Early 2010 Small School Prospects

rmartin65

Phil Kessel: Nice Guy. Tries Hard.
I have decided to do something new this year. I have had/will have less time this year to go through the hundreds of hours of tapes. So I hope to do one position every two weeks or so, and field any questions about any of the players. This first segment, is quarterbacks.

It is a pretty strong group, by small school standards, headlined by Joe Flacco clone, John Skelton (Rank: 1) out of Fordham. The player with the most name recognition, however, is Appalachian State slasher Armanti Edwards (Rank: 2). Due to his diminutive stature and lack of under center snaps, I project him to be a wildcat QB. He is custom made for that role. Other names you might recognize are Jacksonville State quarterback Ryan Perrilloux (Rank: 8) and Florida A&M quarterback Curtis Pulley (Rank: 9). Perrilloux fall in the rankings is caused by his off the field issues. Meanwhile, Pulley has all the ability in the world, along with a solid off the field character (since he left Kentucky. Multiple drug issues while still at UK). He just has not put it together on the field.

I will be happy to answer any questions about these quarterbacks, or any that are not on the list.

1) John Skelton, Fordham, 6’5” 258 lbs
2605 passing yards, 61.3% completion, 15 TD, 7 INT, 129.66 rating
85 rush yards, 1.5 average, 2 TD

2) Armanti Edwards, Appalachian State, 6’ 184 lbs (Wildcat)
2902 passing yards, 64.1% completion, 30 TD, 9 INT, 170.19 rating
941 rush yards, 4.9 average, 11 TD

3) Trevor Harris, Edinboro, 6’3” 210 lbs
2780 passing yards, 65.9% completion, 26 TD, 6 INT, 161.1 rating
226 rush yards, 3.6 average, 4 TD

4) Noah Shepard, South Dakota, 6’2” 215 lbs

2000 passing yards, 58.5% completion, 15TD, 5 INT, 147.2 rating
645 rush yards, 6.6 average, 13 TD

5) Billy Cundiff, Ashland, 6’2” 209 lbs
3776 passing yards, 67.4% completion, 37 TD, 8 INT, 169.63 rating
272 rush yards, 2.7 average, 4 TD

6) Matt Nichols, Eastern Washington, 6’2” 220 lbs
3293 passing yards, 61% completion, 21 TD, 14 INT, 131.5 rating
83 rush yards, 1.5 average, 3 TD

7) Dominic Randolph, Holy Cross, 6’3” 223 lbs
3838 passing yards, 65.4% completion, 34 TD, 17 INT, 142.42 rating
79 rush yards, 1.2 average, 4 TD

8) Ryan Perrilloux, Jacksonville State, 6’3” 223 lbs
2318 passing yards, 63% completion, 19 TD, 13 INT, 140.9 rating
368 rush yards, 3.1 average, 7 TD

9) Curtis Pulley, Florida A&M, 6’4” 200 lbs
1382 passing yards, 55.1% completion, 17 TD, 5 INT, 107.4 rating
885 rush yards, 7.5 average, 7 TD

10) Sebastian Trujillo, San Diego, 6’3” 222 lbs
2822 passing yards, 66.8% completion, 35 TD, 9 INT, 160.2 rating
33 rush yards, .8 average, 1 TD

What was Perrilloux' off-the-field problem(s)?

They mainly occured during his sophomore season, all though he was a person of interest in a case during his Freshman year, and he hored a lawyer for it.

As a sophomore, he was caught using his brothers ID to go gamble and got in a fight outside of a nightclub (the other 2 teammates there were dismissed).

In 2008 he was kicked off the LSU team for the 2nd time for breaking team rules, and after he was re-instated he failed a drug test, and skipped team meetings. He was kicked off for good following that.

Yike, that's too many infractions to be considered for theTexans!

Check out Bradley George from Texas State, he's 6,6 with some mobility and a gun. The Downside and the reason why he won't be drafted is that he's 27.

George is a legit player. Talent wise, I would put him in the top 10. But his age and lack of upside is what is ultimately going to keep him out of an NFL camp.

Here are the runningbacks, earlier than I expected.

The small school runningback class is rather weak this year. Joique Bell is the top prospect by far, as he has the size and speed to become a premier runner in the league. Coker played for Tennessee before he was dismissed after multiple failed drug tests. He know plays for FCS power Hampton. There really is not much left to say about the rest of the group.

rmartin, any idea why Randolph was picked over Skelton in the Pre-season All-Patriot League Poll ?

Randolph has put up better stats through his career. He is a better college player than Skelton, and at the moment a better quarterback. Skelton has much better NFL potential, and I see him as a Flacco type QB. Obviously not rising to the first round, maybe the 3rd.

