JJ Has Definitely Fallen........

CloakNNNdagger

Hall of Fame
off the bubble.........if he ever really was on it. He has shown progressive improvement in his manner and performance throughout the preseason. At one point in time, we will be seeing AJ AND JJ going out on long sideline patterns SIMULTANEOUSLY. Which of them will/can the D's cover? As fast as these two can get down field, our Oline will not have to hold the D off forever for the QB to get the pass off. We could very well have the next dynamic duo of Divide and Conquer.

Let's see how Jacoby responds before we go crazy. JJ has experienced preseason success in the past, and his head got big.

He's made the team, now let's see him carry some of this over into the regular season, and let's see if he can develop some consistency.

Until then, he's still a questionable commodity to me.

For TONIGHT, though - fantastic game. I especially love that he seems to have gotten over his penchant to carry the ball like a loaf of bread. All preseason long, he's had that thing locked in high and tight.

Had a very good game tonight. Can we keep him an Martenize?

With Kevin Walter hurting, I wouldn't be surprised if they kept six until Walter gets back. His hammy problem isn't the kind you can take chances with, so I wouldn't be surprised if he misses a game or two.

Whoever thought JJ was even on the bubble is delusional

Depends on when you're talking about. Going into tonight, I thought he already had it locked up... but in week one and two I think he was on the bubble... but he hasn't had any drops, and he's looked good receiving the ball since then.

Because of our suddenly terrible punt return blocking, we haven't really seen him do big things in that realm - but man, he's ten times the receiver he was last year.

Yup, has anyone other than JJ taken a punt return? That is the clue to me.

Jenkins has taken some punts, and I believe Martinez did as well during some of our earlier games. Against TB I think JJ handled punts in the first half, and Jenkins fielded them in the second half.

Okay, I'll ask the question. If we only keep 5 WR's & AJ, Andre Davis, Walter, & JJ have locked up positions, who would you rather keep, David Andersen or Glenn Martinez? From what I've seen in preseason, I'm leaning towards Martinez.

I'll take David Anderson, who has already proven he can play during the regular season and has earned his spot on the WR depth chart after multiple years on the PS. David Anderson isn't even the 5th WR...so he's not even the guy on the edge.

Anderson is a supreme route runner and established as the Zebra (slot) guy on this team. To think he's on the bubble is just ignorant.

I disagree but "on the bubble" is a relative term anyways

Before offseason started Kubiak even said himself that Jones needed to step his game up. They didn't draft him in the 3rd round to be a career punt returner....unless he showed something as a actual receiver.....HE WAS on the bubble.

I've seen JJ shine in preseason games before. I'm just not sold on him as a regular season receiver. He's a hinderence to the running game because he can't/won't block and he has questionable hands. It makes me so nervous just watching him catching and holding onto punts that I can't even watch anymore. I would lean toward Martinez.

I hate preseason...

I said this regarding Jacoby last month, and I think it still stands:

Jacoby Jones - The star of this practice was Jacoby Jones. Yes, the the same Jacoby Jones that half this forum has on the waiver wire. From his "Air" drum major routine to the beat of the Texans Bullpen pep band at the beginning of practice, to the red zone drill that saw him score on 3 consecutive plays, Jones was dominating and entertaining. No one who watched this practice could ever say with a straight face that Jacoby is not one of the 53 best players on this roster.
Jones is the 2nd most talented WR on this team. Now, this is Jones' 3rd season and that talent must be realized. But, to think that fringe players like Jenkins or Martinez could take Jacoby's spot was/is absurd. Jones' punt returns have helped give the Texans field position. And he should be utilized more in the passing game by Kubiak. The Texans need to get more playmakers on the field. And Jacoby Jones is a playmaker.

Since we are probably going to keep 3 QB's my guess is we keep 5 wide even with K-dub hurt. Apostrophe, JJ and the funny man can fill in for the time being. I think Jenkins or Martinez (don't make me choose) will be on the psquad.

What the hell is THAT supposed to mean? What is a "regular season receiver?"
When did it become a good idea to cut a receiver, who's natural talent is second
only to Andre Johnson, and has shown a marked improvement over his
sophomore slump, after only TWO complete seasons in the league?

Last year, Jacoby SUCKED in preseason, and he also sucked in the regular
season. I think Jacoby's confidence was shattered after the Hunter Smith
incident at Reliant Stadium, and the coaches stuck by him until it was rebuilt.
This year the kid graduated college, trained with the Saint's receivers, busted
his tail all offseason, kept the ball high-and-tight, and not fumbling even a
SINGLE TIME!!

