which is good for 30th in the league.

Overboard? Maybe.

But from the beginning we have made "needs help" excuses for this team.

Carr needed "help". Get a good O line.
Our DBs needed "help" from our D line. Put some pressure / get sacks on the QB.
AJ needed "help" from another WR on the team.
We need a good running back to "help" take pressure off of our passing game.
Someone / something is always needing "help".

We've been needing "help" since year one.

The supposed leader of your D having only 5 sacks over half way through the season and being 30th in the league is what I was referring to. He is being over rated.

There are very few players on this team I wouldn't trade and MR isn't one of them.

:coffee:

he did have 30 yards of penalties on those 2 plays your talking about.

The first penalty didn't have anything to do with Manning. After Cush intercepted the ball, Antonio knocked Dallas Clark on his rump away from the play. That was a stupid penalty, the kind we don't need. The hit on Manning was clean & led directly to the pick.

The second penalty Smith was fighting through a block, & wouldn't quit. He swatted at the ball, missed & hit Manning in the face mask. This is the kind of penalty we can accept. It's a judgement call that is usually not called, but it let's Manning know we're coming and we aren't going to stop till we get him.

We don't need Antonio Smith pulling his punches, when he didn't do anything wrong.

:um: I thought 'Meco was the leader.

While I don't use injuries as an excuse, it is clearly affecting MW's play. If you can't see it, you're not looking.

Vinny and I were Kubiak-watching during the game, and the HC is usually standing with the trainers 20-30 yards away from the LOS. He very rarely intereacts with the players, and this is troubling to me when you see the overwhelming majority of HCs getting involved with in-game strategy and adjustments. He never said a thing to his offense when they turned the ball over, but instead just fiddles with his headset and stares at his Denny's menu.

This is his M.O., though, and has been for all the years that I've watched him. He is like the anti-Belicheck, not watching the play, not involved with motivating players during the game, not getting in their faces when they make game-changing mistakes, and certainly not working with them when they are resting on the benches like so many other NFL HCs do. It is becoming clearer and clearer to me that he's best suited for the booth and calling in plays as an OC from above.

(This is actually more in response to cupacoffee)

Forget the injury.
Here are some numbers (even though PFF is not official, they're not too bad about these particular numbers):

http://www.profootballfocus.com/by_position.php?tab=by_position&season=2009&pos=DE3&stype=r&runpass=&teamid=-1&numsnaps=25&numgames=1

Counting 10 games only (they don't have the update on the 11th game yet).

Robert Mathis 9 sacks, 10 QB Hits, 25 QB Hurries
Trent Cole - 10, 11, 22
Freeney - 10, 10, 32
Ray Edwards - 7, 17, 24
Mario - 5, 13, 24
Allen - 10, 8, 19
Will Smith - 8, 7, 17
Carter - 10, 14, 18
Peppers - 7, 5, 13

Odom was having a fine year until he got injured.
The others were OLBs and DTs that shouldn't be compared.
But if you want to, then check them out for yourself.

Mario is having a comparable year as last year.
Fewer sacks but more QB Hits and Hurries.

I don't think sacks alone can measure the worth of a DE.
You can add to these, the number of tackles, SFTY, PB/PD, FF to have a clearer picture.
Mario is right up there among the 5-7 best DEs in the league.

I expect Mario fans to support his play.

But when watching the game I will often key on Mario when the camera angle lets me, and all too often I see him handled, easily.

I didn't say he wasn't any good, I said he was over rated. (opinion)

I take it you disagree.

Well, I broke down every single play (again, not to boast, only to say that I have done the observations and have no need to be a fan of any player.)
Our D-line is doing a much better job pressuring the QBs this year than last.
And Mario is still devastating as ever.
All the QBs have to pay attention to him.
(And we have played against many QBs who are the hardest to get down in the league.)
His pass rush is about the same, but he has improved quite a bit on his run-stopping efforts.

I have noticed, as I'm sure many of you have, that Mario continues to run himself well out of plays on passing downs. I've seen him use the same move time and time again where he tries to get the edge using his speed but the QB simply takes a step forward and Mario ends up 5 yards behind him.

Is this what the coaching staff wants him to do? I find it hard to believe that he wouldn't fix this problem if the staff was pointing it out to him. On the other hand I can't think of any legitimate reason for the DC wanting him in that position.

Or, is he simply falling back into his comfort zone (speed) and doesn't like to use bull rushes or spins? Maybe the shoulder injury is limiting his strength so all he has to fall back on is his speed?

Whoever this falls on needs to do something to fix the problem.

Out of curiosity, what made you lose respect? After he elbowed Mawae?

I think he was referring to "The Peoples Elbow" to Mawae's rib cage. Ordinarily I would agree with Vinny on that kind of play. However, given who was on the recieving end of "The Peoples Elbow", I wish Smith would've put more on it.

I don't think he got enough credit today especially the forced fumble at the end zone where pollard got the TD. Great game! Without that one move, we could've lost the game. So Thank you Antonio Smith!:bravo:
