The steve slaton mix up?

On that big pass to owen daniels, steve slaton "had a mix up" as many broadcasters said when he bumped into Schaub on what was suppose to be a play action pass. But for any of yall who played football know that he didnt screw up at all, he actually did perfect and exactly what he was suppose to...if u watch the play on the highlights on the homepage..slaton goes for the playaction but see's a safety screaming off the edge which schaub didnt see...he bumped into schaub but he saved the sack, probally the fumble, and proabley the injury to schaub cause it wouldve been a nasty hit, by cutting the saftey and getting him on the ground...hell of a block slaton you did great on that play...so to the broadcasters who dont know what they are talking about...slaton did a hell of a job, not a mix up, or brain fart, or whatever u wanna call it

Your interpretation is a bit more favorable than mine. It appeared to me Slaton ran into Schaub and then turned to get in the way of the rush. It worked and that is ok with me.
 
It was a great block, now if he could just see his own lineman on the ground on all 4's so he doesn't trip over them, land on his head, and cough up the ball since he was not down by contact. What a goofy looking mistake that was. Glad he didn't break his neck.
 
seeing how he blocked his man and didn't knock the ball outta schaubs hands, i've no qualms with what he did.

If you look at the pick i posted schaub is still doing playaction and slatons head is turned and body already heading toward the blitz...it was a hell of a pick up...
 
I don't think it was a mix up either. I think he picked up the blitz and helped Schaub get the throw off.

I grant that your young eyes are better than mine but his hands remain in a receive the ball position &
he appears to be falling backwards and to his right to avoid collision with Schaub. If he was to move to right to block intentionally, it may have helped if he had remained upright. I thought the defensive player fell over him.

He didnt fall to the ground, he threw at the safety which runningbacks are coached to do for the following reasons....

1. if u have a defensive player comeing full speed at you and u try and stand there and take the block you are gonna get run over and they will get the sack anyway

2. if you throw at there legs not fall it gets the hands of the defender out of the air for a deflection and on the ground to catch himself

so yes as a running back cutting someone is the best way to block a blitz...
 
Steve certainly DID throw himself into the legs of that defender.

He wrecked that guy's legs and crumpled him perfectly.

But I don't think that was by design, if that's what is being theorized on here. I think Steve got the play mixed up, and recovered nicely just in time.

Hey, even if he DID get mixed up (or didn't)...he still had the presence of mind to correct himself fast...and get a great block thrown on that guy.

U need to watch the clip...he starts in almost a sprint to the left, he sees the defender and stops and goes right where he bumps into schaub, causing him to lose his balance which cut blocking is the only option to stop the blitz...plus like i said earlier cut block is the most effective block for a runningback

Ahh.....now that I replay that scene in my mind, you just might be right!

He saw that guy and re-directed himself as he was reaching Schaub.

LOL. STILL, I'm amazed Schaub didn't just stop and stand still and go "WTH?"
 
back in the day, it was the rb's responibility to pick up a blitzing lb/ss

normally, it would be a inside blitz.

he made a good read after the snap and did whatever he could to pick up the blitz.

good read + good block = good play.

i doubt he would have done that last year.

LOL me too...Schaub was proabllly saying that in his head but when he say the replay he proably said thanks for saving my carrer :lol:

Kubiak said the same thing on his Monday afternoon radio show on 610. It was not a busted play or a mixup. Slaton probably should have read the blitz right off, but he did recognize it in time to take down the safety.

Let me see here, I'm a 210 lb back in a static position and have a 220 lb ss bearing down on me @ 4.4 speed? yep, I cut him and get him on the ground pronto.

since when has a chop block been a bad thing?

you man up and get blasted into the qb if you stand your ground.

he did what he had to do and the result was delicious, thank you very much:tiphat:
 
After watching the Slaton touchdown on the draw and being an ex-offensive lineman...steve slaton did nothing on that touch down...he was running up feild with 4 Huge linemen in front of him...he had a perfect sucker inside rush block...then 4 linemen running in front of him....if the oline could do this more we will be successful
