Pick a non-loser team to cheer for

gtexan02

Working?
After living outsdide of Houston for the last 4 years, I've found that its almost impossible to get Texans game coverage or news if you live more than 200 miles away. Ive spent tons of time and money following this team, and more weeks than not, Ive had to walk out of a sports bar embarssed in my Texans jersey.

As such, I decided it was time I started following a local team. I picked the Ravens, because they are everything the Texans are not. A solid team with a rock solid defense.

I can't tell you how refreshing it is to finally watch a team play football the way its meant to. With attitude and toughness. It makes watchign the Texans D week in and week out a little more berable.

So who is your backup NFL team? THe one you cheer for once the Texans are eliminated from relevance?

The NFL season is too short to waste it on the Texans. By week 5 or 6 we're usually all but done playoff wise. Theres too much good football to be had

Steelers actually. I still have that memory of them from when the Oilers used to go up against them and I've got a good friend who is a Steeler fan so I just kind of started out wanting them to do good as long as it didn't interfere with the Texans "needs". Since we suck like the expansion Saints and Buc's and continue to suck for years and years I find that the Steelers "goals" and ours don't conflict much. See, they try to win a championship every year and we try to finally get over .500. Plus once the playoffs start the Texans no longer matter.

God I hate the Houston Texans right now. They're like a weekly (or bi-weekly maybe) dose of the Buffalo loss. They're like a M-F depression machine. They're everything that was bad about the Oilers (except the owner but McNair's starting to really piss me off now that I think about it....) with none of the good. They're like the Oilers inept early 70's and early 80's without ever getting better.

Jets. Buddy er... I mean Rex Ryan is everything Gary Kubiak is not, and he gets his team ready to play. Sanchez is an up and coming QB, and the New York defense plays with a fire the Texans could never even dream of except for when they feel like they have something to prove. The Jets D acts like they have something to prove every week.

For the most part I've been keeping the Steelers as my lover on the side. I just need a team who has a bruising offense and a relentless defense to channel my anger through, although lately I've been faltering towards the Ravens.

Good choices. Every once in a while the only way to make a marriage work is to have a lover or two on the side...

I don't have one. I have players that I root for, and that ends up resulting in some team that I'm rooting for, but really it's just players. Since Singletary took over, I find myself rooting for the 49ers, and when they drafted Coffee, that just sort of solidified it. Plus, I like that thye kept the Cowboys out of the SB so many times. I really want to see Kolb do well, so I'm rooting for the Eagles, which works doubly well when they play the Cowboys. I root for Brandon Jacobs, which also works well when they play the Cowboys. And I've always liked Santana Moss, which also works well when they play the Cowboys.

I think there's a trend in there, but more analysis is required.

:D

My wife is from Saint Louis so that was working out well for a little while at my NFC team of choince. Now... not so much.

I like the Saints, Rams, Patriots, and whoever plays the Cowboys. I can't ever legitimately follow them and love them though.

It is tempting, and call me dumb, but I'll continue to root for both teams whether they win the playoffs or pull a Lions and go 0-16. I guess if I *had* to pick a winning team to root for, I'd go with the 49ers, Vikings, or Jets.

Well, I don't know if I'd go with dumb, but I figure with that combo of teams, you had to choose one of them at some point. Some of us were born into unfortunate fandom, but choosing one of those willingly ... hmm. I'll have to think about that.

Denver is AFC #2 and Chicago is NFC team. I have always liked the tough nosed Chicago Bear D's of the past and I thought Kubes would bring his success in Denver with him to Htown.

No set team. I don't really root for anyone, but will root against the Cowboys, Titans and Pats. Always a fan of underdog victories as well.

Houston is my team. In good times and bad. For good or ill. I will root for no other.

Yeah, sucks to be me. :violin

I like the Colts, 49ers, Packers and Eagles as my non-Texans-not-rooting-for-but-not-rooting-against teams. I couldn't possibly follow them like I do the Texans but when they are on t.v. I'll almost always watch a few quarters.

I have never kept it a secret that I am also a Giants fan since I lived up there also. I kinda like the Jets too however never really could get totally behind them because they are AFC and so were the Oilers and now Texans.

Though I was a big Jets fan yesterday. When I was a kid (before moving to NY) the Bucs were my NFC team. I just liked their orange unis. I still root for them when they are not playing the Giants or Texans.

