HMMMMMM.....Honestly, I'm getting kind of tired of this guy. He plays too inconsistently and there's always SOMETHING negative going on with him. Almost like a black cloud following him around. If he hets outplayed by Robinson and Okam, is it really worth it to keep him around with 1st round pay? This new D scheme should fit him a lot better, so I don't want to write him off before TC even starts but IMHO, he's just about played out his string in Houston. A bad (negative impact on the team in the locker room?) attitude coupled with nagging injuries AND mediocre play just shouldn't be acceptable to a Texans team that needs exceptional play from the DL this year to reach their goals.

When has Travis been a negative impact in the locker room? I haven't heard anything about that...

Also because of this I really hope DelJuan gets more focus during TC. He's the underdog I'm pulling for to become a starter someday.

I'm curios how long this will put him out? Unfortunate in his contract year. I expect we could bring in yet another DT to compete in camp.
With the classic sports hernia repair, some professional athletes are placed on a 3 week "fast track" rehab program to try to get them back on the field ASAP. The "safe" and classic rehab recommended for most patients, though, is 6-9 weeks. In the case of a football lineman specifically, where there is constant severe straining to perform their duties, the latter regimen would be the only prudent route to pursue.

How true. And an uncomfortable reminder about how a whole season can turn on the health of a key player. TJ is mildly important at best (actually many of us think he should just be cut outright), whereas AJ is basically vital to the Texans hopes to get into the playoffs in 2009.

nobody mentions Shaun Cody? does anyone realize regardless of Travis Johnson status in a strange twist of fate, when both came out in 05 Shaun Cody, USC was rated higher by most scouts (ourlads ranked Cody #2 DT in the draft Travis #7th) then this offseason the Texans aquired him on the cheap, unrestricted free agent in fall out from Detroit (2nd rd. #37). Not saying he's the answer but the Texans still have decent depth behind Deljuan. Maybe Okam can also step up as his conditioning suggests to challenge Robinson & Cody for more playing time. :texflag:

Ah, Football!
I know I'm probably one of very few on the board that thinks TJ get's a lot of unwarranted criticism. Is he worth a #1 draft pick? Probably not, but I can't blame the player for being drafted where he was. Is he our best DT? No, but he's not our worst.

I've criticized TJ over his work ethic and how he often stands up while taking on blockers, but I like his demeanor while he's on the field. He might not have won his starting position back this season, but I think he should, and will, be in the rotation. I like his attitude.

IMO, Okoye was drafted even higher than TJ and has yet to play better than TJ with the exception of a few games his rook season.

In the end, I hope TJ rehabs well from his surgery and is able to get on the practice field before the end of camp.

get rid of this bum......why does everyone give this guy a pass????

1st round underacheiver = check

Has been handed the starting position and done squat with it = check

never shows up to OTA's or TC with his game face on meaning in shape ready to ball for his life = check

seriously whats the point in keeping this guy???......please explain so I can see the light?

doesnt it seem all to odd with this guy that he decides to get these freak injuries right around TC time????

Last year he got married right before TC and had this pelvic whatever it was.....just in time to miss some time

Now the guy decides to have surgery just days before camp is set to start..........odd timing IMHO. A real team guy who knows he wants to be part of something special and make good with his team would have had this procedure done in January to be fully recovered and ready to go with all his teamates in july

I dont know I could be over reacting as I have been known to do.....but I am just not liking this guys patterns

I assume Travis's case is not as severe but this is the same chronic problem that Joppru had during his time with us correct? Man, that brings back some memories. Hopefully Travis had a successful surgery and can shake this off in less than two to three... years.

As far as the lineup goes this should definitely give Deljuan and the others an opportunity and it looks very likely that we will have at least 1 new starter at DT by the opener. That is pretty exiting news to me and who knows, hopefully TJ can come back and still be a solid rotational contributor.

Elective Hernia surgery just to avoid training camp? I'm guessing you haven't had hernia surgery before.

