Steve McNair HOF?

infantrycak

Hall of Fame
Jamison Hensley of the Baltimore Sun polled 24 of the 44 Hall of Fame voters regarding the question of whether quarterback Steve McNair's career merits a bronze bust in Canton.

Of the 24, 17 said no.

I'm kind of with the first commenter after the article, just don't picture McNair when I think HOF QB although I disagree it would cheapen the HOF for him to get in. I think Florio overstates the importance of the rushing yards which McNair mainly gained early on when he wasn't as good a QB. His death should not affect whether he gets in but very well may.

Agreed on all of your points. I consider Steve one of the toughest QB's to play the game, but that coupled with his successes on the field, don't add up to him being a HOFer. If there was a hall for runner-ups, he would be in there.

If they let Michael Irvin in the HOF, then "off field conduct" doesn't matter.

No. The best comparison I heard the other day was Kenny Stabler. He isn't in and could run and he actually has one ring and an AP Player of the Year for 1974. Not only that but the guy was monumental in big games during his time period. I don't want to be cruel but I agree with the cheapening. Not because McNair wasn't a fine QB, tough as nails, etc. But because the Football HOF puts in a minimum amount of guys EVERY year, unlike baseball. You think HOF you think of the all time greats. I just don't think that when I see McNair.

If he had gotten that 1 extra yard in the super bowl against the rams, it would be much easier to consider him. Without the ring, i don't think he gets in.

I don't think he needs a ring to get in but I don't consider him a HOF player. I consider Ken Stabler a HOF player and I donno how you can put in McNair and not Ken Stabler. I also think that Ken Anderson is a far better QB than McNair was (I'm a pretty big McNair fan too). I've seen both Ken Anderson play live as well as Steve McNair and if McNair goes in, then Anderson and Stabler should both go in with him....but that ain't gonna happen. Nothing against Air McNair since he was a hell of a QB...but not a HOF'er to me.

Who says Stabler will not eventually get in?

I think McNair is a strong candidate for the HOF, not so much for his stats, but for the way he competed on the field.

I don't think the lack of a Super Bowl ring should factor into the decision. Although I am delighted he never won a ring with that pos organization.

They let Warren Moon in! No need to elaborate!:stirpot:

Funny, but what you say is true. McNair has broken some of his records (emotions aside). If you remember, Moon had some awesome numbers that I never thought would be broken.

Another thing that people don't bring up and I'm kind of glad because it doesn't matter what race a QB is but Steve Mcnair was the 2nd black QB to play in the Super Bowl. How many years went by between Doug Williams and Steve Mcnair? When Mcnair went in, Mcnabb followed quickly. Now, any doubt that was still left after Williams was eliminated when Mcnair played in the Super Bowl.

On a side note, there were some times when I would see Mcnair going off and think to myself : Houston would've loved this guy.

nope..not close actually imo & warren moon was a beast in the canadian league. If u combine his stats from there with his stats in the NFL he'd arguably be the greatest Qb ever

If he had gotten that 1 extra yard in the super bowl against the rams, it would be much easier to consider him. Without the ring, i don't think he gets in.

People seem to forget that the 1 extra yard would have only tied the game, that is if the extra point was good. It wasn't like the Titans were 1 yard short of victory. They were one yard short and an OT win short of victory.

I'm on the fence....only three QBs have over 30,000 passing yards + 3,500 running yards...regardless of when/where he got them, it's still impressive.

But, since Terrell Davis is not being considered in spite of his accomplisments, I can't put McNair in there, either.

McNair may eventually get in the HOF, but it will probably be when we are all really old men, and when we see it we will reminisce while our kids ask us about him.

That's how I see it if he ever gets into the HOF.

Very true. Lots of QB's lost a Super Bowl. Chris Chandler lost a Super Bowl.

McNair: 13 years in the league, threw for 31,304 yards, 174 TD's and 119 picks. 3 Pro Bowls and one shared MVP.

Chandler: 17 years, threw for 28,484 yards, 170 TD's and 94 picks. 2 Pro Bowls.

Chandler comes up almost right behind him there. If you let McNair in with his numbers how many other QB's with very close* numbers begin to look like they have a case? I don't have anything at all against Steve McNair (other than some pent up resentment over his beating the snot out of us for most of our existence) but I do subscribe to the theory that his election to the HOF could "cheapen" the honor because while the fact that he sported enormous heart is a HOF type quality the rest of the factors that I think matter are not quite there.

I don't say a word if they vote him in though. I just put a little asterisk next to his name in my mind and go on about my business. The thing is that IF he hadn't been killed would he be getting the same consideration? I think he'd be a very Terrell Davis type of choice with lots of debate (different points of debate but the same split opinions) and would fall short. I think he falls short.

