Bennet Becomes Leader Of Secondary

Rookie cornerback Glover Quin has welcomed the advice coming from Fred Bennett. In practice, Bennett will tell him a technique he should tweak or how a drill should be run. In meetings, Bennett will ask some of the rookies questions, and often praises them when they execute something well on the field.

Now comfortable and more confident in the Texans’ system, Bennett is working to spend some of his time helping those around him, similar to what Dunta Robinson did during Bennett’s first two seasons.

Very cool. I really hope and expect to see a major improvement out of Bennet this season. He looked like the real deal his rookie season but went through the sophomore slump last year. I expect to see him take the next step this year.
 
I seriously think this is Dunta's last season here. We'll franchise him and then he'll move on in FA next year. Houston has good depth at corner now with plenty of talented young prospects.
 
I don't think our secondary is very good yet so the texans definitely need Robinson. I think we all want to see a little less talk and a little more shutting down but his contract bs doesn't mean we don't need him. 10mil for a year pretty well explains necessity
 
I think most of the problems with the secondary last season has to do with the safeties (not to mention Dick Smith's 10 yard cushions)....not really the corners. If Bennett can elevate his play and return more to his rookie form, Dunta won't be missed that much. Plus if our front seven additions allow us to produce more preasure it's going to make the back 4 look that much better.

Dunta didn't really look all that hot either when he came back last season......he's not worth what he's asking for. Atleast not until he can prove he's fully back for a full season.
 
If these guys start playing well I think there is enough talent to move on from Donte. He is already a bug and it might only get worse from here. Why take that chance? Now if he comes back this season and plays at the level he played at pre injury or anywhere close then talk about it. Produce and you shall receive. Close mouth and preform. Show the team why they should consider your terms while being out there with your football team on the football field.

Agreed. As another poster said, I really believe we will see a big difference with our secondary due to the move from the vanilla read and react defense. Also, we should be getting a much better pass rush which will also help our secondary significantly.

Yeah we'll probably give up alot more big plays (but whats the difference in giving up a big play or being slowly bled to death on a 12-13+ play drive?), but we'll also FORCE alot of big game changing plays on defense....and that's something we didn't do last year.

Under Dick Smith this team basically ran a preseason shell defense throughout the entire season.
 
I am ready to see the changes that have been made or are being made this offseason under the new DC. Donte hasn't shown anyone anything yet he was ok when he came back last season but not flashy by any means. He should be with his team right now at OTA's showing all of us why he should get more money.

If Dunta does not sign his franchise offer and the other guys look good in the first couple of preseason games, the Texans might pull back their franchise offer. OOPS! Bye-bye $9.97 million, hello $2 to 3 million.

I attribute much of Bennett's "slump" to the coaching he received under Hoke and the scheme of Richard Smith. The more Bennett was coached by these guys, the worse he became. Bennett has more talent that any CB signed to the roster, and I expect him to be one of the starting CBs on opening day.

Glad to read that. What is it that you see in Bennett that makes you believe he "has more talent than any CB signed to the roster"? Makes me excited to read that, and I definitely agree he is very talented. Just curious what makes you give him such high accolades. :tiphat:

Oh and I definitely agree with you about Hoke and Dick Smith being the problem. Glad they are both gone.

He showed signs in his rookie season. Tough and willing to learn and teaching other guys a thing or two at OTA''s like Donte used to do. A hard hitter. Saying things like try it this way or that way at OTA's and his physical nature on the football field. Bad coaching last season just led to his downfall last season. It was just his second season and he will continue to grow in the league.

Well, I think he has good size. Decent speed. He can turn, run, and find the ball. I think what Bennett has over the rest of the current group is instincts to play the position. There's physical ability in the Texans secondary. Most are lacking the instincts to play the position.

When Bennett was put into the lineup as a rookie, he flourished. It was after another offseason and camp with Bennett and Smith where Bennett's play seemed to become mechanical. I think Bennett stepped up his play over the 2nd half of '08, though. Just around the time when the defense as whole began to improve. Maybe not a such a coincidence.

Bennett went thru a little slump last year but when you get right down to it...he has more physical tools than any DB on the team IMO. I've been right up on him and with those long arms he has I know my man can cover.

Dunta didn't look all that hot? I thought he looked pretty good to say he wasn't at 100%. I'm not turning on Dunta because he is trying to get the deal he wants. Sometimes I really wish they wouldn't even make the players contracts public.
 
Lets say Dunta is back and in good form. If I'm the coaches I'm starting Fred over Reeves just because I think he is a better player and has more talent but, they are paying Reeves more dough so he has to start???

Dunta's play was very erratic when he came back last season.....maybe it was due to rust and the long layoff (which it probably was), but I'd rather just tag him and force him to prove he's all the way back from injury and can play more consistent again before we attempt to lock him up to a expensive long term contract.