The timing of this is VERY suspect (yet again), but if it gives the guys who need more reps in TC to sort out the depth chart, I can definitely live with it.

TJ can be a beast when he wants to - the question has always been how OFTEN does he WANT to?

the man said out his own mouth this has been a problem for years.....so being that u know u have this problem....why have the surgery 2 weeks before camp......as opposed to 2 months ago???

I am not saying he doesnt need the surgery....my question is the timing of the surgery.

doesnt matter anyway,

I think TJ plays well in games, but my unwarranted impression of him is poor work ethic. It seems like he wants to get out of working hard in the offseason, and he probably doesn't want to do a lot of work to get better. I get the impression that he is a slacker that plays well but could play a lot better if he worked like a Mario for example. I hope he gets better soon because I'm looking forward to seeing how well he plays when he's a little more motivated in a contract year.

Well, it's not to avoid training camp. The man is in the last year of his contract and has a lot to prove this year. I'm sure he's trying to get right for the season in order to get a payday next year. We can all agree that he has been a disappointment as a 1st round pick and hasn't been among the best off-season trainers... I just don't know why that makes him the target for foolish consipiracy theories.

TJ is a DT assigned to stop the run in our D scheme as we have seen it. Off season goal after last season was to find players to stop the run. IMO he has not earned his contract. We do not have a starter type DT as of today.

Mr. Johnson even if picked third round should be a solid back up by now and many fans would not be surprised if he is not on roster if evaluation is made on skills and not cap hit.

we can debate it back and forth all day but the fact remains its all everyones opnion at this point

I think the timing is suspect....you on the other hand dont...nuff said and we will leave it at that

but for the record i do believe he wants to play in the season during games.....I am sure he does as it is a contract year

but contract year has nothing to do with TC.......I just think the guy doesnt want to get in that houston heat and get better with his teamamtes. I am almost sure he will come during the season and try to play. bottomline I think is work ethic rivals one of the worse I have seen. And IMHO I think thats what holds this young man from being the player we all know he could be. I think thats the most frustrating part in all this

The move is about par for Travis Johnson's career as a Texan. So I can't say I'm really surprised. I am however, excited about Robinson and Cody being able jump a notch up, especially Robinson.

I guess we were all hoping that maybe being in a contract year, the increased talent and depth on the DL, and a DL coach who has a history of getting guys playing upfield would prove light a fire under TJ. Still same 'ol TJ.

I think the reason he's had so many chances is you always want your first rounders to succeed because wehter you picked them or not it reflects on the franchise. Not to mention the salary dumped into them. Even prior to this I'm not so sure a lot of people were expectinga big jump in production from Travis, I think those expectations are on Amobi. If he doesn't take off this year I'm almost expecting us to look at another 1st round DT.

Did you read the article by Mark Berman? TJ said he went to a specialist in St. Louis to determine the cause of his injury issues and that is when the sports hernia was discovered and surgically repaired three weeks ago!
This is not that uncommon and it is a good thing that it is taken care of now.
He should miss no more than the first 2 or 3 weeks of TC. And, he will be more fit than in any of the past few years.

Give a guy a break for being human!

First off, if the Texans were counting on this guy going into this season, which were not, we would be in serious trouble.

Secondly, fellas, I had this surgery a year ago. I can STILL feel the discomfort of the surgery to repair the hernia. I felt shots of pain for months following this procedure. He'll be on pain meds alone for atleast until training camp. Horrible thing to happen to him in his contract year cause he could be headed for PUP and if he has a poor season, maybe out of the league.

Thank you for bringing this up. Here is the link to the original article in which Johnson talks about his situation:

http://www.myfoxhouston.com/dpp/sports/nfl/090721_texans_dt_johnson_surgery

as you mentioned it was discovered that he had a sports hernia after he went to a specialist. prior to that it was thought to be multiple injuries in his mid section. This specialist put it all together and discovered that he needed this surgery. That doesn't sound like he planned this so he could get out of work.

