James Casey and Antoine Caldwell both have experience long-snapping so we could save a roster spot there.

I reall ycan't even wrap my head around the final 53 at this point..

Yeah, because it's a crazy exercise at this point. That being said, it does offer a view of where some of the roster battles will be and a look at where we have depth and where we lack it.

For instance:

I'd like to see another DE emerge: possibly McClover, Jamison, or someone we don't have yet.

Clearly, we still have work to do at RB

If we keep 4 TEs, we probably go with 9 OL... that means we need a couple developmental linemen on the PS

I'm still not thrilled with our safety depth, even though I'm excited about Nolan. I'd like to see Harrison get beat out by somebody... but, I don't know who right now.

I wonder if the team is toying with the idea of moving JJ or DA. We could certainly go into games with 4 WRs with the versatility at TE. However, we'd better have some promising WRs on PS if we go into the season that thin at WR.

There will be some difficult cuts at LB. I've got : Coley, CThompson both getting cut and I think they can both play. Particularly, I'm interested in CTHompson, who can also offer some depth at DE. But, he was unimpressive last season and the coaches seem down on him.

I really like the potential at CB. I know there are a lot of question marks but we have a nice mix of really good athletes with a history of making plays. Molden, McCain, and Quin are all really impressive athletes that look like football players.

I hear ya Dale! This past weekend just got my blood burning for MORE! Sometimes I think I am one SICK old lady when all I do when I sit down at my pc is look up football info. You guys have been GREAT providing so many interesting links, and reading up on our new players just makes me itch for the season to start.

I don't get into the detailed chat you guys do about all this stuff, but, I do have my own little "53" roster picked out, just to see how close I can get. Hell, keeps me busy, and it's fun to perdict. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for J. Casey to make the final cut. For some of you who have known me since the get go, know that I'm a TE kind of gal!:) Pair him with OD on the field and I wouldn't sit down if they threatened to throw me in Reliant jail!! Just gonna be fun watching this young man mature as a TEXAN!! JMO!

We'll see if Kubiak and Shanny are creative . What would happen if we spread out the field with Daniels and Slaton in the slots . AJ and Walters on the outside and Casey as the RB . Casey was described as Tim Tebow but a better passer .

I believe I read somewhere that Antoine Caldwell was also a Long Snapper. If this is true, that could easily save a roster spot. I believe Casey was also worked out at LS, but he's never done it before. Still, if he were to add that to his resume, it makes it easier to fit someone else in.

That said, I don't want to force someone into a LS position who's not going to be solid there (Casey would scare me, as would anyone else just learning the position). The reason people devote a roster spot to LS is because it can be catastrophic when those players mess up.

Let's just say they have the opportunity to dream up some wicked "trick" plays with the versatility some of these new guys seem to have. Won't that be fun to watch!:)

I think that Kevis Coley will be Demeco's backup and that Kevin Bentley will be cut. Coley has talent.

I believe I read somewhere that Antoine Caldwell was also a Long Snapper.

To quote my own post (!!), I've been trying to find out any more about this, but haven't. I know I read somewhere that he was "good at long snapping" or something very close, but the only thing I've seen in the profiles is a mention of him being comfortable with the shotgun (a lot different from LS...). So, I'm guessing that wherever I read about LS ability was just a mistake - oh, well.

I think that Kevis Coley will be Demeco's backup and that Kevin Bentley will be cut. Coley has talent.

NO WAY!.. I really like Coley. However, I could argue that Bentley was our best LB last year, only he didn't see the field enough. He also is very productive on Special Teams and can play multiple LB positions. Add to that, Coley has P.S. eligibility. So, only an injury to Bentley would allow that to happen.

I have to do this in segments....
First the O-line; the guys in red won't be here in Sept.

(I'm probably gonna catch it from TTP and Ole Miss :) )

Yeah we still have June 2nd cuts, TC injuries ( hopefully none or aleast not to serious) to get thru. This would probably be a better feel around the end of July.

Hey, what else we gonna do, watch baseball?
meh...

Two key things in all of this....what we don't know.....Is if Coner can stand up. We do know he is a natural athlete. The second is what does the Mushroom king, gibbs the elder, think of Studard and Casey ? We don't know and he ain't talking. Go ask McClain. If Coner can stand up...that makes June expendable.
The other thing about Coner is.....how much do they put on his plate this summer ? We know for a fact he can run an arc....What about TE.....FB.......OLB?

Learning one thing is a lot for a rook..... be interesting to see how much they put n his plate this summer. How much Casey and Coner Barwin can learn this summer will be a direct correlation to how versatile they can be with the roster in September.

