Cushing spends some of his contract $ on... a hyperbaric chamber

DiehardChris

You betcha!
Apparently he's not the only one on the team who owns one...

From Nick Scurfield's blog.

Hey - if the guy thinks it gives him an edge, I applaud this purchase. He hasn't even gotten a house or apartment yet - and the guy's gone out and bought something he thinks will help him with healing faster, improving blood flow, etc.

I think the other is Kevin Walter.
Cushing said that Texans linebacker Kevin Bentley, who also has a hyperbaric chamber, helped him to get one. Texans receiver Kevin Walter also has a hyperbaric chamber. Cushing uses the chamber every day for about an hour in his room at the team hotel near Reliant Stadium.
Add Kevin Bentley to that list.

Another interesting bit from that piece:
After Friday’s practice, Marciano was discussing how far the Texans have come in terms of depth since 2002, when most of his special teams player were street free agents that no other club wanted, when he compared Casey and Barwin to Jim Thorpe – one of the greatest, most versatile athletes in history.

“They can do everything," he said.

They did do just about everything in college. Barwin was a defensive end, tight end and walk-on basketball player at Cincinnati. Casey was a tight end, running back, quarterback and punt returner at Rice – and that was after he played minor league baseball for three years. He is being groomed to be the Texans’ long snapper.

“Casey was a quarterback, so that helps,” Marciano said. “He can throw. You show him the motion. I did it. I snapped a perfect spiral back to him. So he did it, and did the perfect spiral. So if he can do that, he can put two hands on the ball and do it. If you watch on Monday, he'll be snapping for us."
I knew he was a consideration for LS but I hadn't heard anything from the staff on it.

No surprise that Cush would get one. He is very interested in keeping the bod in tip top shape.

I remember a segment on ESPN a few years ago about how Anthony Gonzales (back then with Ohio State, now with Indianapolis) would always get light headed and nauseated during practice, but the problem went away permanently after he started sleeping in a hyperbaric chamber every night. It hangs like a plastic tent over his bed, and he takes it on the road. Maybe that started a trend.

As long as he doesn't have pet monkeys and little boys running around his house, I am cool with that. I think they recently had a clearance special on one at Neverland.

I really appreciate an athlete doing anything to keep his body in tip-top shape but my reaction would have been exactly like Cushing's roommate Connor Barwin.

From the article:

“The first time he brought back to the hotel, I was dying laughing,” Barwin said. “It’s just really funny to see. Half of our hotel room is this bubble or tube or something, and there is this little clear thing. I come in the room and Cushing is lying in this hyperbaric chamber and I just knock on the window and smile at him. But obviously, it’s just another sign to how committed he is to staying healthy and doing the right things, but it’s really funny every time I walk into the hotel room.”

I would have laughed my ass off.

I question the actual effect of this stuff. Professional cyclists did this for years, now no one is doing it anymore. I have a feeling it's all placebo :)

Eh, its his $ and if he wants to spend it on something like this, that is his choice. I do like that his first big purchase was something to help his body recover. Its much better than spending $ on something that will just go up your nose anyway.

Erh.. easy now. I have no problem with him getting it, it's his money, he can wipe his a$$ with all that money for all I care.

I just questioned the effect of the plastic bubble, nothing more :)

Oh sure. I know. I still like the idea that his first big purchase is to help him get ready for games. He still doesn't have a car or a place to live but he bought a hyperbaric chamber. You KNOW this is a guy that eats, sleeps, and breathes football.

You ain't lying - Cushing is hardcore when it comes to taking care of himself for football.

If he puts it up in Reliant, he can live in it! :)

Just got a knee injury, so he has a need for it now. I sure hope it helps it get better quicker.

Hyperbaric oxygen chambers have been around for quite a while. Leonardo de Vinci drew one out, yet never built one. I guess the first to be built would be considered the diving bell first developed in the mid 1600's. Hyperbaric chambers and hyperbaric oxygen therapy have been been used medically since the mid 1800's. It underwent its greatest development by the U.S. Military after World War I. It was finally put into practical use in the 1930's for treating deep sea divers with decompression sickness.

There is a great number of anecdotal stories of performance and healing properties attributed to athletes. However, they essentially remain anecdotal. The medical literature has few controlled studies, and most of those have shown no significant performance enhancement, and very equivocal healing advantage. Yet, a number of well-known athletes swear to at least their healing properties.

If the chambers are not set correctly or are defective, severe sequellae of oxygen toxicity has been reported.........along the lines of "too much of a good thing." Interestingly enough, hyperbaric oxygen has been shown to break down DNA. However, it has been shown to balance this effect with increased DNA production.

You might say, The Michael Jackson Experiment continues to live........as he doesn't.

It's certainly not gonna hurt him...and beyond that, nobody can argue that this guy is gonna do everything within his power to produce for us. I've got absolutely NO problem with that.
