The Kyle Shanahan to HC **rumors** have begun

just wanted a little discussion from the SP here about coach Mike Shanahan.

As discussed by my GB Scott Hastings today on FM 104.3 the Fan, the CU Buffs could be looking for a new coach after the end of the season.

From what Scott has heard, the Buffs could be interested in Kyle Shanahan as head coach. Of course, Kyle is the OC for the Houston Texans (working under former Shanny disciple Gary Kubiak).

The real kicker is that the Buffs could want a father/son deal here, like the one that Tennessee got with the Kiffins.

This was posted by a moderator and employee of footballguys.com, so it holds a bit more weight than your typical football forum rumor, but it is conjecture nonetheless.

That said, given the connections here I think there is a bit of substance to the rumor. And, if this happened, I can imagine the CU/Texans pipeline will begin flooding.

I don't think the OC affects our offense, given that the offense is really Kubiak's and the OC position has been a revolving door since he's been here. I also think that it is unlikely Mike chooses to be a coordinator in the NCAA when he'll likely get HC offers in the NFL, but I do think it's interesting that Kyle's already be bandied about as a potential HC.
 
hmm, dad working as OC under his son? Doubt it

Theres going to be a team that takes a chance on Mike, no need to put his son in charge
 
If the Bills did this, I would consider it one of the biggest mistakes in a long time, and that team has made a few really big ones! :)
 
Maybe could have bought it if the "Dad" element wasn't thrown in. Mike isn't going to go from "desired NFL head coach candidate" to "college OC."
 
I would think Mike Shanahan would like to return to coaching in the NFL. With the productivity of the Texans offense, it seems likely that little Shanny could become a HC in the NFL at some point in the near future as well, especially with the success that Josh McDaniels is (or was) having with the Broncos this season. Of course he came from the Patriots while we're still the Texans.
 
This move doesn't make sense for either Shanahan.

Mike is going to land somewhere in the NFL next season.

Kyle is already at the Pro Level and I think he sticks this out to try and parlay it into a head coaching job in the NFL. Or, he loves being an o-coord and wants to stick with that and resist the allure of being a head coach.

It's been said by quite a few former NFL head coaches that being a head coach is a real grind. Kyle is in a good spot to have witnessed that with his dad being a HC for so long, and especially now that he's an o-coord under Kubiak.

I see this as the Buffs trying to lure the two guys to their program, since its in Colorado, and with the attraction of working together as a dad-son team.

IMO, this has little chance to become a substantive deal that those two guys would consider.

Agreed. The fact that Colorado is interested in Kyle Shanahan is substantiated, though the idea that Mike would work with him in a Kiffin-arrangement is simple conjecture on Cecil Lammey's part.

Agreed, don't see either guy going college now. Either could be a NFL head coach, why give up that; especially Kyle who has yet to be the guy at the highest level?

One of my favorite things about watching NFL Classic Games, is when you see the sideline, and notice all the assistance coaches and see if you recongize any of them as current coaches. Good organizations breed good coaches, but hopefully we can keep Kyle.

For the love of all things holy, please dont bring back Joe Pendry .

The difference here, is that Monte was never a successful Head Coach.

Mike Shanahan is not an offensive coordinator, he is a head coach, with a proven track record.

Taking a job as a college OC (we're talking about the Colorado Buffalos, not the Buffalo Bills) is a big, big step back.

Lane Kiffen going from a psuedo NFL head coach to Tennessee was more of a lateral move, and Monte going to work with his son, when he was talking about retiring anyway... isn't even close to "the same thing".
 
Don't forget, when Kyle broke into the NFL his first job was in Tampa Bay with Gruden. He took that job purposefully avoiding Denver because he did not want to work with his father, he wanted to be his own coach. He wanted to be thought of independently of Mike and not just a puppet/extension of the man (who could blame him? remember Mike Shula?). It sure doesn't sound like he wants to coach with his father any time soon.

Who knows!
Bill Walsh stepped away after 3 SB rings and went back to Stanford (for a couple of years I think), so anything is possible.

If Shanahan Sr. and his wife like to live in the Colorado area, they surely can do that.

Remember last year's preseason game when Denver came to Houston?

Some news outlet in Houston interviewed Kyle because it was rumored that Mike came over to Kyle's house after the game (we won).

I think the question asked of Kyle was "What did you guys talk about after the game, at your house?"

I think Kyle's answer was "He wanted to get some pointers from me."

Now, I know this is a cute media sound-bite answer that Kyle gave, but in all fairness...I think Kyle really does want to distance himself a bit from his dad.

I think Mike Shanahan ends up in Dallas. Wade runs a pretty lossey-goosey ship from what it appears, and Mike Shanahan is going to sharpen those guys up a notch or two with his hard-nosed manner of leadership. That's where I think Mike Shanahan ends up.
 
I agree a long shot........ BUT

They could stay in Shanamansion as they call it - their 20,000 ft2 house in Colorado AND Bolen would have to pay his salary next year. He only has to forfeit it if Shanny lands another NFL coaching gig. Sticking it to Bolen might be enough to tip the balance in CU's direction. :bubble:

I'm calling Washington. I think thats where he goes. Snyder wants someone to go in there and fix the offense and he'll pay him anything he wants.

I'm not so sure Wade gets fired in Dallas. I think it would take a pretty substantial step backwards to get himself canned. And if he was fired I think Jason Garrett would be the next guy to get a shot in Dallas.

Just my opinion.
 
As for the difference between the Kiffins and Shanahans...one dad has been a SB winning HC in the NFL..coordinator to coordinator is a different story

Buffalo is already pushing hard for Shanahan. But, I think he ends up with Da Bears, if Lovie Smith gets the ax.

One, Shanahan has his pet QB (Jay Cutler) on the team. Two, he's a Chicago native. Three, it's a winnable division. Would Baby Shanny follow him? It's possible. Would Kyle take a college HC gig? It's possible. It wouldn't really surprise me if Kyle Shanahan moves on after the season.

Yeah, but Shanahan wants personel control. Snyder isn't gonna give that up. It's a hard team to rebuild with all the crazy money he has given out.

I agree. If Lovie Smith gets cut, then Mike Shanahan is the Bears first choice.

Kyle has a good thing going right now. I don't see him becoming a Head coach just yet, but I can see him being a head coach at a big time college.

I agree with Kyle being the head coach at CU in Boulder. He played for UT, was raised in Colorado, and he would be the third Texan OC to turn college head coach under Kubes. (Calhoun to Air Force, Sherman to A&M)

i assume we could entice him to keep his job here, but I doubt we would. It would be pretty futile. Gary will have to call more plays and bring in someone else who can continue some of the progress we have seen offensively during the Kubiak era. Gary knows how to put together an offense but he is just a poor motivator and poor decision maker in-game.

While I would prefer to keep Kyle, this may be the thing we need to shake up our offense and get rid of this stupid zone blocking scheme; it's outdated.

While we are great between the 20s, we suck in the red zone. I believe this is due to our weak running game & line play. I'd like to see us bring in some beefcakes, fire off and blow some people off the ball.:twocents:
 
Chris Mortensen on ESPN radio has stated several times on good sources that Mike Shanahan to Washington is all but a done deal.

Could be some interesting things going on if suddenly an opening is available in Chicago and Houston.

Mike will end up in DC working under Allen and Jones is a horrible GM. Parcells is the reason the Cowboys have most of the talent they do right now .
 
If Kyle wants to leave...BYE. Our offense has been more erratic and inconsistent since we've been aware of him calling most of the plays.
