Texans should sign Rice.....

....if for no other reason than be a mentor to the vast array of young recievers on our team. The knowledge and experience he has to be able to share with both the recievers and Carr is invaluable. Plus, even at 42, he is still in great shape and still a viable 3rd reciever. And not to mention the chance to have the greatest wide reciever of all time wearing a Texans uniform would provide a little revenue bump. In both ticket sales and in merchandising. I, for one, would love to own a Jerry Rice Houston Texan football jersey.

I would love to hear other's opinions on this matter.
 
While Jerry Rice was the greatest player ever to play the WR position, he provides nothing for the texans, because with JErry Rice, you bring in an old, slow receiver, that still wants to get 30-40 balls, and that wont happen... we have 4 or 5 receivers that are better than jerry right now, there is a difference between being in great shape, and being in football shape... yeah the guy can still work out, whoo hoo... he cant do anyhting on the field, he has trouble getting away from receivers, he doesnt have another gear, he doesnt have the same explosion off the line, he cant jump... and he definatly would not take a vets minimum. as far as i know, the texans do a pretty damn good job of selling tickets anyways... and why would you want a jerry rice jersey, thats like having a Rice Seahawks jersey, no body wants to see that... Rice jerseys should only come in one style, white, red, and gold... thats it, period. A Rice texans jersey just doesnt make any sense, he might not even make the team if we were dumb enough to bring him in
 
Today, as of May 2005 I want to know why anyone thinks signing Jerry Rice adds to your team. I don't get it and I don't think I ever will.

Let's get past this whole "Mentor" idea right up front. Jerry Rice doesn't want to be anyone's mentor. He doesn't want to sign with somebody to be a coach on the field, or the first WR off the bench, or even just to make their locker room a happier place. He wants to be "Jerry Friggin Rice", Greatest living WR legend of all time. He wants to play and he wants to get the ball thrown to him a lot. Not a little, a lot.

Jerry was out of there in Oakland because they were ready to move on. He's out of there in Seattle because they spent half a year with him and they're ready to move on. Jerry Rice has nothing left that can help this team.

I understand all of the amazing things Jerry Rice has done during his career. I know all about that stuff. It's in the past and it doesn't mean anything to the Houston Texans in May of 2005. He could be a standout WR on a losing team somewhere that doesn't have much in the way of weapons and he could add to his already comical stats. Big deal, that ain't where we're going. Signing him could get you a front page story on NFL.com and ESPN.com but what's that really worth? Is it worth bringing in a guy who IMO is not taking his decline all that gracefully and having to watch it play out in our locker room while we're trying to build for 2005 and beyond? Hell no.

Jerry Rice needs to go home and wait for the HOF call. Our #4 is more dangerous than he is right now.
 
The only reason I could see him coming in and us benefitting is through the developement of Mathis being that Rice was drafted out of a small school as well but to be honest with you, I always wanted beat Jerry Rice type teams and I want to do it without him.
 
Agreed thefuture & hervoyel. OK he is a first ballot HOFer, but....... he wants to be a #3 and he wants major PT. He adds nothing to the Texan's. Nothing. He was never a burner and you'd be very diappointed in his preformance vs the two deep zones we face. Probbly end up in Denver. 622 yards and a couple of touchdowns for a season, doesn't rate sacrificing a good young receiver propect for IMHO.

There is a common misconception that players should be mentors and that is what will help this team by teaching so many of the younger players that we have. Well the fact is that we have a first rate coaching staff and that is their job. Because we have been building our team through the draft we do have a lot of younger players but what we need are players that can "bring it" we already have coaches that can and do teach it.

Exactly. People act like every vet around is a mentor and potential coach when most aren't. Just because a guy is a great player doesn't mean they are a good teacher or have any interest in doing it. Aaron Glenn was a good teacher and you could watch him, Dunta, Faggins and Coleman on the sidelines together talking frequently. On the other hand I don't recall ever watching Sharper or Foreman looking like they were mentoring Babin or Peek.
 
Jerry Rice won't be bothered to mentor anyone, and I'm glad you guys notice this too. He has become all about himself over the last two years, and it's a sad site to see.
 
Well the other thing is, this team is trying to get younger and they've shown that in our offseason moves. Getting Rice would just hinder the developement needed for these young guys. Young WR need reps and putting in Rice to the recipe doesn't help that.
 
He would make an excellent receiver coach, however. He knows how to run routes and the importance of running them correctly. He would also have the respect of the receivers. He's done it all and they can't say he doesn't know what he's talking about.

Not everyone who can play can coach. I don't know if Jerry Rice can coach or not but I do know that he hasn't been trying to sign on with a team as a WR coach. He's applying for the job of WR and he's not the best applicant for the position. We're probably bringing 5 guys to camp this year who I'd rather see make the team (and who could probably do more for the Texans) than Jerry Rice.
 
jerry rice is a has been, he doesnt want to coach, he laughs at the idea. his impact here would be nothing, people say we would get articles about his signing, yeah articles asking us what the hell we are thinking for bringing in his over the hill behind! jerry go to the browns, they need players... or even better, except the niners one day contract, and retire a niner, end your embarresment, and just go home, wait a few years, then go to canton and serve up your great speech in what will argueably be one of the most watched Hall of Fame ceremonies ever, simply cuz your there. there is nothing left of jerry rice, nothing but desperation
 
I think that if Rice was smart and wanted to make some good money, he would open up one of those training centers like they have in Arizona. His knowlege on how to take care of your body and train during the offseason would sell in the NFL. He's like Deon, or Herchel Walker, he's an awesome workout machine.
 
geez we just got rid of AG one of the best CB in the leauge because he was getting old, what in ur right mind makes ya think we would get rice a WR alomost 8 yrs older than him ?????

the problem is jerry rice isnt smart. he thinks because he is in shape, he can still play... WRONG!!!! WRONG!!! WRONG!!!! :dangit: ... he thinks he can still play at 70 percent of what he did when he was 27, but the only problem is right now, he is playing like a 80 year old grandma, and doesnt realize he is no longer of service, the game has evolved and jerry will just be remember now as the best WR ever, maybe the greatest player ever... like i said, jerry can go home, take up knitting, and wait for Canton, cuz he is done
 
After reading everyone's replies to this thread b/c when I first read I thought it was a great idea....After consideration though....

1) Its going AGAINST what we are trying to accomplish. Obviously we are trying to get younger not set up a tutoring session.

2) Great players are RARELY make good coaches. They expect everyone to be able to play at their level and of course that's not gonna happen b/c so few are great.

3) Rice is at best a 5 on our squad. We have a nice set of WR's and I think Mathis really needs the reps more than anyone else b/c of his small school setting.

4) Mentoring wise....isn't AJ on our squad? I mean I'm not saying he has the knowledge of Rice but last I checked he's one of the best young WR's in the NFL. He must know a LIL something.

If we signed Rice, he'd instantly be at the top of my list followed by Casserly for signing him.
 
Do you think it would be worth trying to get Jerry Rice being that he can't find a home anymore? I mean, he probably wouldn't ask for much money and is still playing for the love of the game. What do you think?

any money that rice earns is too much money, he can make a dollar and its to much money, he is playing for himself and thats it, no love, if he loved the game he would retire, and not punish us anymore by making us watch him try to play on every team known, he is past his time...when the retirement home known as the raiders thinks your to old, your finished.
