Reasons The Texans Won't Make The Playoffs

Alright now...before everyone starts lining up to kick my arse, I am not hatin' or non-believin'.

Things can and always do go wrong. What are some of your concerns?

One for me is Antonio Smith. I think he is overrated. Can the rookie Barwin really help them?

I wonder how much better they'll be at LB. Cushing is a rookie too. I never thought Diles could be a starter on most teams.

Will 23 show up in time to serve them well? Him skipping any games will suck.

Will one of the RBs in camp step up to be a competent back to go with Slaton? I still don't like the thought of Slaton trying to be an every down guy.

There are a ton of reasons.

1 - The Texans are a horrible road team. I thought they had a breakthrough with Green Bay last year, but then they gave it all back and lost at Oakland.

2 - The division isn't going to be any easier. I don't think the Colts are going to have a dropoff because of their offseason turmoil, and I think people that think the Titans are a fluke are crazy. Jags can't really get much worse.

3 - I'm worried about the RB situation. I LOVE Slaton, but I honestly don't think he'll hold up to a full load all season - and what do we have as the top option for his backup right now? A guy who is a mortal lock to get injured.

There are many more reasons... but the horrible road play is by far the biggest one, IMO.

Well, the injury thing applies to EVERY team. I think the OP was specifically asking about why the Texans won't make the playoffs.

1. The Defense - The whole defense has to play well, I won't point to any one player or unit of the defense but it has to be a collective effort. This defense needs to be in the top 15 for us to make the playoffs.

2. Matt Schaub - If we don't have him for 16 games then I don't see us as a playoff team.

3. Road wins - Assuming we go 6-2 at home again (we've done it two years in a row), we'll have to go atleast 4-4 on the road this year. A .500 road record is acceptable and anything less could mean no playoffs.

I think about this a lot and I think it all comes down to two simple things if the Texans don't make the playoffs:

1. There is a God.
2. and He's isn't happy with me.

Things point to SMith and Cush being real good in this defense and I think one of the RB will push Slaton out of the featured back role. This will benefit Steve who will remain a huge positive. I think Brown will remain basically injury free and will have good avg but not many yards. Will be successful as 3rd down back.

Maybe another 8-8 season beause of the bunch of rookies with raw talent who probably won't help much untill they have a few seasons under their belt and become vets. Matt Probably will miss some games that is going to be the key as always. Winning road games is another question mark for the Texans. But last season win that Rosencopter game and two more road games maybe three give or take you'd probably be in the playoffs at 11-5 or 12-4.

The biggest key for us, and the rest of the NFL, is going to be turnovers. IMHO, THAT is one of the most telling stats kept. If we create more than we lose, I see us being a playoff team. That falls mostly on Schaub, the DL and DB. If we get the aggressive style we've been promised, the DL should pressure the oppossing QB into more mistakes. If Schaub can stay healthy and make wise decisions, his turnover ratio should drop dramatically.

Red zone efficiency and 3rd downs on both sides of the ball will also be telling.

We have a winner! Rep your way

Turnovers have been KILLING us for the past three years. It was and continues to be the single most aggravating thing about the Texans: How much we shoot ourselves in the foot by turning the ball over. And until we fix that issue - both minimizing what we give and maximizing how many we create - we will not be a consistent playoff team.

I hope part of this new defensive "aggressiveness" is that the first guy secures the ball carrier and the second, third, and fourth guys strip the ball.

OK. I'll drink some Hateraide & play along for this one. Here are my top reasons why the team wouldn't make the playoffs (pessimists view).

1) D-Line play -- Aside from Super Mario, there is really no-one on that line that has lived up to their potential. Antonio Smith was brought in to anchor the left side of the D-line, but he will move inside on 3rd down and Barwin is an unkown commodity after playing only one year on the D-line. To this point TJ, Okoye, etc have not truly lived up to their potential.

2) Cushing is a two down player that struggles in pass situations. The LB play will remain largely the same in spite of investing a 1st round pick at the position. They will do fairly decent against the run, but struggle with the pass.

3) The DB corps remains very suspect with no real top level talent help coming via the draft or free agency. Dunta was average last year according to the sabermetrics & teams certainly didn't have any qualms about throwing at Reeves even though the numbers say he performed better than DR. Our safety play is mediocre with no real difference makers there like elite defenses seem to have (Ed Reed, Troy Polamalu, etc.) With the line play basically the same, expect us to give up lots of yards through the air and with the new aggressive approach, look for Brady, Manning, & others to pick the secondary apart when we blitz.

4) Lack of depth at running back. Slaton has turned into a real find, but short yardage aint really his strong point and we don't have a whole lot of upside behind him. Chris Brown can't seem to stay healthy and we've got a bunch of other guys that no-one would recognize on the street if you saw them.

5) Matt Schaub's glass chin errr legs. Matt has been susceptible to injuries and if he goes down for a stretch, I think you can pretty much stick a fork in us.....cause we'd be done.

6) Kubiak's Brain Farts -- Kubiak's game management late in close tussles often leaves a bunch to be desired. A few less mental errors from the head man could mean the difference when matched up against good teams that are well coached.

7) Brown doesn't deliver -- Brown had a baptism by fire last year and while he seems to be good in the run game, he struggled in the pass game. He's got the job solo this year, so when he starts to struggle, there aren't any rescue ladders.

I don't know if that was cathartic or will induce nightmares for the next month, but those would be the reasons I think we might miss the playoffs....aside from the easy ones (turnovers, rash of injuries, tough division, etc.)

Geez... couldn't you at least wait for the season to start before pissing on everyone's hopes and dreams?

What a downer.

I've seen 7 years of them not making the playoffs, I think I already know how they won't. I'm waiting to see how they WILL!!!

Mario or Schaub or Slaton blowing out their knees in pre-season.

How's that for a downer?

It's the reason why making W-L predictions is so stupid. You can't predict injuries, and injuries to key players make all the difference in the world.
