That's a toughy. I chose SS and here's how I got there.

DE- Signing Antonio Smith helped the DE spot, him and Mario should be a good starting tandem.
DT- I like Amobi and think he's still developing. I'd like to add a DT but I think our rotation of guys is decent.
WLB- I like Adibi and think he'll continue to grow into the starting role.
MLB- Demeco is awesome, we just need to get more help around him.
SLB- This was close for me. Diles is coming off injury and that really concerns me. Adding a starting SLB would make him backup with the other LBs we have and would turn this group into the strength of our Defense IMO.
CB- This was very close for me. I like Reeves and he's playing as our best CB. Dunta never played 100% since his injury and there's a pretty good chance this is his last year. Bennett HAS to recover from his sophomore slump. Molden showed lots of potential and got injured late in the year. Faggins is next in line and he could be gone. CB right now is boom or bust for us. Adding a 1st round CB would mean this would be Dunta's last year most likely.
FS- I've always wanted a FS for this team and we just gave Wilson a decent contract. I think he performed well but not great.
SS- Barber is being touted as someone the coaches love and may want to start. I think right now he'd be a great special teamer and backup SS. Not real confident of him being the starting SS at this point but I hope I'm wrong.

SLB and DB are the two critical positions for me right now on defense.

I went with DT because a great Dline would help all the other positions. I'm comfortable with DE having Mario, but I still have doubts about Akoye.

I agree with OleMiss.

That's why I'm hoping that we can trade down to get another pick in the 2nd.

It doesn't have to be a FS, if a guy can play both positions adequately, I'm all for a football player first.

I would like to have a late first plus two second rounders; or three 2nd rounders.

I'd take two safeties and a CB

Rashad Johnson, William Moore, Delmas, Chung, among other safeties.
DJ Moore, Alphonso Smith, Sean Smith Macho Harris, among other CBs.

That will take care of the backside and transform the team immediately.
One unit that can stay together for years to come.

DT because as Creedence Clearwater revival once sang "Who'll stop the run?" if it is your LB or SS , it probably means the guy is already past the Dline.

Well, I don't know near as much as you guys, BUT, I'll play along anyway. I voted CB. I don't have much faith in Reeves, and not to confident with Dunte since he got diarrhea of the mouth. Time will tell with both. Bennett and Molden are still big ? marks IMHO Maybe a good TC will help both to learn how to keep an eye on the ball!! I still don't know what role Ferguson or Harrison will play in the secondary, but, I think our secondary as a whole, needs LOTS of help. JMO! I'm bored today and lonely, need to interact with TEXANS!!!!! :logo:

I chose DT for this same reason. I heard or read somewhere that teams were deciding that we were soft in the middle and not even bothering to pass when they could just run it up the middle on us. If they're first option is to run it up the middle, I think it must be our our first priority problem to solve.

I like Delmas in 2nd and R. Johnson in 4th.

How about Jenkins at #15 for FS/CB
Ron Brace NT in 2nd
Rashad Jennings RB 3rd
Canfield OG at 4A
Holtzclaw LB at 4B

Glad to see you posting! I see Bennett as best CB last year and should only improve this season. Dunta will be Dunta except probably about 95% rather than 80% last year. He will not be a drag on field or problem in club house. Bennett will hve his mentor (Dunta)back and should grow even more. Molden should be 100% soon and Petey Faggins may not make team.:wild:

I like Jenkins, but at 15, I'm not sure I would buy that value.
Rashad Johnson is simply not gonna last into the 4th. I even think he'll be gone before the 3rd.

If you're a GM I'll trade you my late third for him, win win :)
I don't see value in Brace in the 2nd either
I like Jennings, but I think we can find a RB later than the 3rd
Don't know about the other two.

Don't know why running back wasn't up there as a choice. We are one deep at that position and that means one hit away from Ryan Moats as are feature back. Folks we aren't going to make it with our RB depth chart..

Good point. I need to ask the mods to change the title of this thread to "Texans Greatest Defensive Team Need" or add a poll option for "Offense - specify in a post". There's not enough poll options to include all of the possible positions.

