Browns' Winslow: 'I humbly apologize'

From Yahoo Sports

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Kellen Winslow Jr. apologized to Browns fans on Thursday for his reckless use of a motorcycle and confirmed that he will miss the upcoming season because of injuries sustained in the crash.

Winslow tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and suffered unspecified internal injuries on May 1 when he wrecked his high-powered motorcycle while attempting tricks in a secluded parking lot near his home.

For the first time since the crash, Winslow confirmed that he will miss his second season as a pro and acknowledged that it was a mistake to take up motorcycle riding.

``To those members of the Cleveland Browns family who I have disappointed by my decision to ride a motorcycle, I humbly apologize,'' Winslow said in the statement. ``In hindsight it was unwise to attempt to learn to ride a motorcycle without a professional instructor in a controlled environment.

``While many of you are disappointed that I will not be on the field with my teammates for this upcoming season, no one is more disappointed in this fact than me.''

Winslow did not indicate if he will seek a second medical opinion on his knee. Last week, two sources within the league told The Associated Press that Winslow tore his ACL in the accident.

Winslow, who spent nine days at the Cleveland Clinic recovering from injuries in the crash, has been working out at the Browns' training facility in Berea. He has taken part in the team's 11-day passing camp, learning the new playbook and system being installed by Browns first-year coach Romeo Crennel.

Because he broke a dangerous activities clause in his contract, the Browns may try to recoup a portion of the $5.05 million in bonuses he has received since signing a six-year, $40 million contract last season.

The club may restructure Winslow's contract to allow him to make back some of the money he may have to return.

Winslow bought the motorcycle on April 9. Westlake Police obtained a surveillance tape that showed him performing ``wheelies'' on the bike before hitting a curb at 35 mph and flying over the handlebars.

He was charged with disregarding safety, a misdemeanor that carries a maximum fine of $150.

Winslow, a star at the University of Miami, was the sixth overall pick in the 2004 draft. The Browns traded a second-round pick to move up one spot to select the son of Hall of Famer Kellen Winslow Sr.

The club was counting on him to improve their offense last season, but he broke his right leg in Week 2 at Dallas and missed Cleveland's last 14 games.

He was still recovering from two operations on his leg at the time of his motorcycle accident.

that just cracks me up! it's kinda sad too though, but he did it to himself. I kinda don't feel sorry for him...

Well at least he apologized which was the right thing to do. KW JR missing this whole season gives the Browns an even bigger chance at landing Matt Lineart next year.

Wait... he said he should have been learning to ride tha bike with an instructor in a controlled enviroment.... but yet, he was seen doing wheelies?

Wow, he learns fast.

I wonder how this apology came about. By that I mean that I wonder whether it was his father or his agent who made him do it. I've seen nothing in Kellen Winslow Jr to make me believe he genuinely feels sorry for his choice or understands why he should.

I could be wrong though. Maybe he's learned something through all of this.

I think when he made the soldier comment it was his father that advised him to publicly apologize, so I agree with you that this situation would not be any different.

Yeah, because he's incapable of feeling bad for what he did.

It IS possible for someone to mature, give the kid a chance.

I would feel bad too about doing something stupid that also lost me millions of dollars.

He very well could have matured and sincerely regret his actions, and will be completely focused on football from here on out. Hopefully he's not too late.

Can anyone else think of a player who has gone on to a great or hall of fame career after missing their first two years of their career?

OMG this is so typical if the guy hadn't apologized by their 1st lost then you would be saying "The least he could do would be apologize" but sinde he did the obvious response was "He doesn't even mean it" Sometimes no matter what you do you still lose.

Nothing but a PR move, IMO. This kid has shown nothing but arrogance and disdain for anyone but himself, so I doubt this is real.

What part is "typical"?
The part about an overpaid, spoiled, arrogant athlete apologizing only AFTER:
A. Him violating the terms of his multimillion $$$ contract?
B. While rehabbing from an earlier on-field injury - getting injured while doing "stunts"?
C. Having the team threaten to force him to repay some of his bonus $$$?
D. After realizing that his entire second season is shot because of his stupidity (and violation of his contract), that the team is pretty angry and will probably ask for some $$$ back, a week after the rest of the world is made aware through "sources" that he's done for the year w/ a torn ACL (the team couldn't make any announcement due to the "Winslow family policy"
), he decides to step forward and apologize in hopes of saving a little face and a lotta $$$.

My vote is for "D".

..or were you referring to the "average" fan who's tired of these prima donnas thinking they're above the law & above consequence because they can play a game...because the public has fed their Egos for so long they believe the hype themselves?
