Tony Gonzalez to the Falcons

Wow!! Give Matt Ryan a weapon like Tony Gonzalez? That's huge, unless KC knows something that the Falcons don't.

I had the Chiefs targeting one of the TE's in the 3rd round.

I wouldn't be surprised to see it happen now.

Well I think Kansas City got the better end of the deal. A 2nd round pick for a 33 year old Tight End that will be on the downside of his career. Seems to me that Kansas City got rid of him at the PERFECT time, and for great value.

It's a great year to draft a replacement. That's for sure.

Yeah, its a pretty good deal. Tony G goes to a contender, the Chiefs get a pretty good pick.

Well, with Crumpler signing with the Titans last year, it surely filled a void of a dominant TE with the Falcons.

I think its a fair trade all the way around. Chiefs can continue to build, and the Falcons will temporarily fill a void a very tough NFC South race.

Love it for The Falcons. Terrific weapon for Matt Ryan to have. ATL should have a pretty solid offense next season.

And thats the division folks..not even close. :user:

I'm wondering if Carolina is ever going to do something about their QB situation. They've got a pretty good team otherwise, certainly good enough to compete in the South IMO.

NM just saw swt's thread. What on earth are they thinking?

Great move by all involved.

KC does the right thing by one of their all time greats letting him go to a contender.

TG gets his wish to play games that matter.

AF get one of the best TE's in the game.

I like it for everyone.

But age is a bad factor here. Let me show you something. Gonzo is coming off of a 96-1058 and 10 td season. And he had 99 recs the year before. Shannon Sharpe had 62-770 and 8 tds when he was 35 years old. He could play another 2-3 years. So the Falcons could still fill this position is down the road. The guy is by no means washed up and Cassell has no security blanket to go with Bowe now. So now coverage goes that ways.

I would be shocked if the Falcons finish with a winning record. That division is topsy turvey. One year you're on top, the next, you're on the bottom.

Guess not.

I agree that Gonzalez is still putting up great numbers, but age is definitely a factor. Do you draft a 2nd rounder only expecting him to play three seasons? I sure hope not...

Plus Kansas City used a 1st round pick on Gonzalez and got 12 seasons of a Hall of Fame Tight End, AND after those 12 seasons STILL got a 2nd round pick in the end for him.

I'm not saying that Atlanta got gypped by any means, I'm just saying that Kansas City got the better end of the deal.

I don't look at it like that. I look at it as to what you are looking to do with the window you have now. No you don't take a second rounder expecting 3 years but you get a Pro Bowler to help the youth and to get you to the next level compared to a rookie that you don't know what you are getting. My point is that KC now doesn't have 90 plus catches to take pressure off Bowe. You won't automatically get that in a second rounder...you don't know what you're getting. I'm not saying KC should never have traded Gonzo...he wanted it..I just think when you compare the teams and the trade Atlanta goes from young playoff team to young playoff team with more weapons. Thety are in a better position than KC for the near future. The guy still produces.

You make a good point. I guess I see the Chiefs more in a rebuilding stage, and they cannot necessarily look into the now, but into maybe 2 or 3 years down the road. They got their quarterback of the future in Cassel, and they've also got the #3 overall pick in which they probably have the best chance of trading down a Top 10 pick IMO. I guess our argument is more of a "we'll just have to wait and see what happens" kind of thing.

I'm with you. Gonzalez to the Atlanta wins for both teams, but right now, with at least 2 years of production of Gonzalez to come, the Falcons win. This is only ever going to help Matt Ryan appreciate having a good receiving tight end, and will make them far better in the long run. As a Texans fan, this is more worrying, as Atlanta have tightened up an already solid offense.

But must be said...if Gonzalez is worth a 2nd, how much is OD worth!!
