Vince Young Plans To Shut Up, Get Paid
Posted by Mike Florio on April 20, 2009, 9:15 a.m.

Titans quarterback Vince Young is supposed to be entering his prime. As the fourth season of his NFL career approaches, the third overall pick in the 2006 draft should be preparing to try to take a talented Titans team to the first NFL title in franchise history.

Instead, he’s scheduled to ride the pine.

Even more troubling than that, in our view, is the fact that he seems to be OK with it.

“I am just going to keep my mouth closed, man,” Young said Sunday night, according to Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean. “All I am doing this year is shutting up, just shutting up and working. I am going to smile and shut up and continue being Vince Young, a happy smiling guy. I am not going to get into the hoopla any more because of the fact I can’t win any more, I see.”

He says he’s not upset with starter Kerry Collins for taking the job that, a year ago, Young held.

“I don’t have nothing against Kerry,” Young said (which of course technically means that Young does have something against Collins). “Kerry is just doing his job and that is the same thing I want to do, take care of my job and wait for my turn when they call me.”

Young doesn’t know when his turn will come.

“I haven’t the slightest idea,” he said. “I am just leaving that to other people and trying to get myself in shape and get myself ready. I do know I am healthy and my body feels great and it’s been a long time since I’ve felt that way.”

In the meantime, he’ll just keep smiling — and getting paid.

“Whatever they want me to do that is what I am going to do,” Young said. “If they want me to sit on the sideline and be there to watch the game then that is OK with me, but at the same time I am getting my checks and I am fine.’’

Those checks will be worth $126,470 each, which constitute 17 installments of a $2.15 million base salary.

But this arrangement can’t go on for much longer. Next year, those checks will grow to more than $440,000 each, as part of a $7.5 million base salary.

In our view, it’s about more than the money. It’s about a burning desire not only to play, but also to excel. In our view, Young seems to have resigned himself to the fact that he’s not going to dominate at the NFL level.

And so he appears content to coast, which at last check wasn’t one of the ingredients for a high-end NFL quarterback.

:mcnugget:

I'm loving Mario more and more every day.

I'm not sure what to take from that. Part of me thinks that people can't read too much into it and that basically he is saying he isn't going to be a team cancer and that he will work hard and not complain. Good idea. But when the money issue was mentioned it made me think that he didn't care because there was a paycheck at the end of the day.

Wow. What a crappy thing to do to VY. He says hes going to shut up and work hard, and Florio spins the entire article to sound like he doesn't deserve his paychecks...

If Vince stays quiet, it will be the smartest thing he's ever said.

I don't know if he can win at this point. He might as well stay quiet (but if you picked a QB at no. 3 you might at least want him to express a desire to start!)

Wow. What a crappy thing to do to VY. He says hes going to shut up and work hard, and Florio spins the entire article to sound like he doesn't deserve his paychecks...

Florio did spin it some. I saw the same blurb on Ben Maller's rumor page over at Fox Sports and it had a little different feel to it. That said, I'd still want my QB to express a desire to start.

Well, the article sounds like VY is maybe maturing and trying to keep his mouth shut and go to work, right up until this quote from him:

“Whatever they want me to do that is what I am going to do,” Young said. “If they want me to sit on the sideline and be there to watch the game then that is OK with me, but at the same time I am getting my checks and I am fine.’’

That's where he lost me. Up until that quote, I was thinking that the author of the article was off base. Then VY opened his mouth and inserted his foot.

See above.

He better be taking some classes on how to invest those big paychecks, because at the rate he's going now, his career as a pro football player seems mighty SHORT! Maybe he's just whining because he's NOT A TEXAN!! 126+,000 bucks a game just to ride the pine!! DAMN!! He might be smarter than we think! j/k! When he's 30 yrs old and still doing NOTHING, he will still be rich!

While waiting in the aisle to be checked out at Kroger I saw a pack of VY sausage that I guess the purchaser decided not to buy. Even his little sausages get no love. (tear rolls down my eye..........with laughter......for those that thought he was the next big thing)

See above.

That quote is exactly why I said I was torn above. Up until that point he was saying the right things.

You are excitable. :)

I don't have a problem with Vince saying he is geting his checks so he is fine.

At the end of the day it is a job.

One other thing I thought about in regards to his "I'm getting my checks" statement.

Him all of a sudden only caring about the money and resigning himself to being a back-up makes no sense at all.

Last year folks thought he was having a mental breakdown because he was struggling on the field and then lost his job as a starter. Now he's gonna pull a 180 and say he's ok with being a back-up and collecting checks? Not jiving...

Sounds to me like people close to him have been telling him not to beat himself up so bad and to not take it so hard.

