A few cuts: Brink, Coley, Dedrick

According to Texans Twitter the Texans have released Alex Brink (QB), Kevis Coley (LB) and Doug Dedrick (T)

Guess they like what they see from Grossman so far...

Damn, I kind of liked what I saw from Coley last preseason. The LBing Corps is too deep this year, so I understand the cut. Good luck to the guy.

So the QBs are pretty much set.

Please, please, please stay on the field, Matt Schaub.

Third time is a charm right?

We won't know until preseason just how Danny Boy and Sexy Rexy are in a Texans uni, but I think they are just as capable as Sage with the weapons we have. Unless of course injuries plague our O Line and/or our RBs.

Boley was an interesting prospect but the LBs are too good of a group for him to make an impact. A 7th rd QB is the epitome of a "project." Until he got cut I havent heard much about Dedrick.

By them cutting Brink I think it means they will carry 3 QB's. I can't imagine carrying 2 and none on the PS. Way too risky IMO.

As for Coley, I'm sorry to see him go because I thought he could be developed into a good LBer, and I thought he had another year of PS eligibility.

I hope cutting Brink means we are likely to carry 3 QBs going into the season. Much as i like OD I don't like him as our 3rd emergency QB, more like oh crap QB. Grossman doesn't need to overtly impress jsut prove that he's got a cooler head then Gray like last year and is willing to take the third string spot.

I'm glad Kubiak went ahead and cut Coley early. Maybe he'll have a chance to catch on elsewhere. Just we are that deep now at LB....man that is so good to say.

Hadn't heard much about Dedrick.

I forget how stuff works... I thought you had to pretty much cut someone before you could put them on your PS? Or was that putting them through waivers?

There might be a lesson there, for people willing to look.

You mean something along the lines of the houstontexans.com interview of Kubiak when he said "Lundy has that look in his eye...the sort of look you see in a superstar...I think he's going to be playing for a long, long time..."

LOL. I will never forget that. Seared into my memory.

Kubes talking players up is part of coaching. If a guy is busting his ass, you don't talk bad about him, but maybe it's not enough to cut it. Kubes talks bad, meaning anything other than good, when he thinks a player needs a little kick in the ass. I think he's pretty straight forward, but you can't say, "John, I think this guy will end up being cut to be honest, but I thank him for his effort."

Damn, I liked Alex Brink, whatever happend to Kubes speaking so highly of him? :mcnugget:

Other than liking him on a personal level, what was there to like on the field? He was completely abysmal during the 2 preseason games he actually saw the field. He's never really stood out at open practices either.

Eh, maybe it's because he was a 7th rounder and an underdog?

Kubiak will speak highly of darn near everyone.....to the media.

The lesson I was speaking more about was that the simple act donning of a Texans practice uniform does not make a player a diamond in the rough with a bright NFL future who could only be ferreted out by Smithiak.

maybe Kubiak & Smith have figured they're onto something by picking up former NFL starting QB's off the scrap heap, coaching them up, then waiting for someone desperate enough to come along & offer a draft pick?

winner of training camp battle gets back-up role, loser somewhere to a team unable to fill QB need, then Brink could wind up back on PS as insurance :)

Rep your way.

A coach HAS to say all the right things. He can't be honest all the time, especially with players currently on the roster.

Coach might send little subtle signals to the guy who's always in the hot tub nursing an injury, missing assignments, not hustling, bad attitude, etc. but overall he can't say "I think Brink sucks, but we're going to see if he can turn it around. But he'll probably end up on the practice squad, then get cut and end up coaching high school football as an assistant in a few years. Next question."

If your worst draft pick ever is a seventh round choice . . . wouldn't that be a positive thing?

Our best QB so far is a guy we had to draft two times in the 2nd round...and he wasn't even in the draft those two years.

Our drafting of late-round QBs has only worked out one time: Drew Henson, and that's only because we suckered the Cowboys into giving us a better draft pick than what we spent on Drew.

If Smithiak HAD to take a QB in the early rounds, I can't say that I'd feel safe about that pick. This HC and GM haven't shown that they can draft a QB. They went the easy route and obtained a guy who was already in the league.

Then again, maybe that's the most prudent way to go about it.

"According to a friend of mine inside the organization Alex Bink will be cut."

My quote in the "Texans sign Rex Grossman" right after the Texans signed Rex Grossman. Alex Brink didn't have an NFL arm and Kubes and Rick Smith were trying to find a diamond in the rough.

I expect more cuts to come before camp begins. That is, as long as our rookie draft picks are signed. I think we still presently have like 83-84 players listed on the roster.

Is that all?
It sure seems like we have many more than 84!

Of course it is. But these quotes are then used as proof that a fan's personal favorite, never been heard of before player is on the brink of NFL greatness.

We're talking 'bout preseason here...

What are we talking 'bout...?

Preseason man Preseason...

We talkin 'bout preseason....

He didn't make the team last year either. Depth isn't the obstacle for him, it's talent.