From the Berman story:
It's been a big burden," Johnson said. "I had to get a lot of stuff done to it as far as shots just to be able to get out of the bed every morning.

"Now that we finally got some answers, as far as what's going on and got it somewhat fixed I think, that's a great thing."

Johnson said his condition contributed to his inability to stay healthy.

"My body started breaking down with the hamstrings and the groins," Johnson said. "Everything was over-compensating for the fact that I had a hernia.

"It just took its toll on my body. I went to go see a specialist in St. Louis and that's what it came out to be."
Bergman mentions in the article that several injuries that relate to this have bothered Johnson for the past few years.

It is entirely possible that getting his body right could help both his work on and off the field. According to Johnson, he's been in considerable pain for some time.

I don't understand why some think he's this locker room cancer, money grubbing flop. It seems to me that he's the dog in this organization from a fan perspective. His draft position is only one factor. He's played arguably out of position his entire time with Houston. He's played with what we now know is a cronic injury for much of his time as well.

I remain optimistic that he can be a solid contributor. I think if healthy he could be a key member of the rotation. We'll have to wait and see. At least many of you can feel good that this may be his last year as a Texan. I hope for his sake that it is. I would rather play for a team who's fan base appreciates me.

 What the heck has there been to appreciate? The guy gets dogged out by his own coach in press clips and you expect fans to give him a "attaboy" when he's done practically NOTHING during his time here?

While he did have a injury that does require surgery, TJ has done NOTHING here that gives him any kind of benefit of the doubt....maybe if he kept himself in better shape he wouldn't have had this injury or other nicks, strains, and pains, instead he showed up out of shape year after year.

not just from this one time and this st louis hernia thing......I hear the "he went to a specialist 2 weeks ago" arguement....but jeez its been years and just decide to go 2 weeks a go......why not a month or 2 ago???

Why did our team doctors not pick up on this? Why did he have to see a specialist to figure out that he had a sports hernia, are they that hard to diagnose?

Because that's what ALL Houston sports team doctors do.......they misdiagnos and miss finding injuries all together. I've simply have gotten used to it by now.... Does anybody remember the serious injury they finally discovered with Mathis (I forgot what it was) after weeks of giving him grief like he was just loafing it.

Maybe it's a "boy who cried wolf" thing......players who constantly complain about injuries, they simply stop taking them serious anymore.

Hell, that kinda crap goes back to J.R. Richard. The Houston sports doctors mis-diagnosed his STROKE! You would think in a town that brags about having a world-class med center we could do better than some of these quacks that our pro teams have hired.

I'd be curious to see just what a healthy T.J. would be like. I'd like to find out that - kinda like Mario and his foot problems - he's hell when he fully healthy. I'd hate for him to be wearing a different uniform when I found that out.

If he still under-performs after he's "finally healthy" then we kick him to the curb. We have all season to evaluate.

If he's been dealing with a cronic injury for several years it could be an explanation for his conditioning. I'm not saying it is. I'm saying it could be. I'm just making the argument that there could be other factors than the party line that he's a bum. It's entirely possible that he's a bum. It's possible that he's not too. My stance is wait and see. For his sake, I hope he ends up with another team. Then everyone can shift over to Okoye the baby bum. Being a first round DT on this team is going to be a bad position until either 1 we draft one who is dominant or 2 they system allows for them to make plays that give fans a sense of accomplishment other than taking up space.

Well that's something we agree on, because I hope he ends up with another team too........just don't know how many of them see him as a starter or woud even be willing to pick him up.

As far as Amobi goes, while he did have a down year last season (and he had a injury too BTW) at the age of 20, I saw more flashes of great play than I've EVER seen out of TJ, so I still hold out hope for Amobi.......especially if we can find someone to stick next to him who can eat up blockers.

