Good job by Okoye occupying two defenders at the nose.
Good job by A. Smith setting one edge.
This left Ryans, as well was Diles, unblocked.

A quick screen pass to Davis, who took a peek and saw #59 coming.
He cowardly dropped the ball, LOL!

Diles was in on the blitz but didn't do anything except occupying the Center.
(A. Smith dropped back).
Zgonina beat his man and got to Hill in under 2 secs.

3-16-SF 19 (1:00) (Shotgun) S.Hill pass short right to M.Crabtree to SF 23 for 4 yards (G.Quin).
Quick swing pass to the right flat for Crabtree.
Great job by Quin avoiding his blocker.
Ryans was also there along with Wilson.

When you do the second half, I'm very interested in your take on Deljuan Robinson. I'm still baffled why he doesn't get in the game more. From my perspective, he's our best DT, still.
 
Nice breakdown. Look forward to the rest, especially something that may explain why mostly an ineffective 4 man rush chosen while still getting burned by pass on coverage.

I think it's because Zgonina has been playing well of late.
(And to think many of us, including myself, thought he should retire, LOL!
Even though I knew I wouldn't be surprised if he just kept chucking along.
He still looks like a young man in TC.)

And Cody seems to be able to occupy the double team.
I don't think it's due to Deljuan's playing poorly, just that he didn't excel enough to get more snaps.

I'll try to do the 2nd half tomorrow.
(Even though I basically had it all down in my head already!)

Not much we can do here.

2-4-SF 26 (10:03) F.Gore left guard to SF 24 for -2 yards (M.Williams).
Good job by our NT (Cody or Zgonina?) holding up the double team at the POA.
Mario set the edge tightly.
A.Smith was unblocked and pursued from the back side, chasing Gore into Mario.

3-6-SF 24 (9:17) (Shotgun) PENALTY on SF-C.Rachal, False Start, 5 yards, enforced at SF 24 - No Play.

3-11-SF 19 (8:50) (Shotgun) S.Hill pass deep right to M.Crabtree pushed ob at SF 37 for 18 yards (J.Reeves) [A.Okoye].
Reeves got beat by an inside-outside move by Crabtree.
Okoye stunted all the way from LDT around the RG and got to Hill around the 2-1/2 sec mark.
QB Hit just after Hill got rid of the ball.

Wild cat. D-line held up well. Gore's momentum was just too strong.

Texans blitzed 5.
Hill found the hot receiver TE Walker.
Good read by Pollard, good tackle.

Texans brought 7 to the LOS and blitzed 6.

Questionable call.
Dunta was looking at the ball the whole time.

1-10-HST 46 (2:21) J.Morgan left end to HST 40 for 6 yards (B.Pollard).
Reverse. Finally, they saw the defense.
We've been sending one DE (usually A. Smith slanting in right behind the LOS toward the middle for the last few games.)
This time it was Bulman. And the DE is always vulnerable against the reverse.
Somebody, like a safety or a CB, needs to be ready to fill the alley.
In this case, it was Pollard who flew up there,
yet Morgan still gained 6 yards.
It would have been a first down with Barber in there, IMO.

Two-Minute Warning
2-4-HST 40 (2:00) (Shotgun) S.Hill pass incomplete short right to M.Crabtree.
We blitzed 5 but never got close. The passing lane was wide open.
Luckily, Hill's pass was just wide.
Quin gave Crabtree all kind of cushion.

3-4-HST 40 (1:54) (Shotgun) S.Hill scrambles up the middle to HST 38 for 2 yards (C.Barwin).
Timeout #2 by SF at 01:36.
We blitzed 6.
Hill saw it and took off in about 1 sec.
Good job by Barwin to get off the LT and came back for the tackle.
This is the athletic ability and hip flexibility Barwin possesses.
Looks like a first down there to be had.
A first down would have put them in FG range!

