Came across a site that ranks our guys' line:

O-Line Rankings.

Here's the Texans write up:

Starters: Wand, Pitts, McKinney, Wiegert, Wade
Reserves: Riley, Brown, Washington, Weary, Jones

Comments: This line does an excellent job of run blocking, but their pass protection is among the worst in the league. David Carr was sacked more than anyone else in the league last year (49 times), and the Texans are never going to make that next step unless they can give Carr time to find Andre Johnson on a regular basis. Weary could step into a starting role this year and may provide more athletic ability than what Wiegert has to offer.

Grade: B-

Are we really gonna be that bad protecting Carr again this season? :crying:
 
I agree with the assessment.

Looks like I'm not the only one that thinks our pass-protection needs to improve before we make any more ground on the playoffs.

Except for Riley being a backup at LT, he'd set the record for false starts at LT. I'd put him as a third stringer at RG at best.
 
Somethings never change. Gone for a week and another O-line thread comes up. The line will be fine.

They had 3 new players on the line last year if you count the position flip for Pitts and a new scheme. Don't worry about it.
 
hmmm........you have a point there, but, then again.

isn't it all how you look at it ?

usually new blocking schemes take awhile to adjust too, which may slow us down ? And playing musical chairs on the line, doesn't usually assist in the gelling that everyone seems to be counting on..........so therefore I worry.


Seriously though, I hope your right about this one and all the little changes help in a BIG way.

Don't think there is anyone on the Texans or any Texan fan that doesn't think the pass-protection needs to improve. The disagreement is how to achieve improvement--throwing any FA or rookie into the lurch vs. continuity, new schemes, new playcalling and careful exploration of FA's.

Nope, I've seen different objective observers think the same thing...

Offensive Line

Projected Starters: C-Steve McKinney, G-Chester Pitts, G-Fred Weary, T-Seth Wand, T-Todd Wade
Key Backups: G Zach Wiegert, C/G Todd Washington, G Milford Brown, T Victor Riley, C Drew Hodgdon [r]

The Texans offensive line is progressing nicely and could be considered a top-twelve unit by this season's end. Great size, good run blocking ability and youthful enthusiasm abound within this unit. This group will never be excellent in pass protection, but they should be able to open gaping holes for RB Domanick Davis and the running game to exploit. Guard Chester Pitts has great size and has started every game for the club over the last few seasons. He has made giant strides in each of those three years. He is a premier drive blocker who can knock defenders back with consistency.

I am not sure what you are talking about, but I don't contribute to that site and didn't write that.
 
injurys / inexperience / lack of quality depth / age all factored into the collapse at the end of the season of the once hopeful to be a good line Texans. by addition only one quality prospect through the draft leaves the Texans one short of a full deck :um: hence the continued effort to aquire without overspending for the missing card. could it be Victor Riley? could the Texans be a player in the Verba sweepstakes?

I'd bet a beer that this seasons offensive line will be better than the last three :party:

Sure it will be better. I bet David Duval will be better next year also. Of course it's pretty easy to improve on a 78 stroke average.

Our sack total is going to go down quite a bit because of short passes. Carr's going to be chunking it pretty quick this year. If our guys can't block for at least two seconds then we really have problems.

I think that the o line isn't as bad as people make it out to be. Based on size alone they should be a good run blocking team. Another question I have is why were people willing to get Pitts time to get better at LT and not give Wand the same amount of time? I mean if he doesn't work out this year I sure Casserly will draft someone like Ferguson, Scott or Winston. And if that does happen does anyone think that Wand could be Wiegert's replacement at RG?
 
I credit the Texans management with using due diligence in pursuing a quality LT. They just could not land one that is worth what the player is asking. I say to everyone be patient. Two things will happen this year to help DC gets sacked less. Shorter drops and more blocking. If we don't win games this way, then we will be able to either draft or land a FA next year. I just think you have to belive the Texans will get adequate pass protection at some point.
