Burress to get 2 years in Prison

NEW YORK -- Former New York Giants receiver Plaxico Burress pleaded guilty to a weapons charge and agreed to a two-year prison term for accidentally shooting himself at a Manhattan nightclub.

Burress pleaded guilty Thursday morning to one count of attempted criminal possession of a weapon, a lesser charge than he initially faced. Under a plea agreement, he agreed to a two-year prison sentence and two years of supervised release.

Burress was indicted earlier this month on two counts of criminal possession of a weapon and one count of reckless endangerment. He faced a minimum sentence of 3½ years if convicted at a trial.

Burress' sentencing is set for Sept. 22.

Wow - pretty stiff (twss). What did Stallworth get for killing a guy?

Edit: after reading the article more thoroughly, I see the actual sentencing hasn't taken place yet. I assume they'll stick to the plea agreement, but I wouldn't be surprised if that turns out to be a bad assumption.
 
Between Burress and Stallworth the sentences seem to be more than a bit out of whack for the offenses. IMO, it would have been more in line if Stallworth got the two years and Burress should have got the 29 days.

Things is if it went to trial the charge carried a minimum mandatory 3 year sentence.
 
Thought of Burress when I came across this piece. Both of them probably graduated (or maybe not) from the same School of Mentally Ill Equipped.


BRISTOW, Okla. - Drew Patterson wanted to protect himself after hearing reports of an fugitive in this northeastern Oklahoma community. He didn't think he would be nursing a sore rear end.

Patterson's .22-caliber pistol, hooked into the waistband of his denim shorts with the hammer pulled back, apparently fired, hitting Patterson in the left buttock Wednesday afternoon.

Patterson, 27, said he suffered "one of my most embarrassing moments" when his gun fired.

"At first, I didn't feel anything at all," said Patterson, who talked readily about the incident Thursday at his parents' Bristow home.

"Then about 30 seconds later, I felt that burning, stinging," he said.

He felt something warm trickling down his left leg and found an exit wound.

Patterson said he walked into his parents' home and said, "Mom, I did something bad."

The gun charge in New York carries a mandatory sentence.

The charge in Florida does not.

Just pointing out that the myriad laws at different locations/levels of the justice system result in decisions that appear out of whack.

You forgot to mention that Stallworth is also on probation for a long time paid restitution to the family and can never ever drive again.

Actually he is being punished for being a dumbass, because if he hadn't of somehow managed to shoot himself nobody probably would have even known he was packing.
 
Prediction? The Giants will SUCK HARD this year exposing Eli Manning as the OVER RATED/OVER PAID FLUKE that he is. Say what you want about Burress, but as long as he was on the field you had to have two guys on him. Over rated Eli loses that...and he's in for a world of hurt.
 
They drafted Nicks 1st and Ramses Barden from Cal Poly in the 3rd. I think the drop-off won't be so much, especially if Barden hones that 6'6'' frame into a redzone threat. Oh yeah and the Giants running game is sweet and the defense is still a monster...

Eli may be overrated but he's certainly got a few cushions to fall on....
 
I haven't kept up with the Stallworth case too much, but I was told the reasoning behind his light sentence was the pedestrian stepped out in front of the car, and a sober driver would have killed the pedestrian as well. Is that at all true?

Yes. There was video of the guy running out into the street mid-block.
 
What a dumb ass. I think two years is a little too much it does not really matter I guess NY law is NY law. He was set to make big bucks this season being in the prime of his career and makes one stupid move to screw it all up. He won't be as good as he is now once he gets out of jail from being away from the game that long and also being two years older. To give up a large contract just for making idiotic mistakes is increditable to me. I look at it like this if these guys would use their brains and think about all that they have in front of them then they would not have to worry about if the laws are crazy or not. His wife is having a child and he won't be there to support her or the child for the next two years now because he went out one night and acted like a jerk. What ashame.

Stupid Plax. Anyone who carries a gun into a nightclub is making some bad decisions. Anyone who allows it to get fired inside a public building is making some bad decisions.

If 2 years helps stops some kid carrying a firearm into such a place then I don't mind the sentence at all.
 
Plaxico fibs about phone call, loses recreation privileges

I tried to tell the Oneida Correctional Facility football team not to give this guy a huge contract, but they didn't listen to me. They went ahead and gave him the record deal -- 200 cigarettes, 50 commissary stamps, 15 sticks of beef jerky, and three (probably) hepatitis-free tattoos, for two seasons.

He'll do something dumb and he won't be able to play for you, I told them. It's happened before. I told them it would happen again. And it did.

According to the New York Post, Plaxico Burress lost his recreational privileges for a month because he lied to a prison guard. He told the guard he had permission to use his cell phone to call his attorney and the guard took his word for it. He had no such permission, and this particular guard doesn't like fibbers.

Now Plax has lost recreation privileges for a month and his cell phone for seven days. Ironic that Plax, while in prison, is allowed to have a cell phone while out here, we're trying to send a guy to prison for buying a cell phone.

Agent: Plaxico Burress ready for return to NFL

Former New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress(notes) is due to be released from prison in June after being incarcerated in a New York prison on gun charges stemming from an incident at a Manhattan nightclub where he accidentally shot himself in the leg.

Now, he's hoping to relaunch his NFL career.

It's unclear which franchise will give him an opportunity, but Burress is expected to draw interest if he's in shape and can knock off years of rust caused by his legal problems.

According to his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, Burress is doing the right things to prepare himself to play again once he's a free man.

"Just visited with client Plaxico Burress He is doing great!" Rosenhaus wrote on his Twitter account. "He is running & lifting weights 5 days a week. He looks in terrific shape. He is in great spirits and is excited to be reunited with his family on June 6th.

"We talked at length about his future in the NFL & he can't wait to get back on the football field in 2011! He is mentally & physically strong right now and is looking forward to the future! He has set some great goals for his life on and off the field. Get ready to see him do some amazing things this year in all areas!"