*kind of close... people making a case will spin them the way they want

I think he's as certain to get his number retired and be the next member of the Titans "Ring of Honor" thingy as anyone possibly could be and that's fitting. His playing career in Nashville merits this. I just don't think he's a HOF QB.

Finally they'll be voting a Titan in for a change so that's nice.

Nope

When people talk about him they will talk about his toughness and leadership but at the end of the conversation they will say if you cheat on your spouse you could end up like Steve McNair.

I don't think he makes it to the HOF.

Retired number? Probably a long, long time...but it will happen.

He was put into the Titans ring of honor at the MNF Colts game.

Well that makes perfect sense. I didn't know that because I don't pay a lot of attention to that kind of thing unless the Titans are inducting an Oiler into their little circle. As I said he absolutely belongs there.

NFL HOF though? Not as clear cut.

Generally speaking, the path to the HoF is either rings or stats (or both, obviously). It's hard to lack both and get in.

Agree on Stabler and Ken Anderson (in that order) before McNair. Anderson might be the best QB no one talks about.

George and Wychek were also put in the ring on the same night. Childress and I were at the game and he got some great pictures.

His number gets retired this season, wouldn't you think?

I certainly hope so. He led us to a Super Bowl and several playoff appearances and also co-MVPed one season. The only QB worth mentioning in the Tennessee Titans history.

On the HOF thing I don't think he gets in or if he does it is long from when his eligibility starts because of a soft pool of players to choose from. I thought he might have been able to if he could have recovered and played well on the Ravens. Maybe pad his numbers? But he never recovered from the cracked sternum.

True, true. I like what was said on ESPN the other day in that his numbers were [granted] a little down, but that happens when you play the game like Steve did, balls out. I tend to agree with that notion.

Again, HOF, I agree not, but his place strictly speaking as an NFL QB is secure, IMO.

So the Titans RoH is not the same as retired numbers? Interesting. For whatever reason, I assumed it was the same thing.

His memorial is getting a huge turnout in Nashville, judging from news reports.

My best memory was when he was first drafted, and he sat on the bench for a long time. I kept wishing each game would be the game that he started.

I was in that in-between mode as an Oilers fan: I knew they were leaving, but I couldn't let it go yet. So I watched them in their last year in Houston. The only good that I could muster out of the deal was that here was this QB who was being patiently groomed...and I wanted to be there when he got into the game and started leading them.

Obviously, the Music City Miracle was at a point in time when I was done with them, but then the miracle happened--against BUFFALO!--and for a brief moment, I was a Titans fan (revenge of the Oilers, I suppose).

I didn't want them to win the Super Bowl, due to my dislike for Bud. So the "one-yard short" situation was intense for me. Bud was soooo close, but no cigar. I felt bad for the players, but not bad enough to override my pleasure at seeing Bud fail to get a SB title. Payback had been rendered, IMO, or at least from this fan's point of view.

I'm not sure it could be. It would make sense. Even if it were still available I don't see anyone taking #9 any time soon.

According to CBS Sports, they are not retired at this point.

34 Earl Campbell
43 Jim Norton
63 Mike Munchak
65 Elvin Beathea

I could see it happening, though, especially if fans in Nashville really clamor for it. They will probably wait a couple of years, IMO, for all the dust to settle from his death.

I'm glad he got to attend the induction into the RoH. At least his football career got the recognition from fans on a national stage. He deserved that respect for what he put into the game and what he achieved.

RIP Steve McNair

Odd that link does not show the Titans winning the division last season but says we had the best record in the NFL. That must have been tough

yeah, that's pretty weak. You should write them. Probably just human error/oversight.

According to Paul Kuharsy, these 9 are in the Ring of Honor:

Elvin Bethea
George Blanda
Earl Campbell - who could care less
Mike Holovak
Ken Houston
Mike Munchak
Jim Norton
Warren Moon
Bruce Matthews

According to Wiki (I know, it's Wiki but....) these are the retired numbers

1 Warren Moon
34 Earl Campbell
43 Jim Norton
63 Mike Munchak
65 Elvin Bethea
74 Bruce Matthews

Do you ever not act like a chimp .... errr I mean chump? I guess they both work.

I don't think he would have been a HOF'er even if they had won the SB.

This would mean Brad Johnson is a lock for the HOF, and Trent Dilfer as well.

McNair was better than those two guys, but not by such a huge margin that he's an HOF candidate. Winning a single SB isn't the key here. It might have made some noise for his cause, but the weight of his career isn't going to prove that he was HOF material.

Throw in the way he died, and the events that led to it...and I just think there's a steep hill to climb for McNair to be enshrined into the HOF.

Not trying to flame you. Nor start a war of words. I just don't think he's HOF material. I'm thinking Eddie George might even be a tough sell to the HOF.