The small school wide receiver class is very strong, the strongest of the small school ranks. I would guess that at least 6 of these guys get drafted next April. Andre Roberts (1) is the stud of the group. Lighting quick and versatile, he should go by round four. The quickest of the bunch would be Kelton Tindal (3) from Newberry. There have been reports of sub 4.2 speed, with a confirmed 4.22 time the pro day this spring. What prevents him from being an early round pick is that he is, at the moment, a one trick pony. If he can work on his route running, look out. Lateral agility is also a concern, as in the games that I have watched he seems to be more of a north-south player. This group also boasts some prototypical red zone threat players in Colgate's Simonds (2) and Harvard's Luft (8). Both players are 6'6" and are superb athletes. Simonds especially can move well, it looks like he has sub 4.5 speed. Two of the hardest players to place are Elon's Terrell Hudgins (6) and Kenyon College's Harry von Kann (9). These two players might be more suited for TE in the pros, but have shown an ability to play despite pedestrian forty times. von Kann has made some spectacular catches through his career, but as a D3 player without blazing track times, he is unlikely to be drafted. Whomever grabs him in free agency will be getting a football player.

1) Andre Roberts, The Citadel, 5’11” 190 lbs
90 receptions, 1268 yards, 14.1 average, 14 TD
24 punt returns, 461 yards, 19.2 average, 3 TD
1 kick return, 19 yards

2) Pat Simonds, Colgate, 6’6” 223 lbs
65 receptions, 1136 yards, 17.5 average, 9 TD
10 punt returns, 30 yards, 3 average
0 kick returns

3) Kelton Tindal, Newberry, 6’3” 195 lbs
39 receptions, 745 yards, 19.1 average, 6 TD
1 punt return, 14 yards
5 kick returns, 76 yards, 15.2 average

4) Ricardo Lockette, Fort Valley State, 6’3” 200 lbs
19 receptions, 277 yards, 14.6 average, 3 TD
0 punt returns
8 kick returns, 222 yards, 27.8 average, 1 TD

5) Marc Mariani, Montana, 6’ 185 lbs
69 receptions, 1308 yards, 19 average, 15 TD
23 punt returns, 363 yards, 15.8 average, 2 TD
25 kick returns, 572 yards, 22.9 average

6) Terrell Hudgins, Elon, 6’2” 234 lbs
86 receptions, 1116 yards, 13 average, 10 TD
0 punt returns
0 kick returns

7) Aaron Boyce, Eastern Washington, 6’3” 210 lbs
63 receptions, 917 yards, 14.6 average, 10 TD
0 punt returns
0 kick returns

8) Matt Luft, Harvard, 6’6” 225 lbs
54 receptions, 914 yards, 16.9 average, 5 TD
0 punt return
0 kick return

9) Harry von Kann, Kenyon College, 6’3” 230 lbs
64 receptions, 847 yards, 13.2 average, 10 TD
7 punt returns, 23 yards, 3.3 average
29 kick returns, 678 yards, 23.4 average, 2 TD

10) Donald Jones, Youngstown State, 6’2” 210 lbs
31 receptions, 510 yards, 16.5 average, 7 TD
0 punt returns
0 kick returns

I'd like to hear more about the two 6'6 guys!

Simmons is definitely the better of the two. He has very solid hands, and underrated athleticism. He would be a great red zone threat.

I kind of worried about putting Luft on the list. He had a NFL prospect QB throwing to him, and with his height that gives him a huge advantage at the FCS level. That said, he has a pro ready body and solid hands. I dont see him being drafted, but he should be an UDFA, and stick on a Practice Squad.

Here are the top 5 of the fullbacks and the top 5 of the tight ends. Both are very weak.

Fullbacks
There are two potential NFL players. Harbor (2) is more of an HBack type player, as he plays TE at Missouri State. McClintock (1) is the prototype blocking FB. The man loves hitting. Casey (3) was a top 5 FB prospect last season before a knee injury ended his season.

1) Bobby McClintock, Portland State, 5’10” 235 lbs

2) Clay Harbor, Missouri State, 6’3” 240 lbs

3) Joe Casey, Rhode Island, 5’10” 215 lbs

4) Jordan Paula, South Dakota State, 6’3” 244 lbs

5) Dre Gibbs, Western Illinois, 5’10” 225 lbs

Tightends
Again, most likely only 2 NFL players on this list. Sicko (1) is a better pass catching TE, but has a lack of size that will keep him from being drafted. Overbay (2) has the size to be a mauling TE, but has questionable hands. He reminds me of Kevin Boss, the NY Giants TE that came from Western Washington. Mike Jones (5) played OT last year, but is being moved to TE. He is athletic, and has upside.

1) Scott Sicko, New Hampshire, 6’3” 230 lbs

2) Nathan Overbay, Eastern Washington, 6’5” 270 lbs

3) Sean Bunevich, Duquesne, 6’3” 230 lbs

4) Dan Beaudin, Montana, 6’4” 252 lbs

5) Mike Jones, West Virginia State, 6’5” 270 lbs

On an unrelated note, here is an interesting bit about my favorite small school player in the draft, Citadel receiver Andre Roberts.

There are only a few videos of Simonds on the net, but it looks like the guy is pretty fluid at 6'6

He can flex his hips and turn quite well on the comebacker.
Looks good going up for the ball over the DBs.