They probably even reminded him that at the end of the day it' just a game that he gets paid to play.

Sounds to me like VY is rationalizing to keep his sanity.

I would feel bad for him, except for all the **** Mario took over the whole thing. He was killed for a whole year. He was booed at what should have been the best day of his life. I had to see VY yell " This is my house!" in my stadium. Thats what happends when you buy into yourself too much. They slanted the articles against Mario back in the day, so no sympathy from me. :soldier:*Shrug*

Sounds to me like he's doing the best he can in pretty much a no win situation for him. Only way he gets back his starting role is if freaking Kerry Collins gets injured, thats gotta be atough pill to swallow.

I know this is goingto sound so Vince Young's mom but when I was working weird hours at a grocery store while going to a community college part time, I'd come home kind of pissed about doing a good job but, not getting appreciated for all the extra work i did. She'd always keep in mind it's just a job, collect your checks andkeep your eye on the long term goal.I think Vince has not resigned himself to backup as much as doing the best you can until an opportunity arises whether that is this year or the next, when he'll likely be cut or traded.

He should be consulting with Randall Cunningham right now to see how a QB can transfom from a running QB to one that can stand in the pocket.

I don't have a problem with Vince saying he is geting his checks so he is fine.

At the end of the day it is a job.

I would expect a little more out of a guy that was the #3 pick in the draft.

Bud thanks for trying to spite Houston. It's only going to cost you a few million $

You know what? I don't feel sorry for him at all over not being some superstar athlete, but I do feel sorry for him when I consider that he is famous for his lack of intellect.

They say that anything over $50,000 (present value) a year won't make you any happier; so, imagine making $50,000 a year and getting famous for being stupid. Maybe they shouldn't make the results of those tests public. That would help a little bit.

After watching America's Game on NFLN about the '89 San Francisco 49ers, I was amazed at the drive and ambition of their back up QB. He was not content to sit behind Joe Montana, one of the top NFL QBs in history. He was not happy to learn from Montana or resigned to be his backup. He could care less what Montana had achieved, because he was driven to take that starting job and he was determined to show the coaches and fans that he could measure up against one of the best in the NFL.

What a difference in Youngs. Steve had the internal drive, ambition, and fire to never be happy unless he was taking snaps. His entire existence was devoted to that single cause. It is interesting to see the comparison after reading Vince's interview above. He lacks the will that Steve Young had, and it makes me wonder if his drive really exists these days.

I have a question about this. I too, despite being a hated enemy during his playing days, respected Youngs drive. But do you think that if a backup was this driven today they would be regarded as a boat rocker or as a malcontent? Because as I remember Joe and Steve weren't exactly on friendly terms and they didn't exactly coexist perfectly. I almost think in todays NFL Young would have been shipped off to keep the peace and to preserve Joe's ego. Just a random thought.

Anyone catch this awe inspiringly dumb post on Kuharsky's blog?

Jason from Chicago writes: Paul you are known to hate VY this should be good for you to read. I acknoledge he cant read coverages or throw intermediate but he just wins... Of course you can compare Cutler to Young, they are both quarterbacks who were taken in the first round in 2006. Both were pro-bowl quarterbacks, both started in their first year in the league. One got his coach fired the other got his coach a new contract. One is abused for quitting during a game the other is praised for refusing to talk to his coach or the owner. One dealt with his benching by going to work to get his job back. The other dealt with the attempted trade by pouting like a little girl until the owner said to hell with this, get him outta here. You want more. One we have been told got into the face of his defensive team-mate when he thought he was unnecessarily rough on a receiver in practice. The other we have been told verbally abused his receiver during a game for dropping a pass. Vince Young is a leader, Cutler isn't. That is why Cutler has never won anything since high-school and Vince has never had a losing season in his life period.

Paul Kuharsky: I don't hate Vince Young. I'm allowed to judge him, however, on his body of work independent of Jay Cutler, and I have far more first-hand information on Young.

I've said that Young, Cutler and Matt Leinart have all come across as guys who seem to feel entitled rather than guys hungry to earn it. I think it's somewhat representative of their generation.

That's great that Young is a leader and I know you and a lot of his fans are super excited about it.

But his coach and his coordinator benched him, so that leadership must have been judged by two pretty good coaches to not be sufficient enough to outweigh his abilities as a quarterback. And when they did bench him, his teammates rallied to an incredible degree around his replacement and were relieved by the change in leadership. There is no such thing as an NFL QB who won with leadership even though his arm was not great, his touch was poor, he didn't read defenses well and he couldn't respond well to adversity or hardships.

Somehow Jason from Chitown missed that Vince got his OC fired and didn't do a damn thing to "lead" or "have a winning season" last year other than ride the pine and pout.

