At what point in the draft do you consider trading UP?

Lets say a talent like Raji or Orakpo falls close to us and we didn't think there was any chance in hell of that happening. At what point would you trade up to get the impact player?

Our 15th pick is worth 1050 points. To get one of these guys i'd be willing to give up the 15 (1050) and the 77 (205) which would be worth 1255 points or roughly the 11th overall pick (1250).

I would only give up 2 picks for 1 highly rated player like a Raji or Orakpo because I dont believe that giving up 3 picks is a good value when Smithiak has proven they can find productive players in the later rounds of the draft.

However, if we gave up pick 118 (58) then we would be trading 1313 points or roughly the 10th overall pick (1300). In this crazy draft day scenario there is a very slim chance either of these guys fall to # 10 but crazier things have happened on draft day.

Personally, I wouldn't give up the extra 4th to move up the extra slot, but if one of these guys fell to 11 i'd be falling over myself if I were Smithiak to make that trade happen (1st and 3rd for Orakpo or Raji). I believe either of them solidifies our DL, particularly BJ Raji who is the closest thing to Albert Haynesworth in this draft.
 
I'd stay where I was at and pick a RB.

I don't see us picking or reaching for any players that will take time to develop. I think in the first round the Texans will look for the player that will give them the most bang for their buck from day one. Jumping up the board for D-linemen wouldn't be that smart IMHO. Especially when they usually take a while to develop and most likely wouldn't be a starter anyways.

Stay where we are and take a LB or RB that can start from day one.

I agree. I personally don't think the LBs in the draft are worth 15, except obviously Curry, but RB is interesting. There are several RBs I could see us taking.

Whoever they pick is going to be a significant contributor right away. We can't afford to take some workout warrior who ends up being a special teamer his whole rookie year. Hopefully the Texans put emphasis on game tape.
 
Sanchez holds the key to this draft. teams are split on Stafford but everyone agrees some team will select him in the Top 10 but Mark Sanchez has all of man love on fire somewhere between picks 10-15 teams will battle for position to draft him. Singletary was there yesterday @ USC pro-day & I can't imagine him passing unless offered a decent package which could bump them right up against the Texans. So I could see the Texans move up or down a little to secure their guy whoever their guy is I have absolutely no freaking idea :texflag:

That's true, I dont think Sanchez gets past San Francisco. However, if Raji or Orakpo fell to 10 i'm sure Singletary would be thinking REAL hard about whether or not Sanchez is THE GUY for his team.

Agree with most of this Polo. I don't see the point in trading up just barely a few picks. I don't see anyone that could help us that much to where we need to give up a pick to do that.

I'm fine with picking at 15, but if we go LB I don't want any part of Clay Mathews at all. If Maleuga is there I'll be so ticked if we went after freaking Mathews with a much better stud in Maleuga. I don't care if he is the Middle guy. We could work it out somehow with him and Demeco. Mathews just isn't worth that 15th pick.

Wells is the guy that I want though. He has to much potential to help this team out to pass on him. Our offense got so much better this season because of the improved running game and we need to MAKE SURE that our running game stays hot. We could spend the rest of the draft on defense after that.
 
I'd consider trading up in the second and third rounds. Once you get out of the first round you can jump 5 or 6 spots for very little.

I agree and just maybe the Cutler thing will impact the top 14 spots. For example, if Detroit got Cutler ( I know skins are front runner) for the #1 pick that might push Stafford down. Not sure what Denver will do with the #1 pick although common sense say QB. Do they go after Jeff Garcia and use the #1 for other options?

I am a Raji fan. Everything says he can stop the run, tie up 2 guys and still hurry the QB. A collapse the pocket player. I don't however give up very much to trade up. I think the call will be a trade down similar to last year. If so, Smith and kubes should be doing high 5s all weekend.
 
What they say they want on the defensive line.....and Cleveland is eyeing one of the WRs.....and they(Cleveland) aren't in the running for Cutler....I could see them moving to five for Raji.

Do I think they will do this ? No.

I think Raji is the best of the class and someone will invest in him. KC took thiers last year....Seattle will have the running back, QB, OLT and their choice of the tweeners....so if Ceveland is looking for picks...they'd be a prime target for us. I think Raji is what they where hoping Okam could be for them. I think they, the Texans will disscuss it.

Oh and no on Orakpo...I think he'd be marvelous for us.....they do not want to move Mario. I take them at their word. So I do not believe Orakpo would be in their move up plans.
 
I think the Texans will have to consider Raji and Orakpo at 10 (don't know how costly it will be though) and Everette Brown at 12 or 13.

But if the draft pans out like several mock drafts I've seen so far, like the Yahoo mock today, I'd rather the Texans trade back for an extra pick and grab Michael Johnson at #33, choices of 2 among these guys, plus their own third:

#71 Rashad Johnson, #46 Alphonso Smith, #54 DJ Moore, #53 William Moore, #67 Paul Kruger, # 36 Darius Butler (maybe too costly at 36th considering that others are available at lower spots.)

I like 'em RBs, but I think it will be better for us to take a guy later like Andre Brown, Glen Coffee, etc.

I hear ya'.
That's why I worry how costly it might be.

There's also a little bit of a difference.
We had more needs before this year (not saying we still don't have a lot of needs.)

If Peterson is on board this year, I would consider trading up for him as well.
(Many of us liked him, but the Texans had moved down to get Schaub. We didn't have anything left to trade up, and we had already lost the 08 - 2nd rounder as well.)

1st of all, would you trade the Peterson pick? I would'nt.

Orakpo is a tweener, the price to move up for a guy who may or may not fit your system is rough. I would move up for Curry or maybe Malcome Jenkins, possibly Raji. Thats it. We have one of the worst picks in this draft. We either dont need the position or have to reach. Trade down may not be an option on draft day. This sucks.
 
Does the recent news tha Raji tested positive @ combine make any difference? I sure hope so.

i'm with you on this one. if we can't move back i see us taking the #1 back over the 3rd best lb. good call.

I just don't think there is much "elite" talent at the top, and that this is a very deep draft. No difference between the talent at 5 and 15.
 
Unless you're a team in desperate need of a QB or LT I don't see any reason to trade up. The drop off at other positions really isn't that big from 5-15.

The best thing about this draft is that it is deep and there is value all over the place.
 
I would like to see us trade this years 7th and next years 7th and move into the 6th. The talent really drops of after the 6th round.