I think the kid is finally back, and Glenn Martinez, and Darnell Jenkins, and
whatever fringe player you want to put up there don't have the upside
that JJ has. My good friend, Dallas Cowgirls fan, says, and I quote,
"If ya'll don't want him, he's always welcome. Just tell him to ride I-45
North until he reaches his new home!"

I thought they said during the game that Martinez couldnt go to the PS because he has already been in the league for 4 seasons.

Does anybody know for sure?

If you have an accrued season in the NFL or two previous seasons on a practice squad, you're no longer eligible.

Martinez has both. He's not eligible, but Jenkins is.

Playmaker? Playmaker!? really? Have we forgotten about his playkilling drives!? I mean... I'm finished with the Jacoby Jones experiment. I was really hoping that he would not show flashes because i'm tired of being teased in the preseason. i'm ready to cut him ala Mathis style. Just how much playmaking does one have to do to offset the playkillers? It's a judgement that i'm finished with. Go to the CFL, Jones. I dont care. Just get off my team. I'm happy with my recievers as it is. Maybe if we had a poor bunch alas we dont. We do NOT need Jones when We've got the security of ball safety in David Anderson's returning abilities.

Dang, dude. Let the brotha play his THIRD season in the league. Most
2nd-year players go thru sophomore slumps. Next season, you'll be screamin
for us to cut Slaton.

The Texans need to get more playmakers on the field. And Jacoby Jones is a playmaker.

Yeah, regardless of which team he's making the play for.....when he touches the ball a big play happens, good or bad. Jacoby giveth and then Jacoby taketh away.

I'm not worried that Slaton will start dropping the ball. You make it round like Jones had a good rookie season. Not even! Jacoby Jones is a preseason wonder. It's easy to be when a player with flash goes up against backups. If Slaton starts dropping balls and fumbling in bunches, you'd better believe I'll be calling for his head. We only got 16 games. No room for constant error.

In case you missed it, I said that Jacoby's development was STUNTED when
Hunter Smith fractured Jacoby's shoulder in the 3rd game of the '07 season.
Jacoby was taking a HUGE punt return to the house, when the Colts' punter
slammed him from behind, separating his shoulder.

The coaches worked with him since, to help him regain his confidence.
Now, we're seeing him turn the corner not only as a player, but in his
life as well.

..and by the way, Jacoby was NOT a preseason wonder in '08.

I totally agree. Jacoby Jones is a talented athlete who needs to be running track. There is a reason he didn't play Division I will all that talent. He is NOT a football player. Looked like the guy would be a star his rookie year (PreSeason). UNTIL he got HIT. They guy is afraid of contact and football is a contact sport. He looks great against guys who will not be in the league tomorrow but next Sunday I rather not see him on the field.

Jacoby Jones never "fractured" his shoulder and using that injury to explain his mistakes over the last couple of years is a cop-out. Players get hurt all the time and just because you get hurt, that doesn't give you a pass for poor play well over a year after the injury.

He had ONE bad season, dude. It was only his SECOND year! If we cut
every player after just TWO SEASONS, we'd be in bad shape! Root for the
kid to do well, because it'll only be a plus for the Texans if he does.

You sound almost disappointed in the kind of camp he had. How does that
help this team win?

No. I didn't wisp that. You actually proved my argument in my mind with two words of that statement. Hunter Smith. C'mon now. Stunted his growth for two years? Hunter Smith? It's not like Jacoby Jones was even on the IR for two years. It's all about building his confidence? Oh god, Texans... please go get me a football player.

Wow, that's complete crap... How the hell do I sound "disappointed that he had a good camp"? (I'd love nothing more than Jacoby to break out this year, because it would make us a better team....not banking on it though) Stop being a homer, I'm just telling it like it is.....Jacoby Jones has been inconsistent and has made boneheaded plays/mistakes over his career as a Texan and he's had more than just ONE BAD YEAR.

I've seen this guy light up a preseason before.....I've made the mistake and got excited about it before. Sorry, but with Jacoby, it's "prove to me that you can do it when the games matter".....and now I expect him to do more than just return kick, because like you pointed out....it's his THIRD year. He now needs to prove he can be a NFL WR THIS SEASON or it's not worth it to keep him on the roster NEXT SEASON......I'd rather take a flyer on another project WR next year if Jacoby can't prove he can play his position this year.

Lay of jj, anderson returning punts? Really. Let him play out his contract. I think he dislocated that shoulder, NO excuse.

