Last year, the Texans renewed the contract of Eric Winston on the Saturday before the regular season opener against the Steelers. Will we see a similar "September Surprise" with the signing of Daniels and/or DeMeco prior to (or very early in) the 2009 season?

I expect a couple this season. I hope I'm not too surprised by who they go to...

Haven't they stated that they don't extend guys during the regular season? I expect them to get DeMeco but I think it will be just before the Jets game. Or maybe I just hope they will, not sure.

I don't know. It does sound like a rule this team would make and then follow strictly, whether it is the best thing for the team or not. I keep hoping they get away from such restrictions and try to match the speed of the NFL though.

I really hope that the Texans extend Demeco and soon but I expect that they'll let Daniels walk at the end of the season or try a sign and trade. I think this will be Daniels last year as a Texan.

While I hope both of them will be re-signed, I'm pretty much expecting that neither will be. If I understand the uncapped year correctly, the time limit to become an unrestricted free agent goes up to something like 6 years, meaning that both Daniels and Ryans will be considered RFAs next year. So, the Texans can force them to play for cheap, just like with Daniels this year. I get the impression that the Texans FO is pretty tough in their negotiations, and I expect they're going to take full advantage of this to drive a hard bargain (in fact, I expect that this was part of why Ryans and Daniels were doing their mini-holdouts earlier). I don't think that Ryans and Daniels are likely to settle for a low offer (after all, they're both pro-bowlers), and so I expect a stalemate to ensue, that ends up with them getting RFA offers next year.

I hope I'm wrong, though.

i have a question for you contract people out there. if Smith signs OD or Demeco during like week 4 will they get their first years pay docked down on that contract for the first 4 or will they get a check that will give them the pay from the part of the season that they didn't have a contract?

Most contracts are extensions. the player will get bonus money this year, but new regular season contract will start in 2010, not 2009.

They're both under contract, so they would sign an extension. They would get a signing bonus and the new salary starts as soon as this season ends.

Here's the thing. If there's no new CBA, neither DeMeco nor OD will become free agents. The Texans have complete leverage unless they want to go to the UFL.

I would sign OD and Demeco and have someone take a picture of them signing the contract and me waiving to the camera, and then send the picture to Dunta.

I think OD will be left as is to see how Dreesen and Casey do. He can be extended later in the year or allowed to leave. If he has a great season he could franchised ala DR. Ryans is a bit different in my mind. He will be 26 and has had solid but not great seasons. Like DR, he is a fan favorite but Texans may handle him same way. What is interesting to me is how well Bentley seems to be playing at 30. If Dline improves, Cushing is the monster predicted and Diles or Adibi can hold down one side; I could see Texans drafting a MLB.

Would like to see both get extensions at some point through the year. Doubt we'll see either signed before the end of Sept though.

If Daniels can become a more effective blocker and a target in the end zone the guy could be considered elite. Will also be interesting to see If Schaub's health doesn't hold through out the season and we decline the extension clause how big it will be to have a good veteran TE and WR for new QB to throw to.

I think having fully healthy Demeco will make a big difference this year on defense. I dunno if I'd call him elite but, he's still pretty damn good no matter which way you slice it. I think it'd send a great message to our guys in the locker room and those around the league, if you're reasonable the FO will take care of it.

yeah but the idea is to keep THEM happy NOT the wallet. we have the cap room to do it and Smith did it last year with Winston. get DeMeco done then work on OD. i don't buy into this whole idea that if Casey Dressen or Hill show something great they won't bother bringing him back. Smith has preached since he got here that he was going to operate through the draft and retain the stars. OD is a complete player and, unless injury, i expect a longterm extension at the end of the year.

As Mexican Texican said, the Texans are completely in control of the situation. I really don't expect either of them to get a new contract before or during the season with the way the CBA is playing out, however if they do offer one, I expect it would be to DeMeco first.

With that said, I would love for both of them to be offered extensions, as well as Walters and whoever else is (or would be) eligible for free agency or even RFA in some cases, but I just don't think we'll be able to do that.