Of course I am also a big fan of whomever is playing the Titans or Cowboys.

The NFL season is simply too long to be a fan of only the Texans. In the latter weeks of the season, its just not fun to watch the Texans trying to save face against another cellar dweller when the option of watching a quality team vying for the playoffs is a possibility.

I find myself rooting for the Ravens more and more each week (mainly for the reason gtexan said).

I wonder if Buddy's other son could bring the same passion here that Rex Ryan has given the Jets this year.

Being a hardcore Cowboys fan growing up I rooted for the Oilers also. But my favorite non-Texas team was always the Chargers. Loved Fouts, Joiner, Jefferson, Winslow and Air Coryell. Loved the unis too. Still cheer for them, especially since LT has been there too. They are just a fringe team that always seems to be pretty good but can't get over the hump. I have family in Baltimore...Mom grew up there and family lived there...I was born there and moved to Ft. Worth at 1. So they were old Colts fans and now the cousins and all are Ravens fans.

My NFC team is the Falcons. I will always root for the Texans though, win or lose, it's just a feeling you can't replace.

After the Oilers left and my time as being a Cowboy fan expired (could no longer stand Jerry) I always enjoyed watching the Eagles. I loved watching Randal Cunningham and Ricky "Running" Waters. I didn't boo the McNAbb choice btw, I remember saying....Yeah Rick would've been nice but this guy is going to be good down the road.

Other then that ...... I know I am going to get Neg repped possibly, but I sort of follow the Colts from time to time. I enjoy watching Manning orchestrate the offense....just not when its shredding the Texans. Besides I had always respected Tony Dungy.

The Broncos. The Boise State Broncos !
OK, OK it's a college team but I lived there in the 90s and absolutely loved the city and the whole state of Idaho and so got myself one of those bright orange T-Shirts with navy blue letters on the front ("Boise State") on a visit to Boise earlier this month.
But my top pro team is and will always be the Texans, no matter if we end up 1-15 or whatever this year ?

I've been pretty keen on what the 9ers have been doing for a while now. I actually liked the Nolan hire (and even thought the suits were cool. Shows you how much I know about football). But I really like the Singletary hire. I think they still need a few more pieces, and I'm not sold on Hill or any part of their passing game TBH (with the possible exception of Davis) long term. But that team is going to be fun to watch. Very physical and opportunistic.

I still detest Bush, but I might have a hard time rooting against the Saints this year. Always dug me some Drew Brees, and I think New Orleans needs a winner.

As a kid I always liked the Skins and Eagles. I couldn't help but respect Pittsburgh for their tradition, consistent success, and their style of play. I still think the Rooneys are absolutely the finest owners in the history of sports. They built a model franchise.

every sports team i like sucks(except my high school football team)

Aggies :(
Astros :(
Texans :(
Rockets :(

yeah my life sucks :(

sometimes i wish i was born in boston.

I hate 28 teams with a passion and have pity for fans of the Lions, Browns and Chiefs. All deserve better than the crap they've been fed and I find myself always rooting for those teams to escape their respective basements.

My best friend is a diehard Lions fan that has been so demoralized that when I called him up to congratulate him on the W yesterday, he sighed and said so what? He's been that defeated by the 3 decades of hell that franchise has given him.

Weah cuhsed! Only one of owah four teams won a chamiponship this yeah!

I don't have a backup team. So through good and bad I'm stuck with the Texans. I chose them to root for and I'm sticking to it. Well, at least I have the über super Austrian soccer teams in european competitions and the national soccer team, cause the ... wait they suck more than the Texans do. Sigh. At least my local soccer team leads in the domestic league.

Don't feel too bad... these are the teams I used to cheer for growing up:

Houston Oilers
Quebec Nordiques
Montreal Expos

None of them exist anymore. I went through a few years without a favorite team. That's why I was so happy when Houston was back in the NFL. I'll cheer for for the Texans no matter what. Sure they're inconsistent, & sometimes frustrating to watch; but you all know how much it hurts to lose a team. That's why I drive around town with a Texans car flag up here.

I'm a Cowboys fan as well - yep, I said it. However, it was a birthright since being born in Irving. I was Cowboy fan during the Oilers and after the Oilers. Then the Texans came around and took my heart (and stomped on it, squeezed it, then let it run for a 50+ yard score on 3rd and 20).

Allegiance to Texans first, Texas teams second.