4-2-HST 38 (1:36) (Shotgun) S.Hill pass incomplete short middle to I.Bruce (B.Cushing) [S.Cody].
We rushed only 4.
Cody looped around from RDT to the other side A gap, and had Hill wrapped up by the ankle.
He also brushed Hill's arm but wasn't able to pull it down.
Hill threw the ball desperately just before his knees hit the ground...
Straight at Cushing... who may have been a little surprised.
That could have been six.

It just look like MANY of the Texans players took some naps here and there in the second half. None of the 3 units played as well as in the first half.
And it has nothing to do with Alex. (I don't think Shaun Hill played poorly either).
 
I haven't watched my DVR of the game yet, but the PI call on Dunta appeared obvious at the time and the replay. Dunta was basically holding on to Bruce in order to keep up with him.

He threw an arm bar when he turned to find the ball. It's a common DB tactic and one they get away with roughly 50/50. It just wasn't D-Robs turn.

Or, it was so obvious the referees couldn't help but throw the flag?

IIRC, wasn't there multiple flags thrown at him? I was calling it a PI before they even threw the flags it was so obvious.

Oh well, it didn't seem to hurt us at the time anyway.

I don't remember any flags being thrown until IB signaled that he wanted one after the play was over.

It came from the guy in the end zone who was not in position to see it.

The side judge who ran after the play was in best position to see it.
He signaled an incomplete pass without hesitation.

Dunta never touched Isaac Bruce.
His left arm was down by his side.
His right arm never touched IB anywhere.
His body never touched IB anywhere.
It was a great play by Dunta.

Lousy call!

Seriously!
If anything, Isaac is a veteran himself.
He made a willie veteran good move stepping inside and in front of Dunta.
Dunta was slowing down just a tad to time his jump.
Bruce knew he had no chance on the ball.
He can only bait the officials or Dunta for a PI call.
 
2nd HALF

K.Brown kicks 73 yards from HST 30 to SF -3. M.Robinson to SF 37 for 40 yards (J.Dreessen).

There was a guy #44 FB Norris (I believe) who shoved Barwin squarely in the back
on the 22yd line, right in front of the returner.
And NO CALL! GRRRRR!

San Francisco 49ers at 15:00, (1st play from scrimmage 14:49)

1-10-SF 37 (14:49) F.Gore right end to SF 35 for -2 yards (Du.Robinson).

Our front four from L to R (94, 91, 95, 90)
ZBS run weak side right.

94 slanted thru the RT, past the FB, forcing Gore to go wider right.
91 got ahead of the RG (all of our linemen went past the LOS) who went for the cut block as last resort and missed (or was shoved to the ground by his own man, either the C or the LG).
Okoye then combined with 59 to form a pair of plyers clamping from either side of the FB.
Gore was forced to turn back to his left.
It was a great cut (our front 7 now has all pursued to the left.)
Mario turned back quickly along with Pollard, they wouldn't let Gore turn upfield.
Gore tried to went wide left, but Dunta was right there for a 2yd TFL.

2-12-SF 35 (14:06) A.Smith pass short middle to M.Crabtree to HST 48 for 17 yards (E.Wilson).
Niners in straight I, TE strong left, slot right, split right.
Our front from L to R (90, 95, 91, 94) plus Cush strong side outside TE.

We blitzed 5 but didn't get there; the pass was off around the 2-1/2 sec mark.
Niners max-protect then release the RB at the last moment.
95 was able to push the C back some.
94 stunted around to the middle from RDE with the RG picking him up.
Cody used this action to shove the C to the ground, 6yd behind LOS, not quite far enough.

We dropped back into a 3-deep zone with the seam wide-open.
An easy 17-yd reception for Crabtree.

1-10-HST 48 (14:06) PENALTY on HST-S.Cody, Encroachment, 5 yards, enforced at HST 48 - No Play.


