"Other ways to acquiring a player besides free agency and the draft". . .Rick Smith

Texans Pride

Veteran
During the press conference, after the draft, when asked about not drafting a running back, Rick Smith stated , "There are other ways to acquiring a player besides free agency and the draft".

Any chance he could be talking about a trade? Also, they mentioned that they took James Casey because he was the highest rated player on their board at the time....Maybe a piece of trait bait?

Thoughts?

Mods, sorry if this isn't in the right spot. . .

I hope not. I am pumped about Casey. He gives us some much needed versatility. He could really end up being the steal of the draft.

Free agency, draft, trades...what else is there? Cloning?

If you clone Mario and AJ, would you have to give the copies the same contracts? Food for thought...

They must have deal with someone for a RB. They must. Speculation has been some of the excess Bronco backs. We shall see.

Sign and trade #23? I dunno. I do think they have something up their sleeves.

Nope. I don't think its trade bait. As I have said in another thread, the Broncos have too many rbs and will cut at least 1 if not two. I think we will sign one or both.

I would have considered waiver wires and UDFA to be free agency so he must be thinking trade..... who do we have to shop though? (that would want #23 huge ego and paycheck)

some around here would hate us talking to Denver, but I think LaMont Jordan would be a great fit here, instead of the crowded backfield in Denver. If Rick has any friends left there, a phone call is appropriate at this time.

Since Al loves speed, speed, & more speed, I say we send JJ to him in exchange for 1 of his 7 RB's. I'll take that bench warmer named Michael Bush, if you don't mind.

off the streets

Iam going to be the texans next RB ......

or maybe they will get a player from the euro/canada leauge

I think travis is trade bait. no one keeps 5 dt's on their roster. Also, either bentley or thompson might be gone also.

I would not be surprised to see Dunta Robinson, David Anderson, Travis Johnson and Owen Daniels being mentioned in trade discussions. David Anderson or Travis Johnson to the Broncos makes the most sense for one of their RBs in my opinion.

Signed 2 UDFA's in Oregon RB Jeremiah Johnson & Tennessee RB Arian Foster.

I saw this in todays Chron with the tag 1000 yard rushers "hampered by injuries."
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/6393184.html

Smith hopes the Texans solved the issue with two undrafted free agents - Oregon’s Jeremiah Johnson (5-9, 209) and Tennessee’s Arian Foster (6-1, 226), both of whom were 1,000-yard rushers hampered by injuries.

Johnson rushed for 1,201 yards and 13 touchdowns last season. Foster ran for 1,193 yards and 12 touchdowns as a junior, but after undergoing knee surgery after the season, he was limited to 570 yards as a senior.

The Texans believe the free-agent backs fit in their one-cut zone system.

Good list there. I'd hate to see us get rid of Daniels or Anderson, I really like both those guys.

But I could potentially see a David Anderson for Peyton Hillis trade. Hate to see him go but we'd get our other RB spot locked down.

Edit: I was thinking we'd be thin at WR without DA and we'd have to bring another WR in. The more I think about it, We'd have AJ, KW, AD and JJ... this could be where James Casey fits in.

Denver will end up jettisoning at least a couple of their RB's. Why trade for one when you can be patient and get one for free? I also like Arian Foster as a guy who could stick.

I don't want to trade any players for Denver RB's. I would rather wait until they cut some.

I'm with ya. No need to trade. They are not going to carry 6 RBs on the roster.

Assuming he becomes a free agent, then we'd have to bid against 30 other teams for him. Other teams offering more money. He'd get snatched up before we could even dial (303).

I'm not sure why you feel that way...

You really think 30 other teams are going to have interest in the RB's they cut? I don't...I doubt it would be more than 7....

I like our chances at getting one of them in free agency...

If we want to get an RB of value in a trade, we will have to give something of value in return.

The rest of the league now knows that the Texans are desperate for a solid running back who is ready to play. Whatever teams the Texans try to negotiate with can be expected to use that knowledge to their advantage.

No, I think 30 other teams would love to get Peyton Hillis. I like our chances of getting one of their backs in free agency too... but not a guy that would make me cross our RB Need off the list. He's the only guy I really want and to get him, we gotta trade for him, imo. I don't think the others that might get cut would offer much more than Chris Brown, Ryan Moats, Arian Foster or Jeremiah Johnson. Bring them in for camp fodder but it would be hard for them to make the active roster.

Sorry, I think your 30 figure is bloated...

Even if we have to compete for him on the open market I think we'd have a very attractive situation that would be pretty tempting to him...

I like our chances.

