The Defense is starting to take some steps

Does anyone think that our defense is making progress? Yes, they weren't great today but I think they are starting to look better. Amobi looked pretty good... Our secondary looked a hell of alot better... And They weren't any big plays given up and they put some pressure on the Qb. They also stopped the run for the most part. We might have somwething here. I think it's baby steps but If the D gets stout and the O gets their act together.... Well, you never know....

Definately making strides. Inconsistent yes. They will suck ass on occasion but then other times they play brilliantly like in the 2nd half. Hopefully they find a way to play great all 4 quarters instead of just 2.

We still only have one freaking interception as a team I think.

And what, we got one sack today? So that's like 3 so far this season?

A good defense sacks a QB and gets picks.

Doesn't matter. It was a loss and scoreboard is all that counts so all further analysis is pointless.

5 going into today, 6 on the season - which is bottom third of the league. We had 2 INT's going into today.

The defense is lukewarm to medium warm horsecrap. There are individual players with more sacks then our entire team.

Amobi Okoye had another good game in a row. Barwin took a baby step. Antonio Smith continues to get pressure. Mario was clearly slowed by his shoulder, couldn't get under pads comfortably.

I can understand complaining about the oline, the head coach, even the QB (who put up great numbers). I really don't understand fans wanting to criticize this defense now. They have made major strides the past two weeks and shutout a very prolific offense on the road for an entire half. The Cardinals only converted 2 third downs the entire game: they gave up one fisrt down in the entire 2nd half, and had 4 3 and outs.

By the way, it's hard to have sacks when you are trailing the entire game. Most sacks come when QBs predictably throw from 7 step drops. The ineffectiveness of the offense in the first half had a lot to do with the lack of sacks. If Warner was in a position where he had to make plays late, then there would be some sacks. Instead, the pressure led to him throwing the ball away (a lot) in the second half.

I'd say it was a darn good defensive effort for a team starting 2 rookies and only 5 games in to a new scheme. They are getting pressure, laying punishing hits, making plays, stopping the run, and getting the ball back to the offense.

Arizona had 11 posessions of consequence and scored 3 times. 340 total yards. 1 turnover. 5 3 and outs, 1 Turnover... who wouldn't have taken that going into the day. This loss is on the offense and some questionable coaching decisions in the second half.

2 very good consecutive defensive efforts! I still think this team wins 10-11 games. I expect a 3 game win streak starting Sunday at Cincy.

agree with the first part, hope your right about the last statement :specnatz:

We have two. One by Busing against the Jets and another by Wilson against Tennessee.

I think Pollard does make a difference. He had a goof but for the most part played solidly.

That bolded paragraph reeks of excuse. I don't like qualifiers. You don't want me to ***** about a team that gave up 21 points in the first half? By what logic exactly?

And you watched none of Cincy-Baltimore if you think we are in Cincy's league.

Defense taking steps??

Under Bush's new scheme, we 'supposedly' blitz more than anyone in the league, but we still can't get pressure on the QB unless both Ryans and Cushing blitz at the same time.

And you think the secondary has problems??

I've this so many times I've lost count. Until we get can pressure on the QB with the front 4 by themselves, we will always be in a disadvantage against any good QB, or any good coordinator.

We rarely sent more than 5. And, we did get good pressure sending 4 a number of times. Other than holding Arizona scoreless and allowing no 3rd down conversions the entire 2nd half, what did you need to see in order to agree that the defense is taking steps?

Warner was getting beat like a rented mule before the Texans game....every team in the league was destroying their pass protection, but we only got "good pressure". I guess that is taking baby steps

Well, that's what I was thinking too. They had shown the stat with his passer rating when pressured and it was a 2 point something, I can't remember what was in the tenth spot (2.8 ?). It was god awful low and we just couldn't get there. Now granted we did OK in the second half, but if we would have done that in the first, we would have won the game.

Baby steps are for preseason/training camp.

This is the 5th game. That was unacceptable. Same ol' same ol' no rush, thank god they don't run, Dunta was abused like a red-headed step child, 2ndary still can't cover for ****, DL getting minimal pass rush.