1-5-HST 43 (13:07) F.Gore left guard to HST 43 for no gain (S.Cody, B.Cushing).
Niners in straight I, TE strong R, slot left, split left.
Our front from L to R (93, 91, 95, 90) plus Cush strong side (our left) outside TE.

ZBS run weak side left.
93 Bulman was shoved to the ground by the TE a couple of yards on our side.
56 Cush pursued unblocked from the back side and joined in the tackle.
91 took on the combo block RT & RG
95 split the combo block C & LG and pushed the C into the running lane, 3 yd behind LOS
90 set the edge.
54 took on the leading FB right at the LOS and POA
95 slid over to make the tackle on Gore just behind the LOS, 56 joined him shortly.

Cody redeemed himself from the off-side infraction.

2-5-HST 43 (12:27) F.Gore left end to HST 34 for 9 yards (B.Cushing).
Niners in offset I left, TE strong R, slot left, split left.
Our front from L to R (93, 91, 95, 90) plus Cush strong side (our left) outside TE - Same as last play.
I.Bruce motioned from split keft to split right.

ZBS stretch run left.
Once again, 95 had advantage, pushing the C into the running lane.
LG pulled to the outside.
RT fired out and neutralized Diles 7yds beyond LOS.
RG fired out and neutralized Ryans at same level. Come on, guys!
Mario jumped over the FB's cut block, forcing Gore wide left, around the pulling LG.
Dunta came up and took a shot at Gore 2yd beyond the LOS but just missed.

31 got past the slot receiver (who might have gotten away with a hold).
Too bad, 93 pursued from the back side and kicked him in the heel,
forcing Pollard to loose balance temporarily.
He could have prevented the first down.

Cushing had to shift thru all the trash to get there to make the tackle.
54 & 59 had slowed Gore down enough by then.

1-10-HST 34 (11:40) A.Smith scrambles up the middle to HST 34 for no gain (D.Ryans).
PENALTY on HST-T.Bulman, Defensive Offside, 5 yards, enforced at HST 34 - No Play.

SF-V.Davis was injured during the play. His return is Probable.
Penalty on HST-Deljuan.Robinson, Defensive Offside, declined.

Deljuan came in and promptly committed off-side, LOL!

Niners in single back, double TE left, 2 receivers split wides on either side.

Our front 4 from L to R (90, 66, 92, 94) plus Diles weak side (our right).
Cushing at SAM, Demeco at WILL.
Quin at LCB, Dunta at RCB.
Pollard played up, almost as a 3rd LB.

Our D-formation was a 5-man blitz (with Diles), 5 middle zones and Wilson as lone safety.
Then our CBs would drop into a 3-deep zone (together with Wilson)
- from the shuffle so they can still see the play.

One receiver ran a go route (on Dunta);
the other (on Quin) a 5yd quick stop - he would be wide-open for a first down as a hot receiver since Quin had dropped deep.

The outside TE 46 Walker ran a go route, crossing Cushing on the inside.
Cush should have chucked him within the 5yd limit and followed him.
He did neither, forcing Wilson to get up on Walker, and therefore a tad late in coming back for help.

The inside TE (Davis) ran a corner route, heading toward the weak side pylon.
He past Demeco across the face (on Ryans' right).
Demeco might be thinking of a slant route, and was a little late in his turn.
That's all Davis needed.
Vernon Davis is very fast.
He ran a 4.38 at the combine in 06 (the fastest ever for a TE).
He's faster than many of our receivers!

Pollard was in a tough position.
He had to drop into his outside zone, guarding the outside receiver from a first down.
He also had to watch for the RB to see whether he would release.
If only Ryans had given Davis a chuck, Pollard would have had a little more time to turn around and help.

Dunta delivered a blow to Davis in his left rib (too bad, the ball is in the other arm),
then he slid to tackle the right ankle, stretching Davis almost into a split position.
(Davis was down for a while afterward.)

