First: what Texan or former Texan on roster or not changed your mind by playing better than you anticipated? Kevin Walter for me.

Second: what current player on Texan roster could radically change your mind by playing better than you expect?

Travis Johnson, Rashad Butler, Rex Grossman

Could have added Okam, JJ

I considered White also, but the comments I have from Kubes is Chris seems to be doing ok replacing Myers. If I remember correctly when asked about how Caldwell was doing, whoever was speaking (I think Kubes) mentioned the mental aspects of directing the Oline and said White was doing well. If White and Caldwell come on strong that will really pump me up on the Oline starters and reserves. I doubt we can have another 16 games without injury.

1. Slaton. I didn't think the little guy had it in him, and I hope it wasn't a fluke.

2. Fred Bennett let's see what a corner back is supposed to do.

1. Mario Williams. When Mario came in and we had all of the Reggie / VY hype and Mario was having problems with his wheels, well, I was a bit discouraged. But as time has gone on, he's really turned it up and has ended up exceeding my expectations. I prayed he would be serviceable after that first season but he's ended up being a beast.

2. Amobi Okoye. Whereas Mario was a high draft pick D lineman that has exceeded my expectations, I'm concerned that Amobi is beginning to smell like a bit of a bust. If his play picks up because of age, system, whatever the reason, I'm thinking it'll change my perception of him.

1-Owen Daniels. I have to admit I wasn't happy when he was picked, but I'm glad I was wrong.

2-Chris Myers. I expected more out of him, probably because I thought he would solidify the C position. Good news is we're starting to get some depth there.

Kris Brown. He was awful for the Steelers the year before we got him, but he has turned into a pretty damned good PK.
I would also have to add Zgonina. How does the old guy keep doing it? He's my age and right now, I can only hobble around on crutches after my latest orthopedic procedure.

I didn't think Chris White would make the roster, but he's already proving me wrong, keeping Caldwell below him.

Kevin Walter - didn't know anything about him before he got here. his Cincy stats didn't impress. but he's turned into a solid #2 WR the past two yrs.
Jacque Reeves - to let cowpie fans/trolls tell it, Reeves was a walking piece of toast. Way worse than Petey Faggins. While he's not Asomugha by any stretch, he was much better than projected. And I think he's still got upside; if he just learns to look back for the ball....

This one is easy for me, Chris Brown. If he survives the whole year and plays like he did early in his career, he could be the power back we need in the redzone and to reliably convert on those 3rd & short plays. I'd bet some of you are surprised he hasn't gone gimpy already. But all I need is one or two completely healthy and productive year(s) from him while we scout the 2010/2011 drafts for his replacement.

I want to expound on Grossman. If he is much better than I expect he should get good FA offers from other teams but that does not benefit Texans. I do not see Smith offering a contract as O has a three year deal. I guess it is possible that Orslovsky could be traded for a needed player or draft pick(s) if Schaub remains healthy and Rex does well. I just don't see Grossman signing a deal to backup Schaub unless Schaub gets hurt this season & RG sees himself as the future starter.

This year gives us a cheap QB trying to resuscitate his career and move elsewhere. Too bad we don't get any pick if he is signed after season by another team. I guess it is possible that RG could play enough during this season that another team desperate for a QB would make an offer to Smith during season. That would be sweet.

Tim Bulman- suprised the heck out of me . he is high energy and causes havoc in the backfield.

Connor Barwin-I hope this guy is worth the hype that he has recieved on this board. If he is half of what people expect of him our d-line should be good. I am rooting for him.

1. Chester Pitts. I thought he would be a nice compliment and plug in piece to our O line. I figured as we upgraded our Oline, he would become a solid backup or perhaps even released outright. 8 years later he became the most dependable player on an O line that has been the butt of many jokes.

2. For me it has to be Frank Okam. The guy has all of the physical tools needed to be a dominating force at the DT position. His size makes his versatile enough to play NT or 4-3 DT. The problem is he shows flashes of ability every so often and just never puts it all together. If he can become that force, our D line becomes NASTY.

1- Slaton is definitely the pick here for me. I didn't think he would be any good (too lite and no breakaway speed) and I couldn't believe we drafted him. I wanted Forte. Now, ironically, I hope he didn't gain too much weight to slow him down. His quickness and ability to see and get through "the hole" are what makes him so good. He's much better than I thought he'd be.

2- GQ/McCain. This is a tougher pick here. I could go with any number of players (Okam, Myers, Okoye, TJ, etc...), but I chose GQ and McCain. Mainly because I had the same reaction I did when we drafted Slaton (WTH are they doing or who the heck is that?). I keep telling myself I have to trust Smith/Kubes during the draft/FA, but I just can't seem to help myself. :)

You just might get what you want. Both seem to be doing well in camp and despite Quin's bone bruise, I have him penciled in to be a very good player.

You know, last year I remember Slaton getting a lot of rave reviews during TC and that's when I started thinking maybe we're on to something. I even drafted him in the last round on a FF league I was in and he turned out to be the most productive RB I had. So if GQ and/or McCain can have a big year for us, then yes, that would be great! :d:

Can rookies really be on this list? They haven't had a chance to show what they've got yet.