I don't think a Super Bowl ring would get McNair over the hump. There are a lot of QBs with a ring that will never sniff the HoF.

WTF????? Every single football expert is saying that about McNair..

Relax....I know your sensitve about your stolen QB (on your stolen team) ..who began his pro career 15 minutes away from my house here in San Antonio (where there is Oil) but calm down I liked McNair when he played for my Oilers...

I wasnt being a chump or even insulting..stating fact. Even thoughI do take a lot of satisfaction in the Titans falling a yard short....Bud moved 1500 miles but all he needed was one yard ( I guess u-haul was too expensive to get him to the promised land)

Simply put McNair was good but not great...I guess if they open a really good hall he would be there, or If they based his career on just the games against the Texans maybe the answer to the op would change.

That's more or less where I'm at on it. He's right there in that range where the case is going to be made but I think it always falls a little short.

With his numbers if they'd won that Super Bowl and maybe gone to another one sometime during that period then he probably makes it in a few years down the road. A ring and another appearance probably push him over the top or maybe another couple of Pro Bowls. As it is though he'll always be close but no cigar.

I'm not arguing that at all. I even said I thought he would not go in a previous post but there is still no need to refer to the loss in the SB as a "one yard short" event.

Eddie George: " ... I had to chuckle; he is already in the HOF. He's already there"

I think a Super Bowl would have put him on the cusp. Wouldn't be a first ballot guy but, along the lines BA mentioned earlier, he would have made it down the road in a weak year. I was rooting for him his first year in Baltimore for that reason. IMO, there's a lot more than stats and Super Bowls that made McNair the QB he will be remembered as. He helped break down barriers, as mentioned a lot by analysts and players recently, for the black quarterback. Couple that with a ring and I think he's right there. As it stands though, I don't see much of a chance.

As for retired jerseys, Eddie and McNair's have been kind of left alone up to this point and will probably both be retired soon. Whycheck's was the same until Jared Cook asked Frank's permission and was "allowed" to take 89. I didn't know Bruce Matthew's was officially retired.

Well, you don't see it that way because Bud hasn't left you with blue balls. Yet.

Trust me, it'll happen. 5 years from now, or 10 years from now, or whenever. He'll pull some ignorant stunt, and take the team to a city that will give him MORE. Some city will be wining and dining him, and lure him to their city with a Jerry Jones'ish football stadium equipped with scalp massage machines in every luxury box.

He had lots of awesome memories with that Houston franchise. Bum Phillips and all those Steelers rivalries. Earl Campbell. The Run-N-Shoot era. And that's just a short list. And he still left for Tennessee? Because the city of Houston wouldn't pay his ransom?

That's why "one yard short" holds significance for us: It's like turning down one girl to go the prom with, because you're waiting on a hotter girl to say "yes," but you get stiffed and don't have a date to the prom. Oops!

You need to face the fact that you're not ever going to get past this little deal with us on the issue of your team. It's chiseled in stone, homie.

No GP, he won't. They lucked out and got "old Bud" who has settled down considerably from the guy we knew. Maybe it was the trip to the Super Bowl (even though they didn't win) or maybe it's just his age but Bud is pretty patient these days and from what I can see his trips into the "WTF? Zone" are fewer and further between. Taking his advanced years into account he'll probably die long before he has the chance or the inclination to pull a fast one on Nashville.

I congratulate the city of Nashville on their impeccable timing. They sniped that team at the perfect moment. Well done. What else can I say but...

I am quite confident that Bud is content and plan to spend the rest of his life enjoying where he is. After the move to Nashville, I doubt if he would be shopping a new location if he were 50, and certainly don't see that as a consideration at 86.

Missed Arrow...GP is right on the game is funny to us and that is how we see it...What would you have us call it then.... "Missed it by..that much" or the "Close only counts in horseshoes and handgrenades".

I just find the end reult of the game ironic. A team that was built in Houston moved to 1500 miles to Tennesee could not get that one last yard that has eluded its owner. The Bud jinx lives on.

Which pisses me off even more. He lives in Houston.

Speaking of the HOF here is the 2009 Class:

http://www.profootballhof.com/enshrinement/class_of_2009.aspx

Randall McDaniel
Bruce Smith
"The Bullet" Bob Hayes
Derrick Thomas(RIP)
Ralph Wilson Jr.
Rod Woodson

Back to McNair's HOF chances. He has similar stats to several HOfers right now ( a few better like Terry Bradshaw Joe Namath). Ring is what's going to hold him back. It'd be different if he had reached 40,000 yards and eclipsed the 200 TD passing mark. I think just like the SB it's going to come up just that short. If he gets in then we have to consider the candidacy of Boomer Esiason or Phil Simms. The HOF should be hard to get into. Sorry Steve.