This slowed down Davis' momentum more than Wilson anticipated.
(I believe 99.99% of the safeties would see the same way.)
Wilson just missed Davis by just a little.
And he was going after the ball as well.
Nothing worked out! Including up front.

Diles got past the RB and would have gotten there in just a hair under 2-1/2 sec.
He was right there! If only Demeco had given Davis a chuck!
Or Cushing had given Walker a chuck and followed him!
Or if the RB was able to hold off Diles,
Pollard wouldn't have to worry about him releasing and could have concentrated solely on Davis.

Mario was slowed down just a hair due to the presence of the TE,
but he needed to be better than being taken out wide by the RT like that.
Deljuan couldn't do anything against the RG either.
92 & 94 pushed the combo blocks of the other 3 linemen.

Charged this one on Demeco.
But Cush failed his assignment even worse.
(He was looking at his man the whole way, but did not cover Walker, jogger, crawler, nor anybody for that matter!)
He took away Demeco's help (Wilson).

ZBS run weak side left. They sure like to run weak side, don't they?
Okoye got a little penetration in the strong side B gap.
94 penetrated weak side C gap past the TE.
These action cut off the back side lane for Gore.

Mario set the edge on the LT
92 held off the combo block C & LG
This allowed 54 to meet the FB at the LOS but the FB won.
But at least we minimized their gain.

2-7-SF 15 (7:14) F.Gore left end pushed ob at SF 16 for 1 yard (J.Reeves).
Niners in straight I, double TE left, single wide right.
ZBS stretch run left.
Our front four from L to R (94, 92, 91, 90)
plus Cush between 91 & 90 and 35 outside the formation strong side.
Demeco came up the middle as the ball was snapped.
Diles on weak side.
We had 7 men on the line.
91 & 90 penetrated and forced Gore wide right for Reeves.
Pollard was also there for support.

3-6-SF 16 (7:14) (Shotgun) PENALTY on SF-A.Smith, Delay of Game, 5 yards, enforced at SF 16 - No Play.

Straight man coverage from a 5-2 zone look. (Probably better for us!?!)

We covered tight, Smith delivered the ball around the 2-1/2 sec mark.

90 stunted inside 94.
91 worked past the double team C & LG to the same side (strong side).

It's 2-1/2 sec, but still Alex had to get rid of the ball due to pressure coming.

Smith penetrated to the inside;
Alex stepped up to the outside (ya' hear that Schaub?) with Gore releasing up that side.
Smith had a hand on Alex.
Schaub would have been a dead duck, not because of his immobility, but due to his indecisiveness!
Good job by 95 & 91.
Too bad, the momentum sent Alex to the other side.
Broken play, OK, Alex has something over Shaun Hill!

We continue to dominate the LOS;
However...
59 just missed a tackle behind the LOS
94 overpursued a little back to the inside.
56 seems to have lost some of his intensity.
It took 4 guys to bring down Gore.

Wild cat. Gore squeezed thru the tinest of a hole.

PENALTY on SF-J.Morgan, Illegal Motion, 5 yards, enforced at HST 44 - No Play.
Crabtree kept on abusing Reeves, but Reeves' stats ain't hurt by this penalty, LOL!

1-15-HST 49 (1:07) A.Smith pass short left to V.Davis to HST 41 for 8 yards (B.Cushing). HST-T.Bulman was
injured during the play.
Our front four from L to R (90, 92, 66, 93?)

Too much time for Alex.
The pass went off in 2-1/2 sec but nobody was near him.
90, 66, and 93 was in one-on-one.
93 was working on the LT when the RB went out and blew him to the ground.
To add insult to injury, 93 was declared injured during the play, LOL!
(He just got his wind knock down by Gore.)

Texans in base 4-3, Cover 2.
Soft zone again!
I really think our LBs are better off in man coverage with help from the safeties.

