Ricky Williams: "Wildcat is dead"

Williams had very interesting comments on the Wildcat:

"The Wildcat is dead," Williams said. "It's evolved. It's different now. It's called our regular offense basically. I don't think it should have a name. When people get in the I-formation it doesn't have a name. It's just the I-formation.

"There's all this talk about the Wildcat basically as a trick play. But we've done it so much. And there's so much on film. You can't call it that any more," Williams said.

Ricky's spot on here, folks. the formation isn't a gimmick anymore than a play-action pass is. it's just part of the Dolphins' offense and it's here to stay. :specnatz: :smiliedance:
 
I dont know if defenses can fully stop it. The dolphins run it so much that they gash defenses for 4 or 5 yards a pop.

If a team uses it as its primary offense like the dolphins and not just as a gimmick it can work and work well.
 
it's simple, but you still have to deal with a great offensive line and two great runningbacks, in addition to the play-action going on.

the '95 Cornhuskers didn't do anything too crazy, either. still destroyed everyone.
 
They need to just rename it. I'll call it the veer-boneski. Kinda the veer, kinda the bone, but not really either. The Shamwow offense has a nice ring to it.
 
So, let's review.

The Wildcat is dead, because it's a huge part of the Dolphins offense.

The I-formation doesn't have a name... except that it's the I-formation.

Is Ricky hitting the bong again?

Also - the Dolphins are 2-3 just like the Texans. Who gives a rat's ass what it's called as long as it works and makes you a winner?

Which it hasn't, to this point.
 
IMO I think as the novelty of the wildcat wears off, it'll just be another formation.

After all, wildcat is pretty much the shotgun, except it comes with a run-oriented playbook that accompanies it.

And remember the Bears with the 46 defence - they said that no offence could doing anything against it.....umm there's a reason why its not seen as often now

yeah, the big difference between the run and shoot or the 46 or anything is those aren't just formations, those are entire playbooks. the wildcat is just a formation.

and it's not a gimmick. a gimmick is some surprise that the other team doesn't expect. EVERYONE knows the wildcat is coming. but, they've had a lot of trouble stopping it. why? because you have Jake Grove, Jake Long, Justin Smiley, Vernon Carey and Donald Thomas throwing you around, and Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams running the ball straight at you. there's very little "trick" to this "gimmick." the majority of the plays are just Ronnie Brown faking the handoff to Ricky Williams and running up the middle.

regardless, i'm not sure why people act so negatively to it. it's a very old school play, and fun as hell to watch.
 
I think the worst thing to happen for the rest of the Dolphins' opponents
was Pennington getting hurt. Chad Henne has a cannon arm, and
that Wildcat formation really wears a defense out over 4 quarters.
It's gonna be interesting to see how the next team the Dolphins lose
to beat them.
 
It's not a play until it shows up in Madden.

Also, there is a name for it. It's called "The Zone Read". Vince Young used it to death at UT.
 
I am interestd to see how Pat White will be added to the WildCat. Currently you have Ricky and Ronnie who can run(and Ronnie throws on occasion). However, if you add Pat White who can legit throw/run, you have an interesting task as a D coordinator.

Hmmm other things I wish we didn't have to hear about anymore. I'm sick of hearing the term "Wildcat" (or Wild*InsertMascotHere*) and I'm sick of hearing about Ricky Williams smoking pot. It's not a gimmick, god forbid someone bring a little creativity or independence to a playbook. The Jets crybabying over it was a laugh.

Jets "You can't just hike the ball to a RB and go, that's not fair"
Dolphins "How so?"
Jets "Because you're winning"
 
the hate on it is incredible to me. Warren Sapp's comments about it were the best thing i've ever heard.
"This is disrespectful to all defenses," Sapp said on Showtime's "Inside the NFL" roundtable Wednesday night. "It's disrespectful. You're taking the best player in the game, the quarterback, and you're putting him out wide, outside the numbers, and you put the running back in the back.

"How the hell you going to throw the ball? I'm not even thinking about throw right now. I'm going to get everybody in the gap. It's just power 'O.' You have the running back with the ball already in his hand."

uhhhhh? the "wildcat" is basically the single wing that's been aound since before the forward pass.

the dolphins almost run the spinning fullback version and they put a little modern day twist on it.

now if some team would run a full spinning fullback single wing, even at the college level, that would be a sight to see.

i have old film of that and it is a hoot to watch.

hey! a guy has to watch some football off-season.....right?