Fixed the title. You can post a second thread for offense.

I picked CB's. We got beat bad and often. Gave way too big of a cushion and I watched time and time again, as our guys rarely made a play on the ball. They would be sitting, waiting for the catch to be made, then try to tackle. Hopefully it was the scheme, but I don't have a lot of faith in our DB's at all. Unfortunately, that includes Dante. I think we, as fans, are really loyal to him.....possibly to a fault. I'll give him this year to see what he does. Hopefully he'll be at 100% and can bring something to the table next year, other than being a fan favorite and having a reputation as someone who used to be a good player and had a ton of potential, but had a really bad injury.

1. NT
2. SS
3. Pass rushing DE
4. True #1 CB
5. Insurance at OLB incase Adibi or Diles can't go
6. Young guy to take over for Wilson eventually

I think the Texans have at least attempted (only time will tell how successfully) to address the greatest weakness--the coaching staff. I know the coaches are only speaking blah, blah coach speak but two points really pointed to coaching being a giant problem (1) our consistent failure to play our DB's appropriate to the down and distance combined with comments from a vet like Wilson about teaching the DB's to recognize formations, shifts, etc. and (2) a number of statements and encounters between the DL and the coaches on the sidelines. My firm expectation is Kollar, Gibbs and Bush will get more from the existing talent.

After that I would say:

#1 SLB - I think DeMeco's interior effectiveness is being minimized by his feeling like he has to make plays sideline to sideline - puts him in a more reactionary mindset. Doesn't mean draft in the 1st necessarily, but I think a real play making SLB could help out a lot on runs and take some heat off the DE.
#2 CB - this one is tough because of the coaching comment and not knowing how much the current group can be coached up. Nonetheless, through coaching or the draft a true #1 man coverage capable CB needs to emerge.
#3 DT - hopefully coaching will result in improvement here and the addition doesn't need to be elite but I sure would dig having a young Seth Payne back in the middle of the line clogging and collapsing.

Number one for the Texans on draft day should be a SS or a FS. Then I'd go with a DT to help AO if he does not pick up his game this season but he should or at least I hope he does. Hopefully Smith will help MW some with bringing on the QB as far as the pass rush goes this would be a big plus. Like She said, our secondary has to be addressed some in this upcoming draft an extra CB wouldn't hurt. A back up to Zack D. This does not have anything to do with D but an extra RB as well.

The Texans biggest need is a pass rusher. Mario is not enough. I don't care what position he plays. Or what round he's taken. Or if he emerges from the roster. Once the Texans can bring consistent heat on the QB, everything will get easier and everyone will look better. Especially, the coaches.

In Steve Wyche's mock on nfl.com he has us taking Malcolm Jenkins CB of Ohio State, and using him as a Free Safety.

What are the thoughts on this as a plan?? It could be a nice option if the coaches like him because he can also be insurance in case Dunta doesn't get back to his old self.

I think Jenkins would be a starting CB for us and we'd leave Wilson at FS, personally. I think Jenkins will be gone by the time we pick but Vontae Davis might be available. I have been fairly low on him for a while but am starting to turn course. If we could get a legit starting CB, I think it could be a pretty smart short term and long term plan.

I voted CB but the real answer isn't listed: "Killer Instinct"

I want to see "Read & React" replaced by "DISRUPT & DESTROY"

SS, the only position that hasn't been addressed and the players haven't shown anything from. SLB very close 2nd. Wilson is the FS this year.

Obsiwan is all over this one! +1 gotta spread it out!

I like Diles but he doesn't have sideline to sideline speed, plus getting him replaced as a starter means we'd have great depth with Thompson, Bentley and Coley.

100% agree.

Secondary in general is our weakest point. We are need some OLB especially for our run def. I am sure our def next year (and off for that matter) will be the best this franchise has ever seen. Our DL is becoming one of the best in the NFL especially with the addition of Smith. I still want that Run stopping DT though. Im sure our draft will be pretty much "def" heavy, which I am happy about. We should be very young and hungry next season and if healthy a contender.