6-man blitz against 6 and a 1/2 blocker (one RB chip blocked and released quickly.)
Pass off in just under 2 secs. Nobody was near.
Reeves never saw the ball. (No, he wasn't beaten by much - small consolation;
he just didn't know where the ball was or where the play would be headed to; he had no clue!)

1-10-HST 34 (14:17) F.Gore up the middle to HST 31 for 3 yards (S.Cody, Du.Robinson).

Actually, it was a ZBS run right.
Cody shed the double team and wouldn't let go of Gore's foot.

They tried a screen pass, but both Okoye and Smith were too quick.
Smith batted the ball down toward the side line.

Texans showed man coverage from nickel;
with 56 following the TE Davis in motion to just inside the slot receiver.
We brought Ryans up the middle and showed blitz.
And we did blitz, but never got there.
Morgan (in the slot) just shoved off Quin on an inside slant pattern.
The middle was wide open with Cushing following Davis deep.
They had our number!
We'd have been better off having Ryans showing blitz but dropping back.
Or having a DE, in this case, probably Mario, backpedaling from the weak side.
The QB might not see that as he was locked onto his strong-side receivers.

Niners in single back, double TE right, Crabtree slot left, Morgan split left.

We showed a 5-2 zones that (supposedly) would drop back into a 3-deep zones, 4 short zones.

Morgan went in motion to outside slot receiver and continued to run an inside slant.
The slot man ran a go route.
The inside TE (Davis) ran a corner-post route (faked to the pylon and went back toward the goal post.)
The outside TE ran a quick out and up route along the sideline (forward, out, and then up).

From our right to left in the short zones,
Diles was on the slot receiver and stayed in his zone as the slot man ran a go route.
He let his man go to Dunta & Wilson, which was normal.
Diles also had to watch for the RB, so I guess he was OK.

Demeco was in the middle right zone and had to follow Morgan on the inside slant.

Cushing was in the middle left zone and should have followed the inside TE Davis.
Instead, he let Davis go, and who knows what the rookie was trying to do next, LOL!
(Perhaps, he was thinking he can go help Quin!)

Quin was in the outside left zone on the outside TE and followed his assignment.
Except for the way he ran his coverage which might induce Cushing into thinking he might get beat.

In our deep zones:
Dunta was on the outside of Morgan and dropped into cover 3.
Wilson was in the middle deep zone, and he should have shaded more toward his left (the middle, where the action was to happen.)
Pollard covered the other side and faced another tough choice as to whom he should support.
As soon as Cushing released Davis, Pollard had to cover the outside to keep an eye on both TEs; either one can run toward the corner.

But Davis cut back inside.
And he was too fast for Pollard just as Fitz was in the previous game.
Wilson would have been of better help if he had stretched his zone more toward the middle.
(Most likely he wouldn't be able to help, but at least he would be in better position.)

Quin would be better off covering his man tight.
He has speed and he can hook the QB and look for an INT.
But he needs to work with the safety and the guy in his next zone (Cushing) as not to leave any doubt that "I" need any help.

Cushing is a rookie and needs to keep with his main assignment first and foremost.
Stay with the man stretching your zone deep, especially when he is the fastest guy on the other team.

Pollard, sorry you were in a tough position again;
but just get up to the dead spot in between the 3 zones, that's your best chance.

Diles, take matter into your own hand.
When you know there are two guys behind you and you don't have to worry about the deep receiver anyway,
stretch your zone to back up the next guy (Demeco) as the inside receiver encroaches his zone.
In this case you know he's gonna stretch left to follow the slot; cover his back by dropping deeper.
It's more important to guard a TD than to watch for a RB,
especially when you can see that he was ready to stay and help blocking Mario.
You and Wilson and Dunta can all converge in case of an unlikely last second dump-off.

Frankie, shouldn't there be a contingency plan here (some coaching points)
to have Dunta and Diles on the outside guy
so that Wilson can slide in and help on the other receivers?
I don't know a lot of Xs and Os but I can see some bad football there!