Perhaps Jason should ask the Titans if they'd be interested in a Young for Cutler swap. Anyone actually think Tennessee would reject it?

GOD, will the "VY just wins games" go away anytime soon? They could throw the ball twice a game abnd be ok with the D they had. This year may be intresting, with Fat Al out the door.

I agree. I believe that this should be every true Texan fan's take on this.

So can we safely say that he has now lost "it?" :gun:

I was watching Mel Kiper today talking about "it" in this year's new draft prospects and I enjoyed a quiet chuckle to myself.

To me, VY is like my playing 18 holes of golf, scoring a 115 and sinking a 40 foot putt. At the end of the day, I may not know that much about football or be that good at talking about it ... but I called that shot from Day 1.

According to that America's Game documentary, they were friendly to each other off the field, but the media played up the competition and painted their relationship with a broad brush (i.e. sensationalism). And there is no doubt that it was a heated competition, simply because both were starting QB caliber players.

Steve Young just wanted to compete for the job and gave it his all at every opportunity (both in practice and in games). He never relented, he never gave up, he never sat back and acted like it's all the coach's decision.

The point is that VY should be doing the same if he had it in him. He reads in this article like he's not only o.k. being a backup, but he's content with the idea of making a lot of money doing it. I'm not feeling the "I want to play and I'm ready to play whenever the coaches decide to play me" from his words. I'm not reading the "heart of a champion" type player here.

Words that would never come out of a Steve Young type player:

“If they want me to sit on the sideline and be there to watch the game then that is OK with me, but at the same time I am getting my checks and I am fine.’’

Why would he have a mental breakdown if he was o.k with being a back-up?

Sounds to me like all this is eating him up inside and he is just trying to rationalize being demoted.

The difference between Steve Young and VY is that at at the time Steve Young wasn't dealing with the added pressure of being a top three pick and losing his job to a journeyman.

Of course they'll have different outlooks on playing the back-up role. One guy probably needed to slow down and be humbled a bit, while the other guy needed to be the squeaky wheel asking for grease just so he could get a shot.

I don't put a lot of stock into his checks statement because (IMO) it's like he's rationalizing the fact the he isn't starting and instead of having family members think he's gonna kill himself, he's instead remembered that it is a game that he's being paid for...Not starting isn't the end of his life...And hey...I am rich....

Sounds like the silver lining you'd look to in order to keep your sanity...

The problem is, VY was never a good QB. Great athlete yes, quarterback, no. In the NFL, all these guys he plays against are the best. Not the case in college and high school. In the NFL you're not going to make a living on just your talent alone. In the NFL, you've got to study film and find every advantage you can over your opponent. That, plus your talent will help you succeed. VY doesn't seem to want to make that effort. He seems to think it's still college and high school where he'll just out-talent everybody.

And I believe that attitude comes from all the hype this guy has gotten since his high school days. Always glorified, never learning to deal with adversity, never learning to deal with failure.

As the great Aerosmith classic says, "you got to lose to know how to win".

Last year folks were talking about him going mental after he lost his starting job.

Actually, he went mental before losing the starting job, and then went further off the deep end after losing it.

Why would he have a mental breakdown if he was o.k with being a back-up?

Maybe he thought he had the skills when he lost the job but now realizes that it takes a lot more work than just relying on physical ability. So he's resigned himself to the fact that he lacks the drive to put in that extra work.

Sounds to me like all this is eating him up inside and he is just trying to rationalize being demoted.

'eh, it's perception. I just read what he said, not what I think he might be saying or what he might be thinking when he's saying something else.

I'm reading his words in black and white, and they do not read like he is a person that has the 'heart of a champion' and all that jazz that was continually said about him.

The difference between Steve Young and VY is that at at the time Steve Young wasn't dealing with the added pressure of being a top three pick and losing his job to a journeyman.

I tend to agree with Speedy's take that Steve Young was destined to be a great QB because of his physical skills and mental ability.

You don't think trying to fill Joe Montana's shoes was pressure?! Give me a break, man. I'd say that is ten times the pressure of being drafted high.

And cry me a river. Vince has a national championship trophy, was GIVEN the starting job without earning it, and made the Pro Bowl in his first season.

When did VY ever have to fight to earn his position? One look at his entire football career and the answer is simply "never".

Now he's going mental after being faced with adversity? It looks like he's quit give a crap, which is quite evident by his interview.

My point is that driven individuals do not say stuff that represents complacency. That's all.

You can continue to apologize for the guy, but it doesn't sound like he needs it anymore. He's o.k. with being a backup. So don't sweat it.

I'm glad he's eating up Bud's money.

It's a win-win, for me, as a Texans fan: They have money tied up in a failure of a QB, and Bud is footing the bill.

