Texans 3rd round pick via Saints

Now the dust has settled from the 05 draft, all that remains is to sign the players to cap friendly, incentive layden contracts then watch them actually play in Texans uniforms :highfive:

The bonus to this deal of course and the reason for this topic is the 3rd round pick aquired from the N.O. Saints. Does anyone else feel that the Texans are going to be better next year and also better than the Saints? with a .500 record the Texans would be selecting somewhere around 18-22. but as for the Saints I could see them struggling & really efforting to fall off maybe even a top 10 pick, which would mean of course their 3rd round pick would be a much higher selection than the Texans own 3rd rd pick.

The Texans have done some of their best drafting in the 3rd & 4th rounds. the high 3rd round pick for instance has garnered some of the Texans best young players including RB Vernand Morency (#73) OLB Antwan Peek (#67) OT Seth Wand (#75) OG Fred Weary (#66). the Texans high 3rd in 04 was used to aquire Jason Babin. If you include all players drafted in the 3rd to 4th rounds by the Texans it becomes clear this is where you find not only depth but starters as well. C Drew Hodgdon (#151) S Glenn Earl (#122) QB David Ragone (#88) RB Domanick Davis (#101) DT Charles Hill (#83) RB Jonathan Wells (#99).

By trading down & still getting Travis Johnson the Texans addressed a primary need, added talent to the line & more flexability for next years draft and possibly a future starter for the Houston Texans :homer:

There is a suplimental draft coming up and we might be looking to pickup someone in that draft with that pick. I believe the 1st priority, however, goes to teams who won 6 games or less. There is a defensive player from SC who just announced he's coming out for that draft.

as far as that player- SC DT to enter supp draft... Southern California junior DT Manual Wright reportedly has decided to apply to the NFL for to enter the summer supplemental draft. Wright did not participate in spring practice this year as he tried to get his academics in order. Wright had been expected to help replace graduated DTs Shaun Cody and Mike Patterson. The 6-6, 290-pound Wright had 23 tackles, including 6 for loss as a reserve last fall.

GBN-

the only question i have about him is he never started. he was a bench warmer. Seriously i think he should of stayed and came out next season as 1st rounder. We have up a #2 for hollings i believe. Do you feel that a #2 or one of our #3's is good enough for a player that has never started.

I say this Morency was a bad pick with our needs being as they were. I would have preferred the LB out of Notre Dame or the Guard out of UVA.

Not saying don't add depth at RB but a 25 yr old?

Some would say the same thing about this years #2 overall - at the very least he played second fiddle to Caddy. And our top pick was not a college
starter until his senior year.

i just think he seriously hurt his draft quality and valuable experience by leaving early. I think if any one offers over a 4th in the supplemental they are giving too much. If he had stayed 1 more year and started every game (i know he started 2) but still thats added experience.

I dont think we should use the pick on this supp draft honestly. Next year's draft though a long way away looks like it could turn out to be fairly deep regardless of the season the aints have. Maybe then we can ACTUALLY address our OL with more than a 5th round pick.

the Texans should retain both 3rd rd picks next year. the N.O. pick should be very close to the B.O.Y.S. pick this year (#73). if Travis Johnson is for real & a Bull In A China Closet in the trenches, trading down to get him & a quality player with the extra pick will help Texans forgive passing on the other Johnson :brickwall

Actually the 3rd has been mediocore at best.

Charles Hill- not even in the league
Fred Weary-slow to develop as even solid back-up much less a push for McKinney.
Seth Wand- started a year too early as develpoment LT, hoping for better in 2005.
Dave Ragone-3rd stringer sent to Europe to save his career.
Antwan Peek-exciting, undeciplined fast player who has made maybe 1 and 1/2 more good plays than Shantee Orr, but is the next ROLB experiment.
Verand Morency-similiar back to DomDavis (almost a size/speed twin)

Actually, this group falls right on with the 30% (33%), but the two starters are probably the biggest question marks on the roster, playing @ arguably the most important positions not named QB. (LT and primary pass rusher)

4th round has been excellent.

Wells-started one year, but has develpoed into willing special teams player and back-up, not a true power guy despite size
DomDavis-drafted to be a returner, but is a solid (not spectacular) NFL starting RB, best value for position drafted in the Texans short history.
Glenn Earl-did not look lost at SS, despite being thrown to the wolves after Brown was terrible.
Jerome Mathis-very fast draft pick probably KR and hopefully eventual role is as the straighline speed guy.

I wouldnt get to attatched to that 3rd round pick. CC likes to throw them around like candy.

At first, when we receive the pick, its a good pick. Then when we toss it away, its a pick that only has a %30 chance of being a starter.

So I wouldnt bank on having it next draft.

Think you have the idea couched in more negative language than i would, but Casserly value's EXTRA picks differently than most fans(and many NFL organizations). Casserly uses them to acquire talent he would not be able to normally get. Notice that the Texans always have an extra pick. for Casserly that is to get better bodies, not more bodies.

I can appreciate both veiwpoints, cannot change or impact Casserly's moves so don't even try. just do the research follow the NFL draft & College Football hopeful of finding that diamond in the rough who transitions into the organization to become a successful team member. when Casserly makes his move then its over & time to move on. as it stands right now the Texans have two 3rd round picks, at least one of which could be very attractive in a number of different scenario's. The point being if Travis Johnson becomes the interior lineman as the Texans expected trading down three spots & aquiring a high 3rd rd pick is just extra frosting on the cake :highfive:

I dont mind us acquiring extra draft picks but its not ALWAYS necessary to trade down to get them. I like this one in our case b/c truth be told I wasn't crazy about any of the players available when it was time for us to pick outside of DJ and T Davis but I knew our most pressing matter was OL and I just wasn't feeling Barron who was apparently the only worth drafting at that spot (who ended up falling to 19.)

Without that extra 3rd though we would have had only 1 pick on day 1 this year since we made the Buc trade. I just hope we use it more wisely than drafting a RB when we need OL.

The P-Buc trade probably would not have happened if we did not already have the extra pick...if you waiting on Casserly to draft _______ because _______ position is our highest (perceived) need then you have not paid any attention to the 4 drafts that he has conducted with the Texans.

If you are referring to Justin Tuck he was a DE 'tweener' at ND who would have been a LB here. I was also hoping to see him in a Texan uniform. The cowboys got a steal last year with Julius Jones from ND. The Giants got a steal this year with Tuck.
Talent at ND very under utilized the last couple of years. :embarrass