IIRC, wasn't there multiple flags thrown at him? I was calling it a PI before they even threw the flags it was so obvious.

Oh well, it didn't seem to hurt us at the time anyway.

Yea, I was callin PI before they threw the flag also. We were at the sports bar, and I remember turning to an Eagle fan friend of mine and told him to watch. He agreed it was PI.

You simply cannot see it in instant replay.

You have to put in super slo-mo to see that Dunta never touched Isaac Bruce.
And that Bruce clearly stepped in front of Dunta trying to get a call.

Not that it matters!
But to watch a great play turn into a pass interference call is a shame!

1-10-SF 27 (7:09) A.Smith pass incomplete short right to M.Robinson.

Niners in offset-I right, TE left, slot right, split right.
Our front from L to R (90, 95, 91, 94) plus Diles on the weak side,
reading the FB, but eventually dropping back into a 4-3 zone.

Niners faked a reverse to the wide-out.
Mario quickly penetrated inside the RT and went past the blocking RB Gore (just past 1 sec).
Alex stepped to the right out of the pocket.
Cody worked the double team RG & C
As the RG turned to help on Mario, Cody quickly followed and advanced deep into the pocket.Alex wanted to set his feet to throw, but Cody bore down on him in a flash.
He had a hand on the QB 10yd deep behind the LOS and wide outside the pocket just before 3 secs.
Alex barely escaped and threw the ball out of bound.
Again, Alex is more mobile/quicker/faster than Shaun Hill and Schaub.
Could have been a sack there, if ya' know what I mean.

It's a good thing what Mario and Cody did.
The FB (actually #24 Robinson is a 223-lb RB who lined up as FB on this play) had released on an out and go route down the side line and had Diles beaten by a couple of miles.

Our LCB #35 had dropped back into cover 3 together with our two safeties.
All 3 of them were chasing the slot receiver who ran a deep post route.

What great coverage we had!
And the bad play would continue as the coaching staff declared
this "suckiness" is still better than our nickel or dime package :)

2-10-SF 27 (7:02) (Shotgun) A.Smith pass short right to J.Morgan pushed ob at SF 39 for 12 yards (J.Reeves).

Niners in shotgun spread, TE strong right, a slot receiver and a wide-out on either side.
Our front four from L to R (94, 91, 95, 90)
Base 4-3, off-man.
A quick pass to the wide-out Morgan who ran a short 7-yd stop route along the sideline.
Guess how much room Reeves gave him as Morgan got the first down easily.

The TE Davis was also open on an underneath route.

1-10-SF 39 (6:21) PENALTY on SF-J.Morgan, Illegal Substitution, 5 yards, enforced at SF 39 - No Play.

1-15-SF 34 (6:13) A.Smith pass incomplete short left to V.Davis (E.Wilson).

Niners in single back, single wide-out left, 2 TEs Right, 1 TE Left.
Our front from L to R (90, 95, 91, 94)
plus Reeves (?) on the strong side, outside both TEs
and Cushing on the weak side, outside the 3rd TE.
23 played man on the wide-out.
Diles and Demeco in the middle, 2 safeties at normal depth.

We'd be playing man coverage with Dunta on the WR; Reeves folowed one TE; Diles stayed as the 2nd TE stayed to block.
Demeco got beat by Davis again on a quick 7-yd up and out route.
But Wilson would come up quickly and broke up the pass.

Niners had 7 to block 4.
94 took the LT deep, but Alex calmly took one quick step inside and stepped up the pocket
where he had double-team blockings everywhere.
Now, that's what I call "automatic"!
3 secs.

2-15-SF 34 (6:06) (Shotgun) A.Smith pass short middle to V.Davis to SF 43 for 9 yards (D.Ryans, Z.Diles).

Niners in shotgun, single back on Alex' left.
TE strong left, split L, slot right, split R.
Our front from L to R (94, 91, 95, 90) plus Cushing on the weak side.