I am not anti-IQ Kid as much as I am anti-Bud the Dud. The thing is I can't hope for one to succeed without it helping the other. I got soooo tired of listening to the VY jock jumpers that It made me not even want VY to be able to get out of bed without screwing up. I never wanted him on the team but I was happy for UT to get that chmpionship until I had to stomach the seemingly entire nation tell us how bad we screwed up. Now I am even anti-UT. VYs entire mess is on Bud. When he locked Steve McNair out he ruined VYs chances. VY had a golden opportunity to be able to sit back for a year or two behind a very good QB that he looked up too and who had a similar style to his. If Steve would have had a chance to teach and mentor Young, Young would have had a chance to truely blossem into the great QB Austin thinks he is. Darn the luck that Bud is brain dead.

I just wonder if it was worth it for Bud to draft Vince just to irritate Houston....sure he got over on one game but now he has a really expensive benchwarmer who is gonna bolt as soon as he can...I fear to Houston...some of you will beg for him.. so why draft a QB if you dont want to use him. so bud drafted a qb with 3rd pick and he gets injured....and despite the cardinal rule of not loosing a job to injury...lost it. Mental issues aside what did he do on the field to loose the job?

I think with that defense they had even Radio could have guieded them into the playoffs..so why go with a QB who can throw the ball...when you dont have any receivers...I just dont get it.

Mental issues aside what did he do on the field to loose the job?

Seriously? Try 10 TD's and 19 INT's (and 11 fumbles) over the last two seasons with a QB rating that would make HWWNBN blush. Plodding run oriented teams can afford to not have great passers, but they can't turn the ball over.

was that over two years? or just last year? I dont see why he lost it last year. if thats the case for last year..then that makes sense.

I don't have a problem with the ""I'm going to keep my mouth shut" part. What's painfully absent from his quotes is, "I'm gonna study game films, and put extra work in to sharpen my game, so I will be ready when they call my name".

Vince really only played in one meaningful game last year; the opener. He also played in the blowout against Detroit and in the last game against the Colts - after the Titans already had homefield.

Yes, basically 17 games. Ball control teams don't like that many turnovers in 17 games.

Vince's comments in this article are not very helpful for Vince. he comes off as a total prick who isn't holding himself accountable for his current situation. collins didn't take the job from Vince, Vince lost the job. Collins has just happened to keep the job once it was his.

Vince comes across as a spoiled rotten kid in this article. He says the right things but then has some petulant add-on at the end or some excuse/distraction of accountability.

I hope the guy turns it around as long its not in our division, but things aren't looking too good for him right about now. He should be throwing 24/7 and eating, sleeping, drinking football 24/7 and I just don't see it happening. Vince showed resilience galore at Texas but he has been woefully short on that in the NFL. weofully short.

But all Vince does is win games, right...? :gun:

I think the "high" of winning the championship was too much. And I said that wayyy back in his first season when it was apparent that he didn't care to address the little things that were about to cause a problem his maturation as an NFL QB.

He's a guy who can honestly look back on his college days and feel that he had accomplished everything he wanted. Because he sure doesn't care about winning at the NFL level. He stumbled upon a window of opportunity, especially by having a college coach who said "You just do whatever you need to do, we'll stay out of your way. This is your deal. Go get 'em!" I mean, what coach DOES that? That, I think, was what made Kubiak tell McNair he wanted nothing to do with Vince Young.

What he did in college was special, and it was special because he could get away with it due to the nature of college: You only have one year of seniors, guys who are a ripe old age of 20 or 21, and the players get younger and younger as you go down the roster. Vince, for all practical purposes, was a man playing the game of football with mere boys. He was at the top of the food chain, athletically AND mentally, and so he sliced and diced the kids who were only a year or two out of high school.

It also helps that he faced a USC defense that was ranked, IIRC, somewhere around 30th in the nation at the time. I mean, that was a match made in burnt-orange heaven if you ask me. The smart money to be bet on that game was all on the UT side, IMO.

So you had Bush and VY coming off some explosive moments, and then there's this guy named Mario Williams. We all see what happens when the hype machine blows a tire...ask Red Raider fans...and the problem with the time between the end of college season and the draft is that you have no way of knowing if January's stars are really all that great or if they aren't.

VY and Bush are the poster child of why you cannot say "Oh, that guy is a sure-thing." The onslaught of those hype machines should be enough for everyone involved in the game of NCAA and NFL football to say "Let's slow down for a second. I am NOT putting all my chips on the table for another Vince Young or Reggie Bush."

Those days might be over, at least for several years until all the elements of another Perfect Storm come together like it did with VY and RB. It'll be interesting to see how long the hangover from that draft class will last.
