Seahawks LB Aaron Curry demoted

According to the Seattle Times, the Seahawks have removed rookie linebacker and first-round pick Aaron Curry from their nickel defensive package.

Curry has struggled this season, averaging just five tackles per game, and has not made the impression the Seahawks had hoped when they drafted him.

In other news, Cushing wakes up in the morning and pi$$es excellence. How fortunate to get a player so much better 11 picks later and about 15 million in signing bonus money cheaper.

Seems Mora is trying to inspire him to become a great player by benching him. Sounds like a self-defeating exercise.

49 tackles, 2 sacks, 5 tackles for loss including sacks, 2 forced fumbles, and 3 passes defensed isn't exactly struggling. He's already had to pick up the slack on a poor defense that lost Lofa Tatupu for the season.

That Seahawks team is poorly coached and I expect Mora to be fired or on a burning hot seat at year end.

That's not to say that Curry is keeping pace with Cushing but considering what he is working with, Curry isn't doing a bad job.

You make a good point. Would Brian Cushing be that good without Demeco? Seems as if Cushing gets to roam around freely because Demeco. Only thing is you can also say the same for Demeco.

What?! Who has DeMeco had since 2006? He roamed back there on his own. I'm having a hard time grasping the idea that Morlon Greenwood helped DeMeco Ryans. A real hard time.

No doubt that Cushing and Ryans both help each other out immensely but I'd have no qualms about either one succeeding just fine without the other.

I don't think the Seahawks drafted this kid to play on only 1st and 2nd down... Its a regression that organization didn't expect when they made him the 4th pick and gave him 25 million guaranteed.

What they wanted is what Cushing is for us.

And Lofa Tatupa may be out for the year but LeRoy Hill is no slouch.. Seattle has a very solid deep linebacking core and could've been that much better if Aaron Curry was making progress.

he's a rook...some guys take longer than others. Mario wasn't very good his first year.

I thought he was playing really well this season though. With Taputu out, you'd think the Seahawks would want Curry to get as much playing time as possible. I know a demotion doesn't necessarily mean he'll play much less. I'm really confused by this move regardless.

LBs generally hit the season running don't they? By that I mean there isn't as long of a break in period as for a DE, is there? I've heard three years for a DE to come into full force but a LB usually gets it going right off the bat.

What do you think is wrong here, Vinny? Is it Curry or is it Mora?

He's hit the proverbial rookie wall most likely. Some guys hit it, some don't. He's a 250 pounder so they are taking him out of packages where he is in a lot of coverages. I've seen him play and he covers backs like Antwaan Peek...to me he doesn't have the hips to cover like top cover backers. They need to put his hand down during nick packages and rush him off the edge predominately in nickle packages until he can cover better...if he will ever be a good coverage linebacker at all. He has the speed, but lots of guys who are great athletes don't turn and run well in coverage.

So if I understand you correctly... he's probably better suited to be a tweener? Is that the correct word here?

nah, didn't say that really, just said I'd keep a guy like this on the field, but I wouldn't put him in coverage with backs or with pass catching TE's right now. :)

Mario was injured most of his rookie season, remember the thing with his inflammed arches ? He played but didn't even practice it was so bad.
But our LBs are quick learners since DeMeco was immediately outstanding and Cushing is happily the same in his rookie year and apparently the Seahawk backer is not of the same precocious mold.