We blitzed 5 but the pass was off in 1.4 secs.
We were playing man with Wilson as the lone deep safety;
except for Diles & Demeco who had shared responsibilities
depending upon how the TE and RB were to be employed.

By the time Demeco reacted, Davis was already comfortable sitting down on a stop route to take the pass
(run straight about 10 yd, stop, and turn back to get the ball).
The only thing Ryans can do is to tackle Davis.
The pass was a little high so Davis had to jump up for the ball and therefore couldn't advance the ball.
It was more likely that Davis ran the route about a yard short so the ball looked to be high.

Can they have a call so that either Diles or Demeco would stay with the TE if Davis runs toward that LB?
In this case, Diles was on the strong side, and Davis just ran past him.
Diles would go up to take on the RB releasing out to the strong side as the hot receiver.
It took too long for Ryans to get there.
But does it matter? Did Frankie really think that any of our LB can stay with Davis?
(Cushing has good speed but can he make the quick read and decision
as he still works to familiarize himself with all the different offensive sets and schemes?)

3-6-SF 43 (5:19) (Shotgun) A.Smith pass short middle to M.Crabtree to HST 46 for 11 yards (J.Reeves).

Niners in same formation, except the strong side wide-out moved into the slot.
Texans in a rare 3-man front (90, 94, 91)
We showed man but would drop into 3-deep, 3 medium zones.
(Plus Demeco & Quin in on the blitz to make it 11.)

Barwin and Demeco came up to the LOS, but Barwin would drop back into the middle zone along with Cushing and Pollard on either side.
Reeves, Wilson, and Dunta were in the 3 deep zones.
Pollard, Barwin, and Cushing in the short zones.

We blitzed 5 with Demeco and Quin (getting off the slot reveiver) to join the 3 linemen.
The pass went off in about 3 secs with nobody threatening Alex.

91 took the double team LG & LT
The C, RG & RT took 94, 59, and 29 wide to the other side. What a shame!
Mario stunted inside and was taken by the blocking RB to the outside (behind the LT & LG).
A bigger shame!
We were giving Alex a clear passing lane to step up to;
he delivered a straight pass to Crabtree who was right in his line of sight as he stepped up the pocket,
again, "automatically".
Just like the sea opened up itself for Moses, LOL!

Crabtree, the right wide-out, ran a stop route with Reeves doing the shuffle, giving away a little more than the barn.
Almost 5 more yards than needed for the first down.
Reeves was supposed to be able to see the receiver, the QB, and the ball the whole way with this shuffling technique!

1-10-HST 46 (4:35) (Shotgun) A.Smith pass deep middle to J.Morgan to HST 23 for 23 yards (Du.Robinson).

Niners in shotgun, single back on Alex' left.
TE strong right, split R, slot left, split L.
Our front from L to R (94, 95?, 92, 90)

We rushed 4 on 5 and nobody got close as the pass went off in 3 secs.
92 took on the double team.
The Texans showed man then dropped back into a 3-deep zone (4-short zone)
or something it's hard to say (nothing makes sense).

If that was the case (that we played a 3-deep zone), then the slot receiver Morgan just ran straight past Pollard,
past the dead spot in the deep zone (between Wilson and Dunta).
Pollard should have moved to the outside and followed the wide-out, but he didn't.
In fact he was in no-man land.

Diles was also in no-man land; he should have stretched his zone back toward the slot man,
or stepped up in the middle zone to take on the releasing RB.

If they were playing man, then Dunta had to covered both receivers.
At any rate, that was what he had to do.

Our front from L to R (98, 92, 66, 93).
Looks like only 92 remained in this personnel grouping
since he was the only one who didn't show ineptitude on the last play, LOL!

Again, he would take on the double team.
Deljuan slanted inside the weak side A gap;
he didn't get past the LG, but was able to put up a hand in Alex' face around the 2-1/2 sec mark.
Not all that good, but better than nothing.
Barwin at least was able to push the RT 6-7 yd deep, and also had a hand up a little later.
Bulman was a non-factor on the LT.

