Ferguson mentions 3-4 possibility

In an interview on Ht.com Nick Ferguson's talking about changes that Bush will implement. There's no transcript so I'm doing my best to paraphrase the key quote:

"there were alot of things that Ray Rhodes and Frank wanted to do but when you're not the head guy it's difficult to do that.
He goes on to talk about bringing in Smith and how that presents challenges with rolling protection to Mario. Oddly I thought, he goes on to say that some people think Cushing is a bad pick the way they did with Mario. I haven't heard anyone speak that negatively about selecting Cushing. So that was strange to me. Later, and this is the part that caught my attention, he says
"... With the personnel we have now, we can run so many things with our defense. We can go from a 3-4 to a 4-3 if that's what the coaches want to do. We didn't have that versatility last year."
Now, he may just be saying in theory it would be possible with the players we have now. But he has been there through all the OTA's. It's more than likely that if any hybrid schemes have been implemented that he would be aware of them and possibly speaking in reference to them. Hyper-sensitive analysis of a single sentence I know but hey, it's still the off season.

well, we know the 3-4 gives Manning fits... so anything we can do to scramble his brain and make us less "vanilla" is fine with me.

I seem to recall an interview with another player mentioning the 3-4 in the same general sort of way. I'm wanting to say it was Winston, but I could be wrong on that.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if we did given that we now have the personnel to do it and a D-Coordinator with experience in a hybrid system.

You betcha!
Like Nero said, I think he's just referring to the occasional hybrid system. That's what Bush was a part of in Arizona... and hey - from the end of the draft until training camp starts is HIGH TIME for hyper-sensitive analysis of a single sentence. It's all we've got! :D

I noticed that in your "like me" comment on your blog! I was thinking, hey I just wrote the same thing last night at 4 in the morning after re-watching the packer and tacks games! I need help. :l

LOL - man, there wasn't enough room on my DVR to keep both of those games... but in the three weeks after the Packers game, I probably watched the fourth quarter 30 times.

I still have the Titans/Texans game, though. I've pretty much got the entire second half memorized. I can't get enough of watching AJ torch that overrated midget Cortland Burnedagain over and over.

IMO he was talking 3-4 in theory. Not that it is being planned.

If the week the team is playing Peyton, they decide to install a few packages that feature the 3-4 then we can. We have the guys to do it for a few plays to add confusion to the offensive team.

I'm hoping it's theory at this point. I'd much rather get experience at running...I don't know an effective 4-3 defense before trying to add 3-4 looks.

If Okam shows up at TC then we have the line personnell to run LOOKS, we definitely have the LBers finally.

Besides what some people are missing is when RS had Weaver opposite of Mario we might've well running a 3-3.

I can see some down and distance packages where you simply flip Cushing to the edge - standing up like a 3-4 rush end, taking out one of the tackles and putting in say Diles inside with DeMeco and having the line play some two gap responsibilities in certain down and distance situations. Cush is big enough to take on tackles and shed them and we have some lb's that have enough speed to cover in space. In theory, this defense has some potential to give a ton of looks and have opposing offenses have to prepare for much more than a few simple fronts every week.

Can someone clarify this? Did Ferguson actually say Cushing was a bad pick, or is he saying that the pick received criticism like Mario and in that same vein he'll prove naysayers wrong too?

Not exactly. The way I read it to be was to mean that some people didn't think the Texans drafted for the right position at #15. Nothing against Cushing. I think most people have been pleased with Cushing but still are looking for defensive back help or a complimentary RB.

Personally, I think Cushing is going to be a terror out there. I'm excited.

For the fun of it, how would our 3-4 defense look?

OLB Cushing
DE Mario
NT Antonio Smith
DE Okoye
OLB Adibi/Barwin

This would be more of a 3rd down look, I assume thats when we'd go to the 3-4 look.

I suspected this was the implication. Thanks.

It would probably be similar to what Vinny suggested, I'd imagine.

Probably keep Mario and Smith on the ends, put DelJuan in the middle, and add Diles as the second MLB.

I'd rather do 1 thing well than several things average. See Gibbs' philosphy with coaching the run game. Vince Lombardi subscribed to this as well.