......

Which on is the guy who runs sub 4'3
Andre Roberts?

What does Casey have to bring to the table?

Roberts is the best WR of the bunch, and probably the top small school prospect. Kelton Tindal out of Newberry runs a sub 4.3, with reports of a sub 4.2 at 6'3" 195 lbs. If he can become a more polished receiver (mainly route running, lateral agility) then he could be an NFL star.
What does Casey have to bring to the table?

Casey was a very versatile player. A good runner, and solid receiver. I dont see him doing much in the pros, unfortunately. He lacks the speed to be a runningback and the bulk to be a fullback. He would top out as a special teams player.

The Defensive Line

Defensive Ends
The defensive end lineup is fairly solid, 2 draftable players in this bunch. Austen Lane (1) has a body type/athleticism combo that reminds me of a very poor mans Mario Williams. Ruffin (2) is a a good player that should be drafted in the 7th.

1) Austen Lane, Murray State, 6’6” 258 lbs

2) James Ruffin, Northern Iowa, 6’4” 264 lbs

3) Danny Batten, South Dakota State, 6’4” 252 lbs

4) Mykol Gardiner, Duquesne, 6’3” 255 lbs

5) Adrien Tracy, William and Mary, 6’3” 245 lbs

6) Taylor Scott, Central Arkansas, 6’4” 270 lbs

7) Kyle Harrington, Massachusetts, 6’4” 285 lbs

8) Kevin Linehan, Weber State, 6’3” 255 lbs

9) Christian Anthony, Grambling, 6’4” 245 lbs

10) Marcus Crump, St. Augustine, 6’6” 240 lbs

Defensive Tackles
This years small school DT's are athletic, and maybe the strongest group on defense. Again, 2 prospects are draftable, Minnesota State's Randy Earl (1) played DE last year, but is sliding inside this year. He has potential to be a solid pass rushing DT, or a good 3-4 DE.

1) Randy Earl, Minnesota State, 6’3” 282 lbs

2) Ko Quaye, South Dakota State, 6’1” 295 lbs

3) Brandon Gilbeaux, Delaware, 6’4” 272 lbs

4) Anthony Williams, Appalachian State, 6’1” 286 lbs

5) Trey Jacobs, Liberty, 6’3” 295 lbs

6) Mychal Savage, Youngstown State, 6’2” 305 lbs

7) Darryl Jackson, Kean, 6’1” 348 lbs

8) Justin Lawrence, Morgan State, 6’ 298 lbs

9) TJ Raymond, Northeastern State, 6’2” 334 lbs

10) Jimmy Saddler-McQueen, Texas A&M Kingsville, 6’3’ 298

I saw an article about the Texans staff heading up to watch Colorado State practice. They have a pretty good line with some good players G Shelley Smith and C Tim Walter. They also mentioned a Dion Morton WR and Klint Kubiak S. Other teams in attendance the Vikes, Broncos, and Colts.

The linebackers

OLB
One, maybe 2 draftable players in this bunch. Most of them are actually DE's right now, that lack the size and have the athleticism to play OLB in the pros.

1) Larry Hart, Central Arkansas, 6’ 242 lbs

2) JT Gilmore, Western Oregon, 6’4” 256 lbs

3) Tim Knicky, Stephen F. Austin, 6’4” 236 lbs

4) Matt Marcorelle, Delaware, 6’2” 245 lbs

5) Ryan Shotwell, Cal Poly, 6’3” 248 lbs

6) Chris Brown, Sam Houston State, 6’2” 220 lbs

7) Dane Fletcher, Montana State, 6’1” 242 lbs

8) Arthur Moats, James Madison, 6’ 248 lbs

9) Cody Dowd, Northern Arizona, 6’4” 250 lbs

10) Mark Szmanski, Robert Morris, 6’2” 254 lbs

ILB
Not much to say about this group, likely none will get drafted. The top half should be called shortly after the draft, and the next couple should get into camp as a FA.

1) Chris Johnson, South Dakota State, 6’2” 232 lbs

2) Jacque Roman, Appalachian State, 5’11” 240 lbs

3) Terrence Gaston, Northeastern State, 6’3” 230 lbs

4) Wes McDermont, Morehead State, 5’9” 236 lbs

5) Hakeem Yakubu, Olivet, 6’ 240 lbs

6) Jake Lewko, Pennsylvania, 6’1” 237 lbs

7) Prince Hall, Central Washington, 5’11” 235 lbs

8) Andrew Yezzi, Rowan, 6’1” 230 lbs

9) Brandin Jacobs, Southern Illinois, 5’11” 230 lbs

10) David McBride, Western Kentucky, 5’9” 234 lbs

What happened to Skelton?

I was not able to watch any games all weekend, it was terrible. I have been fixing up the house I am going to live in next school year. I talked to a couple friends that watched both Fordham and Holy Cross, and they said Skelton still looked better. I will see if I can watch some film.