CarrBombed is not disappointed but i am. I'm disappointed that Jones had a good camp. Now I've got to sit here and wait until Rob Birionas gets a hold of him. What then? Bleh. Give me Glenn Martinez or #84. At least i dont really know what to cringe for with them. They haven't really given me a reason yet.

You're right. He's had one bad year, and some CHANGE. If you fail to remember
he missed most of his rookie year DUE to that separated shoulder. He sucked
in preseason '08, and it carried over to the regular season of '08. Now it's
2009, and the START of YEAR THREE. He's had an excellent preseason,
and if '08 flows the same, he should have a similar year to the one he had
in THIS preseason.

I think he's back to his rookie form, but I hope you two guys (Carr Bombed
and Nitro) are just as vocal when the evidence he'd turned his career around
is obvious. If you're silent at that time, then I'll know you're just a couple
of hatas from tha Himalayas.

Let's see how YEAR THREE goes, before you cuss him out. A better target
for your venom is Fred Bennett. He had a great rookie campaign, sucked
last year to the point of getting benched, and has resumed sucking in THIS
preseason. He has NOT shown any sign of improvement, whereas your
whippin' boy has. So, I'll keep an eye out, to see if YOU guys show any
consistency, or are you a bunch of hatas. The jury is out on you guys ,too.

 The guy only missed 2 games his rookie year....and a separated shoulder is not that serious of a injury, no excuse.

Hatas? Dont understand. Do you mean haters? Anyway, Fred Bennett also sucks. What's your point? If they both end up in the probowl, I'll be happy. Not really registering your post too well. Jacoby Jones is a waste of roster space and it's eating at me. The jacoby Jones experiment has been deemed a failure by me. I still like Jacoby Jones. I mean he does run straight to his ma when he scores...

DA returning punts? I'd rather keep Jenkins as the 6th man before handing those duties to Anderson. Though he'll probably be listed as the 4th WR he's probably the fifth best WR on the roster.

Re: JJ, needed a good camp and Preseason to secure a spot and he's done that. Just need that to carry over into the regular season.

As Lucky pointed out, JJ is the 2nd best WR on this team. But, he has yet to live up to his potential on the field. He's got good size with excellent speed, but he hasn't been able to remember where he left his head when the game starts. In my opinion and, it appears in the coaches opinion, JJ may be turning the corner. If he has, then he makes the perfect #2 WR to compliment AJ. I could see Walter moving to the slot position, because he's bigger & stronger than JJ, but not as fast. With AJ & JJ on the outside the Texans should be able to stretch the field more & open the over the middle routes up for Walter, Daniels, & Slaton. It'll be virtually impossible to cover all 5 of those players.

Assuming JJ has turned the corner (and I believe he has), it's my opinion that the bubble list changes to AJ, JJ, Walter, Davis, Anderson. Thus, my original question of who you would rather keep (Anderson or Martinez) would be a legitimate one.

Both Anderson (3 years) & Martinez (4 years) have had a bumpy career & both have had some success. I like Anderson, but it's my opinion that Martinez has looked better this preseason. Much like Davis & Walter before they became Texans, Martinez hasn't been given a lot of chances on the field to show his skills & both of those players have worked out well for us.

The bottom line is, I think Martinez is an upgrade over Anderson. But, that's just my ignorant opinion. :D

I have been a big critic of Jacoby Jones and I admit I'd have parted ways with him last year but I'd have been wrong to do so. He's made a few strides this off-season it appears and he seems to be growing up and settling down a bit. So many of these guys never do and I'm not saying we won't see him backslide a little at some point but he looks like he's on the right track.

I too want to see a defense try and cover AJ and JJ as they both fly down the field, particularly when it's not on an obvious passing down.

Jacoby Jones is NOT the 2nd best WR on this team....it's rediculous to even say that. Kevin Walter is the 2nd best WR on this team and by a very large margin.

Jones is the 2nd best "athlete" at the WR position....but by no means does that bring him remotely close to being the 2nd best WR.

Agreed.

Jacoby had a decent rookie season after a great preseason. He stunk it up last preseason, and during his sophomore year, it showed. This year, it's like he's back to his rookie year, except much more mature and has become a better WR. Besides AJ, he is definitely our "home-run" WR. So quick.

Everybody he talks to out there at Reliant park needs to be telling him the same thing. "See that guy wearing #80? You do every single thing he does and when he's not around here's his cell phone number".

slumps are REAL.