“Me and (Kollar) spoke about playing the three-technique position and being on the same page,” Okoye said. “Just me doing more of what I did in college (at Louisville) as far as being aggressive and trying to get in the backfield and be disruptive.

“Instead of waiting to see, reading the shoulders to see what (the blocker is) doing, I’m trying to blow through his shoulders this time.”

I think that makes it just about unanimous that the DL didn't like the old coaching scheme.

When I read the paper this morning, I thought "this is closest anyone has come talking about previous coach." I want to see Okoye "explode through the shoulders" and go after QB.

If one of the hallmarks of our new and improved D is to have a gap penetrating style of D line play, then IMHO there are going to be consequences to this and it is going to put more pressure on our linebackers and secondary.

I think we do have the DL personnel to focus on getting upfield, but I think that this is going to leave us more susceptible to giving up short to intermediate passes in the flats (3 step drops, bootlegs) as well as screens and RB dump passes. We are going to have to place a premium on LB and secondary speed as well as having great communication on alignment and assignments.

Also, the OLB's are going to have to deal with more OL downfield (if they are getting free releases on screens and the like). This could be a problem for an undersized LB corps. If we see Mario making a lot of plays downfield in pursuit it is going to show how big of a problem this really is.

If our penetrating D linemen miss on running plays in the backfield, then we are going to put more pressure on the MLB and SS in run defense. I would really like to see us have a SS thumper that can crash down in run support and has good quickness and lateral agility (long speed is less of a concern).

These are just some of my general concerns with the quick penetrating scheme that we are hearing so much about right now. I know that that is more of a base philosophy that we will add wrinkles to and change up, but to me this really brings into focus the need to make sure we are fielding the right personnel at OLB and SS.

This really leads me to think that one our our biggest needs is to focus on improving or upgrading our OLB play.

A big fat run stuffing DT to compliment Okoye, Mario, and A. Smith. The game is won in the trenches...

If our Dline is collapsing the pocket and hurrying the QB, the RB may have to stay in and block. Our LBs will be able to focus on the short range dumps and the SS can play closer to the line as our CBs can cover the WRs in bump and run with type D. A fast FS such as Rashad Johnson or who knows, Jenkins can roam deep. We will not shut down ever play or even every series but we should be able to keep our O on the field longer and run up more points.

Gotta do what you do well...

I'm not even sure why they drafted Amobi if they knew he'd be playing in a read and react defense. That's not his game at all.

Which is why we need to upgrade the LBs. We have not had a solid core of LBs since Sharper was released. Yes Ryans is solid, but Greenwood was a joke, and at his salary....

Now Adibi has shown flashes but he has to stay on the field. Give me another 1st day LB and that will help this group. Plus with the OL worrying about the penetration of the DL the LBs should be allowed some free range.

I want to add speed to the LB corp, we have not had that ever. Matthews shuttle times shows a very quick explosive LB that can play 3 positions, so he should be our target IMO.

Because they panicked when he dropped, they never saw him getting past #8, and then he did. Willis should have been the pick. And then he could be playing out of position. Ryans Willis and Adibi would be an interesting LB group though..... Oh well spilt milk.

Coach to your players strengths. Okoye needs to be allowed to go upfield. Mario needs to be allowed to upfield, heck even TJ needs to be allowed to go upfield. What a concept. Make the RB cut before he has the ball or within a step of getting it, making plays on their side of the line, wow is that how football should be played? With aggression?

Instead, our last defensive coordinator utilized a "read then react" defense. "Read" a magazine and then "React" when the other team scores.

So who do you project he is going to beat out when they come out of summer camp ? I mean if you believe he's locked an loaded....ready by day one in September....I think it's a great pick.

Taking another slow DB and jamming into the starting line up ....bringing nothng in terms of production...defensive production...to the roster is stupid on it's face. How about that ?

i picked FS. We've never had a true one and it's been a need since day 1. I would really like to see the team draft BPA in every round this year. We only have 3-4 positions that don't need to be upgraded.

A bit miffed at the voting results. We are missing both a big run stuffing DT and a playmaking Safety right? So if you put the best safety and the best monster DT in the NFL out there for us to pick from... who do you take? DT every time in my mind.
