Texans sign eight to practice squad

I'm glad to see they brought Buster back. I half expected to see Brink brought back. Maybe they're not going to trade Rex.
 
I'm glad to see Arian Foster back in the fold, even if it's the practice squad. Has anyone seen a reason we kept Andre Hall as one of the RBs? I don't recall seeing him in preseason, but then I wasn't totally sober (hahaha) during the Tampa game. If anyone has an opinion on Hall I'd like to hear it, the other three RBs I already know.

Hall looked better than Foster in the Tampa game, and the fact that Foster had a difficult time getting on the field due to injury may have factored into the decision also.

Hall hit the ground running the second he signed with us a couple weeks ago. He had the look of a man who's experienced the bitterness of being cut. He wasn't going to let that happen. I dont believe him to be a longterm solution but i'm glad the Texans are giving him a shot. He had competition. His place is well earned.

You beat me to it! :)
during the post-halftime coachchat, Kubiak said that he told Foster that he "wanted to see more out of him" that he (kubiak) thought Foster left some yards out on the field. "We'll see how he responds", Kubiak said. Apparently, Foster's "response" was insufficient to beat out Hall for that last RB spot.

From my point of view, Hall ran with more authority than Foster did in the TB game. It was almost like the Rex vs. Dan comparison; just like Rex had the better game at QB, Hall had the better game at RB.
 
Hall started for Denver last year and had a couple of big games before he was injured.

He can return KO's, Hall is a Moats clone but he runs harder.

Hall has good hands and is a good receiver out of the backfield.

Hall is more familiar with the offense and is better at blitz pickup than Foster.
 
This is basically the Denver RB approach. You have a guy who works for a year or two but you always keep solid options nearby or on the practice squad. You run the guys into the ground and then get newer ones late in the next or via FA.
 
The roster and PS shape up pretty much as expected.

It makes more sense to keep Hall on the roster, he's already familiar with the NFL.
I swear that by the way Foster ran the ball in the PS, he was instructed to do so; ie. as not to show too much so we can slip him on the PS.

Let Brink go play somewhere in the "Minor League" better than have him on the PS. He has played in the WCO throughout college and he had spent enough time here to learn enough scheme already. Now that we have both Grossman and DanO, we don't need a project. He can always be called back.

I like Helms but he needs to bulk up and build some more strength.

Why? I think it's pretty apparent now that Brink has no future at the NFL level.....he's just a emergency camp arm now. (I hope I never have to see him in a Texans' camp again) We'll probably be using another late round draft pick on another project QB next year.
 
Nice. Actually, this is probably the first PS I've seen in recent memory that had players we could use. Seems like in years past they always had some washed up OT's, TE's and QB and none were worth putting in an actual game. At least Buster, Foster, and Jenkins seem to have some real skills.
 
I know most of these guys because they're repeats from last year or they have college name recognition (like Foster).

But who the heck is Mark Parson??
Anyone heard of this guy before? I don't remember seeing him in T/C...? Did we steal him from some other team?


Never mind; sounds like he's been here all thru camp, I just overlooked him....
Parson (5-10, 188) signed an undrafted free agent contract with the Texans on June 5, 2009. He attended Ohio University, where he was a three-year starter. At his college pro day workout, he reportedly ran a 4.4-second 40-yard dash.

I actually don't think we'll trade Grossman.

I think Kubiak in the past would've liked to keep 3 Qbs on the roster but couldn't get anyone decent to come in and be that third guy, unless you liked the idea of OD being the emergency third QB. Which probably terrified everyone considering the non existent running game.

To be honest this is a make or break year for Matt. If he misses a significant amount of time due to injury I hope we decide to cut the cord on the Matt Schaub experiment. It wouldn't be due to not liking the guy, his work ethic, or his body of work, problem is we still have a limited body of work. We all know Grossman's got a live arm and just needs to work between the ears. From what I've seen between the good Rex and bad Rex, he's capable of playing inside himself.

