Bradford for atleast awhile, Gaffney seems better suited for the slot and Mathis as a rookie (and from a smaller school at that) will probably need some time to adjust to the #2 role. Armstrong seems to be in the same boat as Gaffney.

AJ, CB, JG, and DA. Just my assumption. But next year I could see Mathis being the #2 guy along with either Armstrong or Gaffney as the #3. No offense but I hope Gaffney doesn't make any more simple mistakes. He may be let go like a certain #84 that we all remember from 2002.

What's wrong with moving all those guys around and not just lining them up in the same spot all the time? Maybe create some mismatches?

Bradford is outside and uses his speed in deep outs and uses his speed to spread out the defense so they have to cover more space. Gaffney is good finding open spots in zones and does a nice job with comebacks and curls. Those skills are better suited for the slot.

A 5 wr set wouldnt look too bad. The Patriots run it pretty effectively with no superstar receivers. We have AJ....I wouldnt mind seeing it once in a while...what do u guys think?

I wish they would just hand it to Armstrong and cut him loose. The circus catches he makes would wreak havok among opposing defenses and they would almost have to double him over AJ. The man catches everything in his area in practice(I know...I know....it's PRACTICE), so give him more chances in actual games. My biggest problem with the coaching staff is that they seem loathe to elevate anyone who is not a high draft pick to the starting lineup. I mean it took DD 6 games of vastly out performing his competition to get the starting nod. Not to mention Peek. I think Earl is the only example that goes against this. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Mack was doing a decent job and he got hurt didnt he is the only reason DD got a chance!

Ummmm....if you call 2.6 yds a carry "decent", then yeah!!! He was doing great!!! Seriously, though....naw, I can't be serious with that. Stacy Mack was best at what he was used for in Carolina...short yardage, goal line situations. Here's a link to his career stats. I guess I shouldn't be too hard on Mack. Walter Payton and Jim Brown would've looked like chumps behind that (very) offensive line.http://www.houstontexans.com/. Look under player stats for 2003. I just wish the coaches would put the players who perform in practice on the field for games. They are more than willing to ignore fan wishes on draft day, why not ignore them on game day and put the performers on the field, regardless of pricetag, name recognition or draft pick status??

I agree that Mack was a disappointment here. He came to us from the Jags, and it's sad to say that him getting injured was the best thing to happen to us. I don't think he was even picked up by another team last season, but he did get a try out with the Dolphins after they lost Ricky. Shows you what kind of RB he is if he couldn't get a RB spot on the Dolphins.

Bradford will be the #2 for now... Look for Mathis to get some playing time later in the year and next season.

I hope Mathis works out as receiver. BUT, IMHO, watch out on kick offs. I think we might actually break a few for TD's this year. The coaches say he has excellent open field vision and instincts. Kick off returns for TD's kick butt. Takes ALL the wind out of the other guy's sails

I say between him and PB 5 kick/punt returns for TD's this year.

I'll kiss your butt and give you an hour to draw a crowd!!!!!!! :thumbup

OK, since we have RECEIVER DEPTH, why don't we do some 5 wide-out shotgun ?

CARR is going to face pressure whether we have everyone back blocking or not.........so why not give him the best targets possible ?

think about it.........wait..........even better, LOOK AT IT

A.Johnson J.Gaffney OT OG C OG OT D.Armstrong J.Mathis C.Bradford

you've got MATHIS and BRADFORD with speed........ARMSTRONG catching everything.........GAFFNEY getting open...........JOHNSON doing all of that!

The main thing I like, there are going to be AT LEAST 3 guys drawing single coverage.

AND if Palmer got struck by lightning and actually started trying to keep the opposing defense guessing, he could line them up differently whenever he wanted......Why not bunch them ? or put them in motion ?

I love Football, and I say the more variations you throw at a defense the more chances you have for big plays.

Having those five guys on the field at the same time looks like endless possibilities to me.

Am I wrong ?

I hope I'll get to call you on that!
P.S. Notice how I did'nt mention how many fumbles :woot
awwww dude!!!!! You suck!!!!!! LMAO!!!!
I'll trade 1 or 2 fumbles for 5 TD returns. Maybe THAT will get defenses on their hee;s and keep D's playing honest!!!! :thumbup

No you're not. Ive been thinking about that alot this offseason. We should start using more 4-5 wide formations. Unless Im mistaken, Carr did great last year when we spread the field, but Palmer is blind and doesnt see that... If we did go with 5 wides, I would say put Mathis and AJ on 1 side and have Mathis run a fade, while AJ runs a 15 yard in. The safety would have to cover Mathis, and the CB wouldnt be able to cut and get to AJ in time. Even in cover 2 that play would work alot. There are so many variations you could make out of that play!

All that sounds great but we just have to see how mathis plays in real big time games and if he can catch, but im lookin forward to seeing this guy the more and more i read bout him the more i like him. hopefully he drops the rep of bad hands and starts makin defenses to be scared everytime they see number 13 and 80 on the feild.

go read the new story on the Texan's main page. Capers said that Mathis runs by all the DBs in practice and catches long balls all the time. I know its only practice, but it still shows alot of promise. Capers also said that Mathis has great hands (so far at least), but is very raw on running routes. That can be fixed b4 the start of the season. Im sure AJ will be helping him out 2. The kid shows alot of promise! Also, you should watch the video with TJ in it talking about practice. Sounds like he has a good work ethic.

yea im not worried bout his hands our route running cause thats somethin he can learn but speed u cant learn u have it or u dont so he has alot of potential and i think will be fantastic here in Houston im excited to see him on the field.

mathis ran a 4.2..
wait till Buchanon gets here and those two match up.. he ran a 4.31 or a 4.34

.....
Just don't blink :woot

I think Gaffney is going to stay as the slot..I like him in that position esp. on 3rd downs.. He lets settles into spaces that AJ and whoever clears out for him

personally i like Armstrong better than gaf in the slot so i think to make everyone happy we have a slot receiver on each side :thumbup

Would that be our 4 reciever set this year? It would be Bradford early in the year, but by November, I bet Mathis is there. If for no other reason than to get him the reps in prep for 06.

yea andd maybe even a 5 reciver set every now and then to really throw the defense off. whether u like bradford or not hes fast and havin him AJ AND mathis on the feild would just be plain scary not to mention having to figure out how to cover armstrong and Gaf. being a DB myself.....i would just walk off the feild cause thats just askin to be burnt those guys r fast and could stretch a defense.

i like the idea of a 4 wr set with DD as a roaming Hback/Halfback/WR. that would be sick. don't know if it would work though, but sounds cool.