I disagree with that part. I think being a 1st round DT pick for us would be fine if we hadn't reached on the two we have drafted. I'm a big Okoye fan. He has a lot more upside than TJ. TJ was another one of Casserly's "I'm smarter than everyone else" picks. If we start pressuring the QB w/ TJ in the lineup, I bet the criticism quiets down a whole lot.

For the record I am not dogging Okoye at all. I'm very aware of his injury last year. I was suggesting that if and when TJ is gone it's possoble that Amobi could take his place as the Texans fan favorite 1st round dog in the doghouse. Should Okoye not perform up to his first five games of his rookie season it's conceivable that he will begin to be viewed as a disappointment as well. I believe he has potential. I think injuries are often overlooked. I was making that point directly about TJ. I think it is often overlooked in reference to fans opinion of Ryans' performance as well.

I think so too. Success is a magic antidote.

Yes, I know how bad the surgery and recovery is, two of my closest friends have had the surgery performed.

I'm not into conspiracies, but TJ sure has an interesting track record of "things that come up" right before TC every year.

As a Texans player, I hope he's as healthy as possible and has a great year - I'm not holding my breath though.

I'll keep saying this but, I don't think we NEED a big cheese burger eating DT on the line. If Okam steps and becomes that guy awesome. What made Amobi such an interesting prospect in the first place wasn't necessarily his strength at the point of attack if was his speed at which he got to the QB.

It just seems brain dead but Richard Smith kept putting guys who had the speed to get to the Qb and break up plays using quickness off the line, instead he was instructing them to be stand up DTs. I hope Frank knows his players strengths miles better then Richard, if not, we're in for along long season on defense.

First off i am not knockin TJ because hes not playing at the level of pat williams, or albert haynesworth.....not my issue

I just hate the guys work ethic......he could just be a depth guy for all I care...I just would absolutely love to one time just see this guy take a offseason program serious and come into camp lean and mean, ready to knock some heads around like the rest of our team seem to be doing.....man that would give me goosebumps......but this guy just doesnt seem to get that.

why do we never hear the feel good story about TJ like u get with other guys wanting to go to the next level????....no coach praise nothin....ever

Its not just TJ.......Jacoby jones is right behind him as in unrealized potential and not takin your craft seriously........until recently kubes doghouse was always full with these 2 guys

they both have absolutely to much talent to not be something special on this team.....all they are missing is the hunger and hard work part

well hopefully Jacoby has turned the corner or he will soon be out of work as well as TJ......you can only get so many chances....this is TJ's 5th season so at some point you have peaked and you are what you are.....is that TJ's case??????....remains to be seen, but it dont look good, thats for sure

I'm w/ Vinny, Deljuan kicked butt last year.

Disaacks,

The "sports hernia" was not really recognized until until 1980. It it not a true hernia with a classic defect (hole). It is an abdominal muscle plus or minus adductor tendon weakness. There are no bumps or bulges. It is many times a diagnosis of exclusion. However, most sports medicine physicians keep a high level of suspicion when, the classic symptoms are not accompanied by classic physical findings.

Only an EXTREMELY MOTIVATED ATHLETE will be "road worthy" by 6 weeks.......not a label that I would assign TJ. TJ has always had problems with keeping his weight down. If by 6 weeks we see a player that has hovered around his usual weight, his rehab effort could be determined to be significant. If he returns at that time, after being unable or unwilling to incorporate rigorous aerobic and weight training, he will be most likely be mistaken for a gigantic beach ball accidentally let loose on the football field.

Good post. Good points all around. It's one of my favorite things about this team. So many hard working ethical guys. You know, on NFLN the "round table" was discussing Vince Young and what to do with him or what's wrong with him etc. And I think it was Sanders who said something like "There are three types of players in the leauge. One contract guys, Two contract guys and Three contract guys."

Maybe TJ is a 1 contract guy. Maybe he's struggled with chronic injuries and once healthy could be a 2 contract guy.... but maybe he's just a 1'er.