The guy needs to stop bitching about making 9 million dollars next year though.....especially in this economic climate.

I understand the Texans position too, but I try not to get into the financial part of it all. I can't blame any player for trying to get what he can and at the same time I can see the teams position.
 
Folks it is DUNTA. C'mon, learn the name of one of the top 10 Texans players.

Can you imagine if you could put Bennett's instincts with Reeves' physical ability? - half the field would be shut down.
 
I still think Donte should prove more before he gets paid what he wants to get paid in these rough times. I say prove on the field and make sure he is worth that nine mill that he wants. Regardless of how you thought he preformed when he came back at the end of last season there was still weren't enough games left to show that he is worth nine mill IMO. Show it this season.

If Mark Parsons can do in the NFL what he did in college we will have our shutdown corner and Dunta becomes expendable. We finally are getting some good athletes at the CB position. It is going to be a good competition in camp this year. As far as Bennett, I think he has the ability to be our best corner right now. If Reeves would just react on passes and try to find the ball we would be in a good position. He has the speed to run with anyone he just needs to tweak his technique.

He didnt go through a slump he just wasnt played. Smith played Faggins at the start of the year and once big play was benched for Bennett our secondary play improved.

Wow! I should be watching more Ohio University football. So should the NFL, as Parsons went undrafted and was scrounging for a training camp roster spot.

Seriously, has anyone actually seen Mark Parsons play a game of football? Other than some youtube highlights? He's being talked up like the 2nd coming of Deion Sanders in a couple of threads. I'm just asking if this Parsons love is some weird internet hype (ala Boomer Grigsby) or if it is based on some first-hand knowledge?

Actually, I thought it was his poor play in the preseason and the first 3 games that got him benched in the first place. My memory is a bit hazy but according to NFL.com, he started the first 3 games of the season, got benched, and then started games weeks 9-11. He then got benched for Dunta.

Believe me, I am not saying I don't think Bennett is a good player. Quite the contrary actually. He just didn't look that great last year. I really think, or really hope, that he plays like he did his rookie season when he had 14 pass deflections and 3 INTs.

So yes, I would consider last year a slump.
 
Hold'em has better physical gifts than Bennett, but they're both good athletes.

I'd like to see those two develop into our starters. Two guys who were looked at as potential safety prospects would make teams think twice about running outside, and their size/strength combination would allow us to play more press coverage on 3rd and short.

I don't think anybody is mad at Dunta for trying to get it. I think people are mad because he's whining about what he is getting which is one hell of a shot to reprove himself. In no way is what he got a slap in the face, which is what he is treating it as. He's claiming top 5 and the Texans are giving him a year to back those claims without sinking themselves into contract oblivion like Casserly would have. Dunta was asking for the Superstar Deluxe package and the Texans gave him the Superstar Starter Kit. It comes with overlooking the 2nd half comeback of a HUGE injury that still is in the back of people's minds.

Excellent post and you nailed it. I don't blame Dunta for wanting his money. But I do blame Dunta for whining about it to the media, especially when he is getting paid $10mil for 1 season. I truly believe he is being extremely selfish. He is worried about his health and wants the guarantee which in turn sticks it to the team that is dumb enough to pay him if he does get hurt again and/or isn't the same player he was before the injury. What the Texans are doing is totally fair. Demeco is another story. The Texans better pay that man!

Not with signing of Mark we don't if he isn't in OTA's it probably only going to get worse. Work with what is there allow them time to grow and develope more skills then part ways with Donte. There are other CB's on the roster talented and young who have a whole NFL career ahead of them.

I watched an OU game, when they played OSU. He did not exactly stand out, but he did a good job against their receivers. I dont remember him giving up any big plays, and he looked physical enough. This man-love though is a little ridiculous. I had him as a 6th rounder, so I do think it is a good pickup, but no more than a 4th corner. Maybe.

It happens every year. One rookie or another becomes a board hero who is single handedly going to win 3 games for the team. Half the time they aren't even on the team when the season starts. Of course, I always hope they do become the hero.

Couldn't agree more. I just haven't seen anyone in this secondary really flourish or take off with Hoke or Richard Smith. I'm not solely blaming either but for this but...sometimes where there is smoke there's fire.

Minus Dunta I still think we've got two guys in Reeves and Bennett that are starting caliber guys. There's some interesting talent on the backend of the CBs and looking over the roster as of now not a lot of veteran guys. While it sucks Dunta's contract dispute has him holding out, it's real good that these younger guys are getting valuable reps that can pay off during TC and pre-season when we can get a better idea of what they are capable of.
 
IMO, to truly become a leader you must prove it on the field first. I don't think Fred has proven anything. It's possible poor coaching has handicapped his progress to some extent, but to me, he's still a #3-4 CB until he can prove otherwise.

That said, I think Fred has the prototypical size and speed for the position. I suppose the problem in his game resides between his ears.