Waste. Waste of talent, waste of time. There are too many guys on that D too suck like they do and yet, they do.

Baby steps in the 5th game, someone else can find the silver lining on this cloud. This defense sucks. It has sucked, it does suck and it will probably continue to suck until the end of the season when we play teams for games that don't matter (unless you're trying to save your BFF Gary Kubiak's job)

That's the difference in being behind in the game like they were in SF and especially Indy versus having a 21 point lead. Hard to beat a guy up when he doesn't have to make a big play to stay in the game. Can't we still be critical of the team and the loss and still acknowledge that this defense is definitely improving?

I have to agree, we came into the second half with some obvious issues, and we corrected them and only allowed 21 points for the cardinals which we all agree have a potent offense and shut them out the second half..

Timekiller, if we had asked a week ago if you would have taken 21 points for the cardinals at home would you have taken those points? I would have.

In my best Butthead voice "Beavis...this sucks more than anything that has ever sucked before"

To only have given up 21 points from the Cards O is decent whether they were in one half, one quarter our in a 2 minute stretch, they only scored 21 points the whole game so, although only wins count, I think the title of the thread is accurate.

I think it's somewhat safe to hold judgement until week 17 is over, but until then I'm going to speculate that the D is in fact getting incrementally better.

I can't believe some of you guys.

Hey take away those 3 plays of 50 plus yards against Tenn. and the defense looked great! Take away the 61 yard TD run by MJD and the defense looks great. Hey take away the entire first half of a game and the defense looks great!

4 years into Gary's tenure and the defense looks like it's taking steps 4-5 games into the season instead of the typical 8 or once they are out of playoff contention. Awesome. Frank is really rallying the defense.

Taking steps is bullbutter! I suppose it'll all come together for the last quater of the year and give everybody a false sense of hope.....again.

When I look around the league and see defenses like the Saints, Broncos, Colts, etc. show an instant improvement it pisses me off. They had the same amount of time in the offseason as we did, but we can't seem to put a full game together after 5 weeks?!

Piss on taking steps! I want it all from start to finish.

They made a poor choice in the offseason by not finding a better saftey to start the year with. Believe it or not I think they really missed J. Reeves. They may do enough to get into the top half of the league this year. The offense should hold up there end and Kube's does just enough to save his job.

Our strong safety played very well, so I think you are refering to a free safety? Would we have won the game with Louis Delmas picked @# 33 by Lions? Or William Moore selected by Atlanta @ # 23 3nd round? As much as I want a FS (since no DT available next draft) I do not see a safety making much difference in yesterday's game. I do think Delmas may have made a difference against the long runs against us earlier games but we would have had to miss out on Cushing and no one else took Delmas in the first. No other safety either.

You can't win games by only playing 30 minutes.

Our defense played 58 minutes in that game. The last two minutes of the first half, they were caught slip'n.... but they played a heck of a game for the other 52.

Ouch....... maybe not. But we whupped that ass today. :roast:

Unbelievable. Against Carson Palmer on the rebound still having a few good receivers the TEXANS D actually shows up with some pass coverage. Astounding, especially since I didn't think the pass rush was particularly effective. Cushing was a nightmare huh? I can't figure out if they are getting better or not but giving Ochocrapo a reason to open his mouth makes my week better.

They've still got safety & D-line issues, but i do think overall we are geling. Most importantly, Bush is making key adjustments in the 2nd half & our guys are making plays when we need them to..Next year in the draft if we don't take a safety I'll be calling for kube's head before the season starts.

Our secondary had a good game today. Our pass rush for the most part wasn't making Palmer too uncomfortable and the secondary stepped up and competed anyways. We played a great QB with a pretty good complement of receivers and didn't look bad doing it for once. Robinson, Reeves, Quin, and McCain are looking better each week at CB, and I'm pretty content with Wilson and Pollard at S.

I'd be curious to see how our defense ranks over the past 3 games as opposed to the first 6. What a night and day difference. If they can just fix their 2-minute defense, we may be on to something here. 14 points by Arizona in the last 2 minutes of the first half last week, and 10 by the Bengals this week. That must be improved.