Among the Texans D, only Zgonina should be allowed to keep his veteran minimum pay check, LOL!

The Niners should have been flagged for playing with only 10 men on the field.
#21 Gore lined up as the left wide-out and never crossed the LOS.
He knew it would be a TD without his involment, LOL!
Cushing was very quick to stretch his zone to defend this "HOT" receiver.

The Texans were in a 2-deep zone (5 short zones)
then seemed to dropped the CBs back into a 4-deep zone along with the safeties.
That didn't help, did it? LOL!

The Niners ran 4 go routes (and a Holiday route for Gore)
with Davis making a slight turn inside after running vertically 10-12 yds
to make it a tight skinny post route.

Both of our LBs Diles & Demeco were easily beaten; Pollard just can't make a decision on whom to help.
It could have been Diles who got the flak from fans had Alex chosen to go to the other TE.

Pollard still needs to be accountable though.
It would make more sense to go directly after the guy who had just caught 2 TDs not that long ago.
You just can't stay in between like that!

But, IMO, I would put this one on the coaches!

Quin had backpedalled too far back.

1-10-SF 16 (1:14) (Shotgun) A.Smith pass incomplete short right to F.Gore.

Same front 4 for us.
Mario walked his man back to the QB in about 2-1/2 secs
Alex wanted to go deep in the middle but we had 4 on 2 coverage;
he stepped up the pocket, scrambled to the outside and simply overthrew the hot receiver Gore out of the backfield.
Crabtree had beaten Reeves easily on the outside earlier but Alex didn't see it.

2-10-SF 16 (1:07) (Shotgun) A.Smith pass deep middle to I.Bruce to SF 38 for 22 yards (B.Pollard).

Same personnel.
Mario went around the RT and almost got to Alex' throw in just after 2-1/2 secs
Okoye and Barwin drew double team (the RB stayed back).
Smith was playing patty cake with the LG.

Reeves lost the wide-out from the get-go, this time to the inside.
Texans were in 2-deep zone.

Alex wanted to go quickly to Isaac Bruce on the outside on Reeves, but the wide-out fell down.
It was unclear whether he tripped on himself or Reeves had accidentally tripped him.
(He was asking for a flag afterward.)

Alex pulled the ball back.
Mario got to his left arm in just before 2 secs and started pulling on it and wouldn't let go.
The QB had to throw the ball away.
Time to go to work for Mario, I guess, LOL!

Okoye and Smith took on double team.
Barwin ran a wide arc around the LT and got to Alex in right about 3 secs, just as he dumped off the ball.

3-10-SF 38 (:50) (Shotgun) A.Smith scrambles left end pushed ob at SF 43 for 5 yards (J.Reeves).

Same personnel.

Barwin got penetration in the B gap and jumped up, forcing Alex to pull the ball back and ran.
Okoye took on the double team.
With Cushing boring down in front and Mario chasing from the back, Alex ran to the side line for 5.
Sorry to say it, but Schaub would have been a great candidate for "dead duck" 3, 4 or 5 times in this series alone.

4-5-SF 43 (:50) (Shotgun) PENALTY on SF-A.Smith, Delay of Game, 5 yards, enforced at SF 43 - No Play.

We replaced Barwin with Bulman.
Okoye took on the double team C & RG.
Mario went around the RT as usual; Alex wanted to step up the pocket.
Smith (at LDT thru-out this series) worked the A gap.
Bulman stunted inside; the RG tried to pick him up.
Bulman might have pushed him into Alex; either way, he forced the errand throw.
Redemptiom time for Bulman, LOL yeah!

Good thing, too!
Reeves got beat right off the bat to the inside by the wide-out Bruce.

That could have been a first down inside our 40 with some 30-33 secs to go.