If we have to pull the plug on a Schaub I like our two options moving forward without investing a high draft pick.

I would hope then we draft a QB to develop say in the 4th round. Like Tony Pike from Cinci.

They evidently wanted both.............and Hall is not eligible for the practice squad.

I've heard he's actually pretty good. I recall a thread about him at the beginning of TC or maybe in the OTA's.
 
We're not trading Grossman, he is here for the year. We can't win with Orlosvky this year, next year when he has some more coaching but not this year. We can with Grossman this year in a pinch.

He is pretty good for a start. He will need to improve over McCain though.
Both of them have a disadvantage against big tall receivers (especially when they are fast, too) just like many other DBs.

I like them both, but they will have to improve the skills, how to handle those big fast guys, otherwise it just won't work.

I'll stick with Aaron Glenn's theory that it is no disadvantage at all as the smaller DB's can start and stop faster, etc. He did grant AJ being a freak of nature, but that is kind of definitional.

A few small surprises for me. I didn't think they would keep Helms so I guess he played better than I realized. Thought they would keep only 1 of the DE's (either Nading or Jamison) but not both. Also thought they would keep Leonard, the DT from Hawaii. I think he played pretty well when he was on the field and I believe I heard he was making a good impression early in camp. Guess it wasn't good enough. I also thought they would keep Washburn (T from the Citadel) as well as Stenavich since we only have 3 on the roster, and I thought both played well. I guess some of these decisions had to do with Special Teams play. JMHO!

That's how I look at it. If Schaub is hurt this season, Grossman will be the starter. Orlovsky is the guy they will look to next season in that situation and they decide not to keep Schaub. Well, at least that's my current opinion. I reserve the right to change it when I am more awake.
 
I have to confess that I didn't know who Brett Helms was either. Then I saw he started at LSU during their National Championship season in 2007...
CAREER
One of the most productive and consistent offensive linemen in school history ... Played in 46 games during his LSU career, starting 41 times ... Made 39 starts at center and LSU was 30-9 in those games ... Other starts came at left guard during his redshirt freshman season in 2005 ... Graduated in May of 2008 with a degree in general studies ... Signed a free agent contract with the Houston Texans in April of 2009.
SENIOR SEASON (2008)
Started all 13 game at center for the Tigers ... Played a total of 757 snaps from scrimmage ... Finished with 62 knockdowns ... Graded out at 85% or better seven times, including season-best 90% in bowl win over Georgia Tech ... Had season-best seven knockdowns in back-to-back games against Alabama and Troy.
JUNIOR SEASON (2007)
Played and started all 14 games ... Has helped pave the way for an LSU offense that ranks second in the SEC and 11th in the country in rushing yards per game ... Played a total of 986 snaps from scrimmage ... Played every snap in games against Florida (80 plays), Auburn (68), Alabama (80), Arkansas (101) and Tennessee (81) ... Seems as though the Angry Cherokee has found himself another potential starter. If this guy and Caldwell both develop successfully, we could have a really deep O-line next year.

He will have to put on some weight (muscle). They have him listed at 6' 2" 270 lbs. That's pretty small and I think he would get "manhandled"/"ragdolled" going up against those big NT's in the 3-4. As we all remember, that was one of the big complaints about Myers last season, and he was listed at 293 lbs. on the roster!
 
I wasn't aware Buster had PS eligibility left. It's nice to see him back. He was a nice thumper against other back ups.

I wasn't as surprised as some were when Foster made it through to out PS. IMO, he's been mediocre at best during camp and preseason games. Even though he was able to get decent yardage against back ups, he appeared very slow reading and hitting the hole. Once Hall came in it became an obvious distinction between the two. Hall was very quick to make his read and hit it full speed. As a matter of fact, I think he, Moats and Brown have looked very good hitting the creases with decisiveness.

I reckon Slaton will be Slaton come Sunday. Or at least I hope he does.
 
i thought verdell might make the PS but i guess not. i dont see why they minimise the PS to 8. imo you should be able to keep 10-12 if you want
