As far as playing QB goes, Vick was never really that good.
But he could do so many things with the ball in his hands that as an overall player, I don't think there is any way you could call him a bust.

Stafford is the real friggin deal. Let this kid have his typical poor rookie season for a QB and next year he'll take off. The Lions have a pretty good foundation considering Delmas is a possible pro bowler and until Pettigrew had season ending surgery he was having himself a season. Throw in Calvin Johnson and Ernie Sims and they have something to build on. They had a draft similar to the Texans 06 draft, some big hits that'll carry them for years.

I won't doubt Matthew Stafford's ability to play and his toughness but his rookie season is horrible compared to what Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco did (but then again its the Lions afterall). I'm going to judge him closely next season and see if he makes significant improvements before I start calling him a bust.
As for the Lions, they have a few building blocks but nothing impressive. They NEED to build there defense fast but they also have to get a legit OT to block for Stafford and to open up running lanes for there talented RB Kevin Smith.

You honestly can not compare Stafford's rookie year to Flacco's or Ryan's. Neither Atlanta nor Baltimore was 0-16 teams the year before and had more than a decent team for those two to operate. I personally think if you put Stafford to one of those teams, he performs just as well if not better.

Great arm. Surprising athleticism and mobility. Very competitive. Intelligent. Showed some toughness and leadership. Texas high school football product.
He seems like a guy that could take a step forward if he can eliminate the stupid throws in the years to come. Success as a Lion is going to be tough to come by. However, he could help himself by providing Detroit with something they have lacked since Bobby Layne. A quality QB. Think about all the bad QBs they have had. It's pretty pathetic. Stafford looks like a cant miss prospect compared to some of the Detroit alternatives the last few decades. They are still players away but they have some pieces to the puzzle and Schwartz looks to be a pretty good motivator and has the players believing in what they are doing.

The longer the Lions go without a decent QB, the less harsh I am on Andre Ware. Detroit seems to be way more at fault over the years than the QBs. I'm not sure how that is, but you don't go through 20-30 different bad QBs without doing something wrong. Maybe they're using Chicago's model of QB coaching or something.
I watched the last drive engineered by Stafford against Cleveland on NFLN with aidio from Stafford who was obvioulsy mic'd for the game - I was impressed with how cool he seemed to be and how he directed the team thru the situation. Him getting up off the turf to come back in after that brutal hit in a meaningless game showed his toughness and competitive nature.
"They called a time out ? - I can go back in. Let me the <insert expletive> up. I can throw the ball. I can throw the ball ...."
That was a pretty special moment ..... Even if it is the Lions and they are 2-9.
Its not really realistic to compare his situation with the Lions to those of Flacco and Ryan's .... those teams are light years better than the Lionsand Football is the ultimate team sport.
