Going into his third season, Jacoby absolutely has to have a strong camp and pre-season to hang on to his job at the bottom of the wide receiver depth chart. Jacoby is at once incredibly exciting and infuriating. I think I can speak for pretty much every Texan fan when I say that a Jacoby Jones punt return is about the most terrifying thing a Texans fan has experienced since the last time David Carr looked off the first receiver.

I think coming into the league he was a high risk , high reward type of player who teased the hell out of us his first preseason . Sometimes the worst thing that can happen to a young player is early success . After that they think it comes easy and spend more time with their celebrity thing than their football thing .

What's this lookoff thing you speak of ?
 
For some reason I am a sucker for long shots. I am going out on a limb here and say that he will finally mature and take his career seriously. He might not jump too high in the WR depth chart but I think his punt returns will become more consistent. :texflag:
 
Jacoby will do fine. I predict he will have his finest season as a pro and perhaps make the Pro Bowl as a return specialist. I just look at what he's been doing and what others have been saying about him lately. He went back to school and finished off his degree. Kubes has had nothing but glowing comments recently about the guy. I expect big things from Jacoby this season.

It's been a rather quiet off-season far as hearing anything from Jacoby other then I hear he's felt like he's matured. I hope going back to school and finishing off his degree gave him some perspective, and renewed his commitment to the game.

I hope the rest of the summer has been spent with a jug machine and/or a QB throwing routes for him. He's going to need it to stick to the WR corps this year. I'm expecting a solid year from the other Andre on the team and whether I agree or not they opted to match David Anderson's offer sheet and pay raise. Which says a lot about the team's commitment to him and guys who are willing to put in the work needed to make the team. The fact that he's less physically gifted and doesn't play ST should make it clear to JJ that his roster spot is in serious jeopardy.

I want him to stick because it'd justify the 3rd we spent on him and beinga late bloomer myself I can't help but cheer for others.

Speaking of third round picks, I can't say enough how glad I am Kubiak and Smith didn't go for their annual early small school third round pick and instead opted for a senior from the SEC. I'm also hoping to see something from Molden this year.
 
He either becomes a guy who can contribute in the passing offense or he stays a niche player who eventually becomes a journeyman return guy around the league.
 
This could go either way. JJ could be a tremendous player or a tremendous failure this season. As of now nothing indicates which.

I'll second this notion. Aside of athleticism and his ability with the ball in his hands I haven't seen much to make me think he can be a solid pro receiver. That goes for hands, consistency, route running, etc. I'll be pleasantly surprised if he reforms and sticks.

Yeah, I stand by my statement that I've said for at least a year now that he's just a Jerome Mathis 2.0. He's got great big play potential as a KR/PR, but he isn't one of those guys that constantly gets you to the 50 or around it on returns and great field position like a guy like Josh Cribbs does for the Browns. He's more of a guy that takes it all the way, or doesn't go that far. He looks for the BIG play to much rather than to get the good field position at times. As far as being a WR, he's never going to be a productive WR in the NFL in my opinion. He's not even as good as Devin Hester.

He's a very impressive prospect! The problem is that he just hasn't been a good pro. If he doesn't appear dramatically more sure-handed returning punts this season, my cardiologist may have some words for him that aren't too kind!

I don't think he will play for the Texans after this year. I just re-watched the bears game. Unless he's had a brain transplant in the offseason, his potential will carry him one more season on an offense that is set at his position so depth is much less of a concern. I think the Texans will give him every possible chance to succeed. I think he's lucky to play the WR position on this team. I think the 4 guys ahead of him make it safe to keep him as an "extra" WR.

I don't understand how going back to get his degree is indicative that he will all of a sudden turn it around on the football field.

That degree won't make him suddenly stop seeking attention off the field. It won't make his hands any bigger. It won't make his route running any better.

That's the kind of offseason fluff I don't buy into. He may turn it around (I don't think he will, but he could,) but if he does, it won't be because he went back to school during the offseason.

I think him going back to school, means he probally realizes he won't be on the football much longer. He figures he might need that degree pretty soon, to get a real job.

You make some good points. However, it does show that he is making some forward-looking decisions that aren't about instant gratification. Those kinds of decisions are signs of maturity. Certainly, the fact that he is finishing his degree doesn't mean he will stop muffing punts or driving while intoxicated. I do think, however, the odds are better than if he wasn't finishing his degree and instead had been caught driving under the influence again.
 
I just don't think he has what it takes mentally. By that, I mean he doesn't have that all-consuming desire to do whatever it takes to get better, like you see in AJ or Mario, for instance. He's a physical talent, but he just wants to coast. Maybe he's showing signs of maturity now, but I don't think he has the slightest clue how to start carrying himself that way. It's either bred in or it isn't, IMO. He doesn't have it.

That is why i light my offically liscenced Jacoby Jones candles and make the official Jacoby Jones hand signal (sign of the cross) and pray to whoever is listening "Please dont let him fumble please dont let him fumble."

Personally I think the Texans should cart his mom from endzone to endzone. (I think its the only time he runs in a straight line.)
 
Hmmm, I doubt it. I think this will be his last season if he even makes the cut. I see him out in the streets and .....shm. Not a good look for someone who is not a starter...

This is what I'm thinking as well. I want to see JJ do well, but he has to work harder. We'll soon see how much he's matured this offseason.
 
Mama sees to have some influence. Hopefully, she has communicated he needs to step up. She may not get tickets anymore.

you're talking about 2 of the best players in the NFL though. very few compare to their work ethic. at best, he can be a solid contibutor.