What I do know of Tim Jamison....is he is awful slow. This guy is probably PS fodder....see how much he learns....and how much his body grows this summer.

There will be injuries this summer. You can bet on that. I also believe they aren't finished with the RB slot. As the man said....there are many ways to acquire players.

Thats a 51 man roster.

PS: Adrian Foster or Jeremiah Johnson, Alex Brink, Tim Jamison, Brice McCain.

It's hard to believe that the Texans would go into the 2009 season with only two quarterbacks on the 53-man roster. Just as a point of reference, I did some searches for 53-man rosters from last season, and though I only checked about seven teams, I didn't find a single team that didn't carry three QBs on their regular-season roster.

I'll be surprised if Alex Brink isn't on the Texans' final roster this year.

Texans have very rarely carried 3 QB's on the roster and then, only when Schaub was coming back from injury.

EDIT: Under Kubiak.

you guys seem to be forgetting about Darnell Jenkins. the UDFA that was brought up at the end of last year. i think that the coaches have realized that JJ isn't going to be a good WR and if he makes the team he'll be strictly a PR with some kickoff duties. i'd guess that Jenkins comes in and gets the 5th WR position.

I don't understand why theres the perception that Jacoby isn't a good WR.

I think he may se a reduced role or may even be cut, but what is the objection to his game besides the fumbles?

not the greatest route runner really. it's not that he isn't fast enough or that he doesn't have good vision when he gets the ball it's just that he is going to get beat out by more all around players.

True. I'm just surprised that the Texans only take two QBs into the season. That's pretty risky, and very rare among NFL teams. It's not that far fetched to imagine a scenario in which two QBs go down in a game. Who plays quarterback if that happens?

I think it was O.D. that was named the emergency QB.

There are several teams that do it but it is a risk. I think he and Shanahan did the same thing most of their years with the Broncos. They stuff a QB on the practice squad and bring him up if there's an injury until they can find a more experienced backup. Of course, like you point out, that doesn't help much on gameday.

And the past couple of years, OD was the emergency QB.

This isn't going to happen but what I'd do if I were GM. Keep in mind throughout the draft process, I threw out some wild trade ideas... but none of them stuck. So yall don't have to worry.:) *TRADE*-HOU trades WR David Anderson + 2010 late round draft pick to DEN for RB/FB Peyton Hillis. (Denver expressed interest by offering a contract to DA but Texans matched it. I think James Casey can fill DA's role perfectly. DEN drafted a WR out of S. Carolina in the 5th that fits the slot so I doubt this happens).

QB: Matt Schaub, Dan Orlovsky
RB: Steve Slaton, Peyton Hillis, Chris Brown, Jeremiah Johnson
FB/H-Back: Vonta Leach, (Hillis backup FB)
WR: Andre Johnson, Kevin Walter, Andre Davis, Jacoby Jones, Darnell Jenkins

OG: Chester Pitts, Mike Briesel, Caldwell

CB: Dunta Robinson, Jacques Reeves, Fred Bennett, Antwaun Molden, Grover Quin

LS: Clark Harris
K: Kris brown
P: Matt Turk

PS: Arian Foster, Alex Brink, Kevis Coley, Brice McCain, Jason Watkins + some others I'm sure.

*note- Going into the 2010 season, Casey/Caldwell will be our LS saving a roster spot but not in their rookie season. Dunta Robinson will not be back, 2010 1st rd pick goes to starting CB, Brice McCain activated and shares KR duties with Andre Davis. Caldwell will be starting C with Myers being backup C/G.

I would love the trade, but I don't think it happends. If D.A is still on the team, and someone(McCain or Quin) can return punts, don't be shocked if JJ is gone.

LOL. I may be wrong, but I believe this link explains it:

http://www.thecoolclinic.com/

"The Mushroom Society was established several years ago by a group of professional offensive line coaches. The mushroom logo signifies the similarity between the "O-Line" coach and the fungus. Both are kept in the dark and fed garbage yet continue to flourish! C.O.O.L. (Coaches of Offensive Linemen) are proud to be mushrooms."

How many times has that ever happened?

How many times has that ever happened?

It's obviously an extremely rare event, but apparently enough of a concern that the overwhelming majority of teams in the NFL carry three QBs on their roster. It's also relevant because if your starter is injured, all of a sudden you no longer have a back-up QB on your roster, because your back-up becomes the starter, and you've got nothing behind him.

I suppose it's not as big of a deal of you keep a QB on your practice squad, because at least by doing so you have a guy on your team who knows your offense and can be activated.
