Saints Kicker Suspended for Getting a Kick

PFT reported that the kicker was suspended for the first case I've heard of like this..........for Adderall (the equivalent of "Bennies"........pure amphetamine). Wonder if his reason was ADD..........it would be tough finding a med for this condition that is not a stimulant.

Saints kicker Garrett Hartley says he didn't know that Adderall was on the NFL's banned substance list, a slip-up that could cost Hartley his job.

The league has informed Hartley he will be suspended four games for violating its banned substance policy after Hartley tested positive for the prescription stimulant.

What if it is prescribed for a legitimate medical condition?

Found this piece specifically mentioning Adderall:

An athlete may be prescribed a banned drug with the recommendation of a physician, If that is the case, the physician and athlete fill out a TUE -- Therapeutic Use Exemption. Drugs banned by the sports administrations -- WADA, MLB, NFL, NCAA -- may be legitimately used if the athlete files a TUE. For instance an athlete with ADHD could file a TUE for dextroamphetamine use.

If the athlete does not file a TUE while taking the banned drug, he is in violation of the rules, and in fact engaging in drug abuse, with regard to the sport.

This still leaves significant potential for misrepresentation of the diagnosis of ADD/ADHD by athletes for the sole purpose of obtaining an amphetamine prescription legally.

Though I think your point still stands, Hartley was just a bit of a dolt in this case as he took the adderall to stay awake on a long drive from N.O. to Dallas to see his family.

Dumb, but probably won't cost him his job. We re(signed) John Carney to handle field goals till he's ready to come back from a likely 4 game suspension.
