Emmitt Smith on the Boys

HoustonFrog

Dallas Frog
As a Boys fan I agree with alot of what he is saying but as a fan I also hope that there was some addition by substraction this off season and that the defense under Phillips makes up for some short comings. I do like that they aren't picked to win it.

"Realistically, I think that the Cowboys can win seven games," Emmitt said.

Emmitt seems to think that the new all-business approach, complete with player accountability, is a bunch of bull.

"I mean, when I start hearing things are going to change, I keep asking myself as a player, how much are they going to change?" he said. "Are you going to be a hard-nosed coach now since things are going to change? Are you going to be more focused than you were last year? Those kind of things, I'm like, c'mon. This is not a game where you can just turn it on and turn it off."

And Emmitt took aim at Roy Williams again, praising almost every other one of Tony Romo's weapons but saying he couldn't understand why the Cowboys gave up so much to get the receiver from Detroit.

"The question is, can Roy step up and be what they need him to be?" Emmitt said. "I don't know. I don't know if it's possible.

"I do not see him as a No. 1. I never have saw him as a No. 1. Never have. When I say No. 1, I mean your No. 1 go-to guy. He's not your No. 1 go-to guy."

Emmitt's suggested solution: Rely heavily on the running game. And hope that the defensive coordinator/head coach does his job.

"[So] when you have your off-season and you say things are going to change and you've never been that dominant personality or in that leadership position then, as a player, you lose me," Emmitt said during an appearance on Sirius NFL Radio (via Pro Football Talk). "You lost me. I'm sitting there saying, 'OK, now you're going to become a leader?' What happened when we had all this great talent over here and we had a chance to go, not only in the playoffs, but in the first round of the playoffs when we got knocked out both times?

"Now all of a sudden you're going to change? And our talent level is less than it was two years ago? How much better can we be?"

"They asked me the question, 'What's the difference between the `90s guys and these guys?' What I see, it's not the same. Troy used to walk down that bench and chew every offensive linemen's behind who wasn't blocking. And [Michael] Irvin used to do the same thing. I don't see that happening when things get critical. That's the only thing I'm saying.

"Now, if Tony Romo is looked on as the leader of this ballclub -- which he is projected to be and from the outside standpoint that's the way he is perceived -- then you need to see that from your leader."

One of the major complaints I use to hear about Troy at first was that he wasn't a leader..he did grow into that and I do remember seeing him chew out alot of guys. Irvin did the same.