Yes my 30 team number is exhaggerated. My point is that it becomes risky when they hit the open market. It's the same reason why you trade for a guy that has 1 year left on his contract (see Matt Schaub, Sage Rosenfels, etc etc).

If the Texans covet a player enough to fill this role, it wouldn't surprise me to see a trade one bit. Now maybe they don't like Hillis as much as me which is cool, there's other options. If he's highly coveted by us we should trade for him... but if he's just another option to bring in (while a solid option) then it's best to wait.

I think you're right that we do have an attractive situation. It could be the homerism talking cuz I always think that... but it's obviously we're looking for another RB... preferably big... and he's going to play. He's not just going to sit. There are huge questions marks with the RB's we have and are getting as udfa's.

Not for the kind of jack he's going to want. He still wants to be the starter and that ain't happening here.

Edge is a good one-cut runner, but he is looking exactly like Ahman did a few years ago when we picked him up. Good back, but no thanks.

At this point I'd rather pick up a bunch of undrafted/waive wire guys that we think can fit in our system...

I don't really want to trade or sign any older backs either...Chris Brown seems to have that on lockdown..

Also I would rather hang onto DA than trade him. He is a glue guy on offense and it would be better to pick up a FA RB than to send him packing in a trade.

I agree. A this point I think that Hillis might be able to be had for a 4th or 5th round pick next season which seems like fair value to me if we were to trade. I think Hillis would be worth it. He proved himself last season.

Those are QB's...Quality QB's are rare compared to quality RB's...

It makes sense to trade for a QB that has starting potential because you pretty much know for a fact that he'll have plenty of suitors...Even teams with established QB's would want him as ins...

RBs....not so much...

Valid points and I agree. The QB position holds a premium. A trade for a RB is pretty rare. Although it's not exact, the concept is still the same. Now one good thing, IMO, is that Smith/Kubiak didn't panic over the weekend as far as RB goes. I'd like to know what they really think about the guys we have/got or if they'd even consider a trade. I think for Hillis, I'd offer a Day2 pick or maybe a certain player... but I'm just a fan and not a GM :)

Hillis is the guy I'm banging for because I think he would complete our offense and he'd be the best option of anybody for our team. The guy is 6'2, 250 lbs and runs in the mid 4.5's. He's a smart player that is hard working and has a high motor (think Owen Daniels as a FB/HB). He fits our offense perfectly. He's a BIG back that's doesn't get stopped in the backfield, he will run over LB's and even DT's, he'll gain the extra yards and is great between the tackles and in short yardage situtations. On top of that, he has great hands and is a good receiver out of the backfield. Will catch the short dump offs and will even make the grabs 15 yards downfield like a TE/WR. He's quick and powerful and I think would be a great (the perfect) compliment to Slaton. Was out the last few games because of a pulled hamstring- supposedly 95% now and should be fine to go in minicamp. We already know he's been successful in the NFL and fits our system. I think we'd be set with Slaton and Hillis. Chris Brown, Arian Foster and Jeremiah Johnson all have HUGE question marks around them. Slaton/Hillis combo... we'd be a top 5-10 rushing team easily.

Here's something to think about. I've never been a big guy on trading away draft picks for players. I love the idea of building through the draft. I also think it's very rare to trade for young players that were just drafted in the last few years.

With that said, I'd like to use Hillis as an example. The Broncos have new people in charge and may be getting rid of the previous regime's guys. Heck, they already have! Now, Hillis was drafted in the 7th round last year but completely outplayed his draft position. The guy averaged 5 yards a carry on 68 rushes with 5 TDs. Avg. reception was almost 13yards off 14 catches with 1 TD. Never fumbled the ball. Has proven he can play in the system we run and in the NFL. Is still young- only 23!

I don't know what draft pick it would take to get him... but please remember this is purely hypothetical. Kubiak/Smith wanted Shonn Green/Glen Coffee with our 3rd round pick. Who knows where they had Andre Brown rated. But if you compare Player A (Hillis) to players in the draft and where we would have taken them- 3rd/4th/5th/6th... couldn't you argue that your getting a known quantity that's arguably better for the same price? Only difference is we're giving away a future pick and we don't know who would be on the board at that time. But we'd have a "better" RB that's needed for this year.

Just something to think about.. Thoughts?

I agree totally. Getting a proven commodity is always better. The only problem is that sometimes guys who seem like "proven commodities" in one system just don't produce in other systems. This isn't something we'd have to worry about with Hillis, though.

This is why I think its much better to draft bpa for your system than to reach and draft on need. Draft guys you know you can work with and then sell high if you can
